Writing Log 10 What a journey this class has been, ever since the beginning this class has given me insight into what management is really like and everything in between. In class, what was most memorable was the management mantra, especially after going through it every meeting. Practice makes perfect right? When you go through the same thing every week, the repetition has helped me remember the mantra from Henri Fayol’s functions of management to the SWOT analysis and everything in between. Without a doubt, every aspect that is learned in this class will help me in the future, no matter what career path I choose. The book in this class ‘Management 3rd Edition by Hitt, Porter, Black’ was really thorough, easy to follow and had a lot of great information. There was really great examples and real life examples, such as the different management styles of Home Depot and the different changes under different CEO’s. The book really helps connect the theories to real life examples that just make sense, which anyone can easily follow. Something really fantastic was that every chapter also had a really concise summary of what happened in that specific chapter so notes can be a breeze to write. Even though there was a total of about only ten meetings but something that will be memorable were the design challenges, what fun and excitement that consisted of! From using the pieces of spaghetti and tape and string and using teamwork to attempt to make the biggest structure to shooting videos on the fly which explained certain management theories. Never have I had such a great variety of experience in just one class! The design challenges were really wonderful and fun and they taught you great things, such as the building the tallest structure; it showed that you need a solid base to have a tall structure and that having variety is a good thing and thinking outside the box can be a success. One thing I will remember will be the design challenge where we had to use our shoes to make the tallest structure, how smelly that was! This just shows how unpredictable and crazy management can be and how you need every resource you can get your hands on! The design challenges keep the energy alive and help people follow along without getting bored, especially for someone like me this was very important as I am a hands on learner. The energy the professor possessed was unparalleled by any other teacher i've had at USFSP and really motivates everyone to be involved and keep things going. I almost forgot to mention our finger puppet management tv show, definitely the most hands on project in class. The tv show has helped my group and I learn and grow as a team and help us have a taste of what management can be like in a really fun way! The show has helped us all communicate better with one another and has shown us what are true strengths are and what we can improve on sort of like the SWOT analysis. Also, the finger puppet management tv show has helped us realize that we all have special talents, and that we are all dedicated in our own ways and if we try we put our minds to something it IS achievable. Looking back, I am really glad I was able to take this class and have such a hands on experience with everything and have met great people in the process while learning what management is really about.
