Our Mission

Bringing philanthropy to life for a stronger South Dakota.

Our Purpose

• Promoting philanthropy

• Receiving and administering charitable gifts

• Investing in a wide range of programs benefiting the people of South Dakota

Our Values

• Philanthropy as a preferred choice expressing a commitment to a better South Dakota

• Integrity, clarity and transparency in all we do

• Empowering donors to meet the needs of South Dakotans in their own unique way

• Strong local communities bonded through shared savings and investment

• Building long term relationships that focus on the strength and sustainability of South Dakota

Our History

The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) first began with former Governor George S. Mickelson's vision. He believed our state needed an organization that would promote statewide donations and provide financial assistance to nonprofits. Thanks to his vision, the SDCF was created as a public, nonprofit corporation on November 11th, 1987.

To establish the SDCF, the McKnight Foundation and the 3M Corporation issued a $5 million challenge grant to the state of South Dakota in memory of South Dakota native William L. McKnight. The state of South Dakota committed $2 million to the project. Within twelve months, the SDCF raised the additional $3 million from private donors to fulfill the entire challenge grant.

The SDCF has grown that initial $10 million endowment into over $800 million in total assets. Today, we manage more than 1,100 endowed funds, and this number continues to grow. Through the generosity of South Dakotans and solid investment returns, the people and communities of South Dakota will benefit from the work of the SDCF for generations to come.

Donors

We simplify the charitable giving process with straightforward fund establishment and charitable gift management.

Advisors

We partner with financial and legal advisors to help individuals incorporate philanthropic goals into their estate plans.

Communities

We help communities of all sizes achieve their goals through permanently endowed funds called Community Savings Accounts, which are invested with the SDCF and managed by a local advisory council.

Nonprofits

We support charitable and nonprofit organizations throughout the state by offering grant opportunities, establishing agency endowment funds, and providing related administrative support.

Dear Friends,

I am honored to share our 2021 annual report with you. Within these pages, you will find inspiring stories of committed citizens investing in rural communities, supporting youth and encouraging success in our nonprofits. In addition to these stories of generosity, I’d like to share a recognition bestowed on South Dakota Community Foundation’s President & CEO. Blended Giving Make a Gift Today. Leave a Legacy for Tomorrow. We are here to help find the blend of philanthropy that's right for you.

So many times in life we think we must choose between two alternatives, like two different cups of coffee. When making a gift to support the causes they care about, many people feel like they either have to choose between making a sizable gift today, so they can receive any up-front tax benefits and see firsthand the result of their gift, or holding off on making their intended gift until much later, when they know they won't need that particular asset or money during life. With the first option, they would receive up-front tax benefits and see their gift at work. With the second, they maintain the flexibility in the event of unanticipated needs.

Similar to finding your perfect coffee blend, there is a way to blend your personal philanthropy that is right for you.

The idea is that you make a starting gift with a current gift of cash, securities or real estate. Then you find the planned gift method, maybe a bequest, charitable trust or gift annuity, that works best for your situation.

Blended Gifts

The Ultimate Giving Experience

Each of us is unique. We've all led different lives and experienced different situations. Why then should any of us settle on the idea that our charitable giving should be the same? Just like your selection in coffee is unique to you, so should be your philanthropy. Giving to the causes you care about can be as special and unique as you. With this kind of philanthropy, you can watch your donations at work and receive current and future benefits. Visit

Investing in South Dakota’s Future

How the Giving Process Works

When you establish a fund at the SDCF, the principal of your charitable donation is invested. Each year, a percentage of your fund’s value is made available for distribution through grants to charitable causes. As investment returns accumulate, the fund will continue to impact South Dakota forever. We put the power of endowment to work for good.

Where Your Donations Go

We work with you, your family and/or your financial advisor to make giving to causes you care about a seamless process. We offer a variety of fund types to meet your charitable goals. For example, you can designate specific charitable organizations, set up a scholarship for local students, support your local Community Savings Account or make a broad impact on culture, economic development, education, or health and human services.

