INTRODUCTION 1 WELCOME TO THE 2018 SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL

B

Welcome to the 6th Annual San Diego International Fringe Festival. This has been a huge passion-driven project for our amazing team of organizers. We love putting this monster together, and we’re so happy to have you join us!! KEEP IN MIND, “Fringe” is completely: • 100% UNCENSORED • 100% UNJURIED • And, 100% of the TICKET SALES GO TO ARTISTS No one on the fringe team determines what art is good, or what art is bad. In fact, a great element of the fringe is that YOU, the audience (along with the press), decide(s) what will be a success. Think of it this way, San Diego’s Fringe Festival is one of the only events of its kind in San Diego that allows ANY artist to present works in major venues. AND, artists who often wouldn’t be able to gain access to present works on their own, now have a chance to get their projects in front of audiences alongside established artists from around the world. By keeping this platform OPEN, we’re creating a birthplace for new works that could possibly be the next national or international theatrical hit. VERY EXCITING!

INTRUSION

OK, back to you. For you, the audience, there are approximately 500 performances to choose from in 11 days – all for $10 or less, I encourage you all to enjoy a Fringetastic adventure. Throw yourselves into the venues at all kinds of performances that you normally wouldn’t attend. Take risks!! You never know what you’re going to get. That’s part of the magic with Fringe. Keep open minds, and expect the unexpected along the way. SPECIAL NOTE: We couldn’t think of a more wonderful way for us to pay tribute for all that Jacquelyn Littlefield has done for San Diego theater and our community than by asking her to be the festival’s Honorary Chair for our fabulous sixth year. We have been regaled with stories, too numerous to fill this space, of her generosity to San Diego and the fostering of performing arts. With her son Geoffrey, The Fringe has been graced with the security and prestige of anchoring its festival at the historic Spreckels Theatre, radiating throughout downtown, and presenting the most inclusive, wide-ranging and affordable connection with the spirit of the arts this city has ever seen. Thank you, Jacquie. With our deepest gratitude.

Kevin Charles Patterson Director of The San Diego International Fringe Festival

June 21, 2018 San Diego International Fringe Festival 923 First Avenue San Diego, CA 92101 Dear Friends, It is my distinct pleasure to congratulate the San Diego International Fringe Festival on its sixth anniversary of “eyeball busting shows.” This award-winning festival creates a unique space for artistic expression and amplifies diverse performers who collectively contribute to this bold movement of theatre and other arts. From June 21 through July 1, 2018, we will celebrate performances across San Diego as well as the only binational Fringe Festival in the world with a weekend of shows across the border in Tijuana, Mexico.

The name Jacquelyn Littlefield and the Spreckels Building are synonymous to most San Diegans. She acquired the status of the Spreckels Building as an Historical Landmark on the National Registry and changed the theatre from cinema back to live presentations returning “Broadway to Broadway.” She protected the Building against all odds, from acquisition to demolition, in order to preserve a work of art: a traditional building mirrored in the surrounding buildings of glass. Jacquelyn Littlefield is the daughter of film industry pioneer Louis B. Metzger who was the first sales manager/general manager of Universal Pictures. Subsequently he opened the foreign office for Columbia Pictures, then returned to New York where he became the Sales Manager for Columbia Pictures. In 1932 after canvassing the U.S. for an ideal location for movie theatres, he chose San Diego on the advice of his friends the Warners, the Skouras’, etc. and acquired the lease to the then-vaudeville and motion picture house, the Spreckels Theatre. Subsequently, he added several other theatres including the Broadway, the Tower, the La Mesa, the Adams, and the Cabrillo which was located in what is now known as Horton Plaza. Jacquie Littlefield has also fostered theatre in San Diego. A three-month donation of the Box Office for the benefit of the Theatre League became three years. They were able to raise two million dollars and went on to become the living breathing spirit of theatre in San Diego today. In addition, Jacquie donated a room for the La Jolla Playhouse for telemarketing which was also used by the San Diego Repertory Theatre to raise their eight-thousand subscribers. When the Globe was destroyed by fire the season continued with just a few days lapse due to the donation of the Spreckels theatre. The Spreckels is presently the home of City Ballet and Mainly Mozart who is also housed in the Spreckels Building.

