Our Mission… if we chose to accept. (we did)
• In groups, students will produce a TV show (and a booklet) called Finger Puppet Management using course topics and themes from the course (in class and textbook)
Approach: • To use humor and drama to illustrate concepts and develop plot
Concepts The setting is a large office in downtown St. Petersburg and the surrounding area. The concepts of target in this storyline is whistle blowing and ethical decision making. A whistle blower is an employee who discloses illegal or unethical conduct on the part of others in the organization. Ethical decision making has four basic approaches including utilitarian, moral rights, universal, and justice approaches. In our story Jacob is whistle blower and Phil is a manager that breaks the code of ethics. Jacob uses the company’s code of conduct, training, and communication to effect his decisions and behavior. Although Jacob is faced with many temptations to take the money and not say anything he stands his ground and makes the moral decision to go above Phil and correct the situation.
Target Market • Our target audience is the general workforce between ages twenty-three and forty.
Character Profiles
Phil • Ambitious and extroverted, Phil is a born leader. He gives back to the community and is an excellent provider for his family, bringing home a sixfigure income. With exceptional social skills, he is good at interpersonal relations, making him a perfectly qualified manager for LBEST Advertising Inc. His employees are happy working for him and board members respect him, as he is an all around good guy, easy going, and makes the workplace less stressful. He works hard and has helped the company to grow and expand via his innovative and creative ideas. He has built employee loyalty and has kept the board members happy and wealthy. • Unfortunately, the chronic stress that comes with the job has lead Phil to go from a drink or two after work, to a few drinks in his private office during work hours. His alcohol problem has slowly lead to a decline in the organization’s productivity and profit.
Jacob
• Jacob, who is introverted and shy, is an accountant for LBEST and works under the management of Phil. He keeps to himself and generally stays at home with his cat, Lisa. His misplaced insecurities interfere with his advancement at work and his social life. He has had a crush on his friend and neighbor for years now and has not been able to act on it. • Although he keeps to himself, Jacob has outstanding morals and ethical value. He takes pride in doing what is right, even though this may be difficult at times. We’ll see Jacob struggle to choose between his relationship with Phil and doing what is right for LBEST.
Karen • Karen is extroverted and has no inhibitions when it comes to getting what she wants. She uses her sexuality to manipulate people to get what her way. She is known for exploiting people for her own gain, which we will see happen between her and Jacob later on. • Karen has been a neighbor of Jacob for a long time now and has been aware of Jacob’s feelings for her. It is only now that she is aware of his emerging situation at work, that she decides to associate with him.