Who We Serve in Addition To Donors

Nonprofit Organizations

The SDCF offers grant and endowment fund partnerships to our state’s nonprofits. Agency endowment funds create a long term funding source for the nonprofit’s mission. The Foundation also offers grants to nonprofits supporting culture, economic development, education, financial literacy, health, human services and community based programs.

Communities

The SDCF offers a fund type specifically for communities called Community Savings Accounts (CSA). A CSA will help support basic needs and enhance the quality of life within a community through grant awards to local nonprofits for years to come. Today, the SDCF partners with 80 South Dakota communities and provides a sustainable funding source for charitable causes in their area.

Advisors

The SDCF partners with professional advisors to help clients accomplish their charitable goals through planned giving.

South Dakota Freedom Scholarship

Investing in our State’s Youth

On March 18, 2021, legislators, donors and student representatives gathered to witness Governor Kristi Noem sign into law legislation that created South Dakota's largest public/private need-based scholarship to be held at the South Dakota Community Foundation.

First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard gave the initial major donation, encouraging others to follow. In addition to the State’s contribution, Avera and Sanford Health joined, and donations and commitments have reached $175 million, with a goal of $200 million.

Dana Dykhouse shared on that day and many times since, “The decision for these donors to join together on this scholarship effort means this scholarship will live forever. The fund will affect South Dakota’s young people and workforce for years to come.”

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

On October 8, 2021, Governor Noem announced the five founding members of the South Dakota Freedom Scholarship Board: Dana Dykhouse, CEO of First PREMIER Bank; Miles Beacom, CEO of PREMIER Bankcard; Phyllis Heineman, former educator and legislator; Diana Vanderwoude, System Vice President of Learning and Development for Sanford Health; and Chris Houwman, CEO and president of Malloy Electric. Chaired by Dykhouse, the committee worked quickly to establish a University Advisory Council and clarify scholarship criteria, enrollment data and other details in preparation for inclusion into financial aid packages for the 2022-2023 school

The scholarship is need-based, with each institution determining the best way to use its funding allotment. The criteria are listed on this page. Thirteen South Dakota colleges and universities are eligible during the first year.

Glenna Fouberg

South Dakota’s Fairy Godmother

South Dakota, Aberdeen and the South Dakota Community Foundation lost a strong and compassionate community leader when Glenna Fouberg passed away in early 2021. With her death, the less fortunate among us lost a powerful advocate. As her husband Rod summarized, Glenna “had a place in her heart for people who got left behind.”

For the SDCF, Glenna was a founding member of the Fairy Godmother’s Fund, which assists women in need in the state. She recalled former SDCF president Bob Sutton recruiting her to help launch the Fund, a request to which Glenna responded, “Do I look like a fairy godmother?” Sutton answered, “No, but I think you can raise money for it.” And she signed on.

The Fairy Godmother’s Fund was announced at a women’s conference in Pierre in January 2009. SDCF Senior Program Officer, Ginger Niemann, remembers that the chairs in the luncheon room were decorated with wings. All the founding godmothers, including Glenna, contributed items and raffled them off. Glenna’s contribution was a basket of her knitting. The event raised $6,000, and SDCF added a $5,000 grant to launch the Fairy Godmother’s Fund with $11,000.

All the Fund’s Advisory Council members helped raise money, and Glenna was especially keen. Glenna joked that people in Aberdeen would cross the street if they saw her coming because they knew she would ask them to donate. A woman who served on many boards in Aberdeen and statewide, Glenna raised both funds and awareness at those meetings.

She was also instrumental in getting the word out in the circles who needed to know about the Fairy Godmother’s Fund. As a former educator, she came across people in all walks of life, including those in need of a hand up. As Rod put it, “She had a knack for understanding what people needed if a little cash would go a long way or even encouragement.”