I would like to thank everyone who has dedicated their time, energy, and resources to make this event possible, especially the all-volunteer San Diego Fringe Executive Team. Again, congratulations on this spectacular occasion. Please accept my best wishes for a successful fringe frenzy! Sincerely,

On behalf of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF) welcome to the Fringe! We exist as an organization to unite, support, empower and strengthen our member festivals in order to cultivate and foster independent artistic exploration for artists and audiences across North America. We currently have 33 member Festivals spanning Canada and the USA and we are consistently growing every year. CAFF members return 100% of the ticket price back to the artists and all Festivals are selected either by lottery or on a first come/first served basis, ensuring that everyone has the same opportunity to tell their story on the stage.

TODD GLORIA Assemblymember, 78th District

We hope you enjoy this Fringe and you are inspired to visit other Fringe Festivals to explore this incredible movement with as much passion as the artists offer you and the same curiosity that brought you here. Congratulations on being an adventurer and thank you for being a supporter of the arts.

Lucy Eveleigh CAFF President

ESTACIÓN TEATRO

San Diego International Fringe Festival is excited to be partnering with its Sister City, Tijuana, Mexico – as we present the only Bi-National Fringe Festival in the World!

PASAJE RODRÍGUEZ

Zona Centro Avenida Revolución Between 3rd & 4th St. 22000 Tijuana, B.C., Mexico You can enter El Pasaje Rodríguez from Avenida Revolución or Avenida Constitución between 3rd & 4th Streets.

BUNNY 2:30 P FATU NA TOTŌ 4:00 P

17 Pasaje Rodríguez was built over the site of a

famous casino where Hollywood royalty thru the 30’s came to play. It is now a popular destination for local and international theatre, music, dance, and art, with artisan crafts, food, craft beer, and coffee shops lining the walkway. Just two blocks north of Caesar Restaurant, home of the famous Caesar Salad, it is the unique open arcade running the middle of the block where our two Bi-National performance venues are located: La Caja Fuerte and Estación Teatro.

HOW I LEARNED TO HUG 6:00 P INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY 7:30 P 9841 / RUKELI 9:00 P

• LA CAJA FUERTE

Originally named as the “Foreign Club,” after the famous prohibition hangout in Tijuana, it was home for over ten years to Songwriter’s Hall of Famer Willy Clausen, who posted at the door “Amigos del Arte. Willy’s. Come in!” After his passing it continues honoring Clausen’s legacy and contributions and is now named for the bank safe left from the casino days that was too heavy to move, La Caja Fuerte: a transformable, accessible community open space in El Pasaje, it is booked for raves, parties, poetry readings to mini-concerts, dance groups, exhibits, conferences and, THE FRINGE! – https://www.facebook.com/pg/lacajafuertetj/about

• ESTACIÓN TEATRO

Estación Teatro is an independent cultural space created by local Tijuana artists that focuses on the performing arts and cinema with a coffee shop next door that is run by the artists. It is a theatre that creates a unique full stage experience for performer and audience alike because of the intimate proximity of both in the small space: a tiny jewel that shines brightly when the lights go up, Estación Teatro has a long history of contributing to the arts and artists in Tijuana and now, the FRINGE! – https://www.facebook.com/pg/estacion.teatro.9/about

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FRINGE FESTIVALS The Fringe began in 1947 when eight groups appeared uninvited to the newly formed Edinburgh International Festival and performed their shows “on the fringe” of the main festival – in church basements, storefronts, streets and alleys. While the main festival still exists, The Edinburgh Fringe is now the largest performing arts festival in the world: more than 3,000 companies from around the world give thousands of performances during the 3 1/2 weeks of that festival. More than 200 Fringe Festivals have been established throughout the world, in major cities and rural townships, in warm summer days and snowy winter nights. They provide an opportunity to showcase works and performances in a setting unconstrained by censorship, judgment, or the status quo, and they provide platforms for international artists of all origins and disciplines to collaborate and share their art with each other and with the local community. For information on other Fringe Festivals that would love to have you visit, check out: www.worldfringe.com

ABOUT THE SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL At the San Diego International Fringe Festival, we focus on fringe artists and creating community, as we encourage the development of San Diego as a destination for innovative artistic expression. • 100% of box office goes to artists. • There is NO censorship – Artists are free to perform what they want • Most shows run 45-60 minutes • You can see multiple shows every day • Tickets are affordable: $10 to free – A Festival PASS saves you a bunch! • Outdoor performances from Buskers and Street Theatre • CLUB FRINGE (Spreckels 2nd Floor) offers a beer and a bite, with festival artists performing snippets of their shows (and you might just meet one…) • EMERGING FRINGE is our premiere regional competition for performing artists, grades 7-12, that offers students a showcase to perform their original works in a professional San Diego theater. • FAMILY FRINGE features performances and artmaking for all ages to introduce young people to the joys of live performance and visual art.