Glenna learned about a similar lunch in Brookings from a friend and launched it in Aberdeen about a dozen years ago. The simple idea is that people bring $20 $10 for the meal and $10 for the charitable cause the group would decide to support. A foe of bureaucracy, she insisted on no bylaws or organization, just the consensus of the group. Sometimes she promoted a cause, and often others brought an idea to the group. The monthly lunches brought in $800-$1,000 for the charity, and Rod notes that the more important benefit was the raised awareness to needs in town. Ginger recalls that Charity Lunch funds sometimes supplemented a Fairy Godmother grant to someone in Aberdeen.

That generosity was in her nature. She regularly gave away what she knitted or crocheted. Ginger says Glenna always came to the Fairy Godmother’s Fund meetings and SDCF office with gifts of her handiwork and treats for the holiday for the council members and staff. Rod adds that she gave away hundreds of jars of homemade relish wrapped in one of her knitted dish cloths.

While Rod and Glenna led many major fundraising efforts in Aberdeen, he says it came naturally for her. She deeply believed in the causes, which made it easy for her to explain and support—and solicit. That carried over into the Charity Lunches she established in Aberdeen.

As noted, the Fairy Godmother’s Fund is just one of the many ways Glenna supported her community and those in need. Her years as an educator exposed her to a variety of situations in which the young especially had needs going unmet. She experienced this even more after she assumed leadership of the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) at Central High School in Aberdeen, which was a way of not giving up on students who struggled. She was very proud of the ALC. Rod says, “One of her greatest joys as a teacher was seeing her students succeed, and she would brag about them.” They returned the love. One told a newspaper, “I skipped school every day last year. I haven’t skipped once this year, because of her.” Rod added, “We went to a few weddings of kids who’d gone thru ALC and wanted Glenna at the wedding.”

Her education career was recognized with awards and more responsibilities. She was named South Dakota Teacher of the Year in 1994 and was

appointed to the State Board of Education in 1998, where she served for 21 years. In addition, she helped start the annual Indian Education Summit, helped lead the South Dakota Indian Education Advisory Board, co-founded the South Dakota Teacher Summit, and supported and advocated for Teach for America in South Dakota.

She was also very involved with many charities. She volunteered for the United Way of Northeastern South Dakota and, Rod says, was at the Salvation Army every Friday morning filling snack packs. She also served on many local boards, including the Aberdeen Area YMCA, Northern State University Foundation, and the Aberdeen Area Community Foundation. She was also on the state board for Ronald McDonald House for a time, and Rod says, “When they collected aluminum can tabs at schools, she would go around to the Aberdeen schools and pick them up.” In addition to her soliciting for the Fairy Godmother’s Fund, she also helped raise millions of dollars for organizations including the YMCA, NSU, and the United Way.

Glenna was a success at all these things because, Rod said, “She fit in anyplace.” She really cared for people. The no-nonsense woman would likely bristle at the compliments. Rather, she once called her community involvement “part of the rent you pay for living on earth.” In Glenna’s case, it’s a debt more than fully paid.

The South Dakota Community Foundation awarded a $20,000 South Dakota Fund grant to The Lost&Found Association to extend targeted mental health support to South Dakota universities. Lost&Found is a 501(c)3 nonprofit social enterprise, headquartered in Sioux Falls, SD, that connects students with the tools and community for lifelong resilience.

With the grant, Lost&Found will use an evidence-based assessment tool they created called the Campus Resilience Index (CRI) to provide actionable suicide prevention recommendations to college campuses. Lost&Found plans to implement the index in partnership with counseling and student affairs staff at the following campuses in South

Dakota: South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, Dakota State University, Northern State University, Augustana University, Dakota Wesleyan University, Black Hills State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Lake Area Technical College, Western Dakota Technical College, Oglala Lakota College and Southeast Technical College.

“The Campus Resilience Index will elevate the ability of campus communities,” says Erik Muckey, Executive Director and CEO of Lost&Found. SDCF funding will go towards implementing the index and the outcomes will show campuses “what they can do to prevent suicide,” says Muckey. He adds the CRI is a tool that is also a service and will elevate campuses as they improve and change approaches for suicide prevention for years to come.

Lost&Found created the CRI using evidence-based practices for suicide prevention as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CRI is meant to inform and increase capacity for suicide prevention and recognizes both what the educational institutions are already doing

and identifies opportunities where additional investments may be made to support student mental health.

Lost&Found brings over a decade of experience in the mental health space at college campuses in South Dakota and Minnesota and currently offers two primary campusbased programs: Peer2Peer Mentorship and Lost&Found Advocates. The mentorship program trains health advocates and works with student support services to identify at-risk students who could benefit from a mentoring relationship focused on building resilience and connecting to community resources. Lost&Found currently offers this mentorship program at eight campuses in South Dakota. The Lost&Found Advocates program is an online program in South Dakota and Minnesota that trains small cohorts of post-secondary students, allowing them to become mental health advocates and allies on their respective campuses. Lost&Found’s outreach and trainings have helped normalize conversations about mental health and build resilience in young adults. The mental health burden on college students is multifaceted, and Lost&Found

works hard to provide services for this vulnerable population.

The SDCF first awarded funding to Lost&Found in 2018 through the now concluded Community Innovation Grant program. At the time, Lost&Found partnered with South Dakota State University to conduct a campus mental health survey that reached 1,154

students. The learnings from the survey have been used to identify community needs, engage stakeholders, and generate possible solutions. Since 2018, the SDCF Board of Directors has awarded $50,000 to Lost&Found, a testament to the organization’s continued good work in our state.

In a recent initiative, Lost&Found shared a project online called “30 Days 30 Stories.” For each day of the month of September 2021, Lost&Found featured a portrait photograph along with a story from someone who has found resilience amidst mental health challenges and loss. The stories shared feature powerful testimonies regarding mental health in our communities and can be found on their website: 30stories.resilienttoday.org

The Capital Area Pickleball Association was established in 2006 in response to the growing popularity of this multi-generational sport in central South Dakota. This organization was awarded a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to provide partial support for the construction of a new pickleball court in Pierre. CASA’s mission is to represent abused and neglected children who enter the court system through no fault of their own. Headquartered in Mitchell, the First Circuit CASA Program plans to use their $8,500 South Dakota Fund grant to support development of a fundraising strategy and plan to increase philanthropic support for their work. Alzheimer’s Association Expands Services in Rural South Dakota

In 2021, the South Dakota Community Foundation presented a $10,000 Community Innovation Grant (CIG) to the Alzheimer's Association South Dakota Chapter for their continued work to extend support in rural areas and Native American reservations where dementia services and resources are most limited.

“The Alzheimer’s Association believes no one and no family should navigate the journey of dementia alone,” says Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “We're glad to partner with them to provide services to rural South Dakota.”

The Alzheimer's Association received CIG awards in 2018 and 2016. With this prior funding, they first completed a needs assessment to determine what programs were working and where there were gaps in South Dakota. The Association reported that many respondents were people who'd already lost a loved one to Alzheimer's and/or dementia and felt compelled to take part to make the road easier for others navigating this disease. The Alzheimer's Association then used the information gathered in the needs assessment to create and present a plan to lawmakers to help get funding to address gaps.

More than 18,000 South Dakotans live with Alzheimer's, a number the Alzheimer's Association notes is greater than the population of Mitchell. Individuals and caretakers living in rural areas, without the support services centered in urban areas, are in need of greater care, support, education and information needed when facing some form of dementia. The need for greater awareness extends to family caretakers and long-term care community staff in rural areas. To assist in solving this disparity in resources and services in rural South Dakota, the Alzheimer's Association is collaborating with the South Dakota Department of Human Services, the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, AARP and other like-minded organizations throughout the state.

The work of the Alzheimer's Association fit the spirit of the CIG program in identifying the need and working to better understand problems prior

to testing and implementing solutions. The SDCF is proud to support this important work in South Dakota.

Kathi Herreid, State Program Director for the South Dakota Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, presents educational programs and resources in rural South Dakota. The Alzheimer’s Association provides education, support, and connections between families who have loved ones with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association offers educational materials to help broaden awareness and understanding of dementia.

A Longstanding Partnership

towards reducing the incidence of suicide in South Dakota using established research-based strategies. In 2017, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra’s Lakota Music Project proposed Music Composition Academies in Native American communities. In 2021, the Missouri Sedimentation Action Coalition received funding for Phase 2 of their sediment management plan.

“All of the Community Innovation Grant recipients addressed a myriad of issues over the last ten years,” said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer.

“The Community Innovation grant program allowed nonprofits across South Dakota to think differently about the needs in their communities.”

In 2013, the Bush Foundation began partnering with the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) to support nonprofits that are leading the way in community innovation. These Community Innovation Grants (CIG) helped nonprofits address a need in a community by increasing collective understanding of the issue, generating ideas, and implementing solutions. These steps, which may be repeated, eventually lead to a breakthrough in addressing a community need that is more effective, equitable, or sustainable than existing approaches. The SDCF was proud to partner with the Bush Foundation to serve as the intermediary for this funding for the state of South Dakota for 10 years.

“Our Community Innovation Grant partnership with the Bush Foundation allowed us to invest in creative and collaborative problem solving across our state,” said Stephanie Judson, SDCF President & CEO. “We celebrate the breakthrough solutions and the ongoing efforts underway as a result of this partnership. We appreciate the Bush Foundation’s trust and confidence in our ability to provide the nexus for continued investments in South Dakota.”

The SDCF received and reviewed 759 applications for the CIG program since that first round in 2014. The SDCF Board of Directors worked hard to review and vote on applications, ultimately awarding 257 community innovation grants totaling over $2,625,000. In 2020, $400,000 in CIG funds was reprioritized to focus only on coronavirus efforts, bringing the grand total of grantmaking through this partnership to $3,025,000. Programs awarded funding have focused on issues reflecting the diversity of our state. From housing to workforce development to more sensitive issues addressing sexual assault, human trafficking, and suicide prevention.

In 2014, the Helpline Center focused on a statewide workgroup collaborative to work

The CIG program expanded over time. The initial investment from the Bush Foundation grew from $225,000 a year to $400,000 a year in 2015. When the CIG program started, the maximum grant awarded was $10,000. In 2021, that amount grew to $20,000.

The SDCF awarded the final rounds of CIG awards in 2021 and will continue to support those nonprofits through 2022. Although the CIG program has concluded, the spirit of the program will continue. The SDCF is excited to again partner with the Bush Foundation on a new community-based grant program in 2022. This new grant program will allow the SDCF to award $1.2 million a year in grants to nonprofits in SD for the next six years. More information about the new grant program will be available on the SDCF website.

Community Savings Accounts A Lasting Community Impact

The SDCF has partnered with communities across South Dakota to form Community Savings Accounts (CSA). A CSA provides current, past, and future residents with the opportunity to give back to the town they call home.

With the SDCF’s careful investment, a community’s CSA will continue to grow and support annual awards and grants in perpetuity, ensuring the town continues to thrive for years to come. CSAs are under the control of a local advisory council. These leaders direct fundraising efforts and distribution of available funds. Under local control, the money raised in the community stays in the community.

Hill City Area Community Foundation The Heart of the Hills

Hill City is adventure-filled for those coming to see Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse or to hike and climb the granite peaks. Folks fall in love with the peace, beauty, and slower pace of life and often choose to call Hill City home.

South Dakota Community Foundation’s Community Savings Account program is a tremendous way to support your hometown. For me, the timing was perfect to make this happen in Hill City. It is such a wonderful community, and our family received support from individuals and organizations there over several years. When the time comes to give back, it should be to those who have been there for you along the way. The Hill City Area Community Foundation will benefit many individuals and organizations in the future and that is a tremendous legacy. We are honored to be a small part of that.” The endowed fund will make a difference in the lives of the residents for years to come.

they returned to the area and did just that. They now own and operate an outdoor specialty company.

The latest adventure for those that have chosen Hill City as their home is the establishment of the Hill City Area Community Foundation (HCACF). To launch the foundation, the community responded to fundraising challenges from former resident Bob Sutton and current resident DeMaris Nesheim, both board members of the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF).

The goal was to create an endowment that would fund initiatives in Hill City for years to come. Inspired by DeMaris and Bob's challenges, HCACF established a Community Savings Account with SDCF, making the HCACF eligible for SDCF matching funds to build their endowment. Together, Bob and DeMaris matched the first $50,000 in donations, and when the fund reached $200,000, the SDCF contributed $50,000 to the permanent endowment.

It took just two months to raise the money, and the Hill City Area Community Foundation was launched with a permanent endowment of more than $270,000. Of the effort, Bob says, “The

“Residents in the area are very excited about the future good this fund will provide. We now have a mechanism in place to fund existing and new projects in our community.”

The first person to sign on to the concept and challenge was Pat Wiederhold, who was Sutton’s best friend while growing up in Hill City. Raising money for the community was nothing new to Pat, who takes the role of fundraiser seriously. Several years ago, he was a member of a three-person committee tasked with raising $1 million for the high school track upgrades. In addition, he raised funds for a scholarship fund that would provide resources for Hill City High School students pursuing their education, which was his first experience in working with the SDCF.

The Hill City Area Community Foundation project was an important one to Pat. He was raised in the area and moved away to make a living in a larger community in a different state. He and his wife Lisa wanted to raise their family in Hill City, so

Pat’s passion for the community is infectious. He participates in most activities in the area and believes in giving back to those that have given much to him and his family over the years. After accepting the challenges, Pat enlisted the help of the Chamber of Commerce and shared his experience with the SDCF with anyone who would listen. He also knew it would be important to find a group of community volunteers to promote the HCACF and be part of the first advisory council. While his desire was to lead the fundraising efforts of the project, he knew he needed to find a good group of folks to take on the role of the first Advisory Council and recruited the help of the town dentist, Dr. Melissa Rupert, who stepped up to accept the role of chair. The Advisory Council members are a great combination of long-time and part-time Hill City residents, all passionate about the community they call home: Bob Lowrey, Nicole Knuppe, Danielle Lind, Stacia Peters, Dave Guerre, Lisa Wiederhold, Lori Enders, and John Rozell. Other residents in the area have stepped up to provide their expertise in event planning, website design, and marketing support.

“We have a very generous community that wants to make Hill City a better place,” Pat says. “Residents in the area are very excited about the future good this fund will provide. We now have a mechanism in place to fund existing and new projects in our community, the place we call home.”

Both are active members of the Hill City community. New Underwood Area Community Foundation Big Hearts with Small Town Charm

It is often said that small town charm comes from its residents, and there’s an understanding that strong and unique communities are built from strong relationships. New Underwood, SD, is no exception. As the community prepares and plans for the growth they may experience as a result of a new strategic mission at nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base, the residents of the area have a new source of support for projects they may undertake.

The New Underwood Area Community Foundation was established and launched in November 2021 with a town hall style meeting to provide the initial information. About 30 community members showed up on a cold Sunday evening to learn about the Community Savings Account concept and what a perpetual endowment fund could mean for their hometown.

To build fundraising momentum, the leaders in the community accepted a challenge offered by the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) to raise $200,000 and receive a $50,000 grant. In addition to the challenge from SDCF, West River Electric Cooperative stepped up to offer a match of $50,000. Dick Johnson, who participated in the meeting, stated, “A part of our mission statement says, ‘community oriented.’ Because the New Underwood community

has been a big part of West River Electric Coop’s past, the board felt it was imperative we be a part of their future as well. The New Underwood CSA will help the community and area meet their future needs to better the life of their citizens and boost the economic engine of the entire area.”

“This area is poised to grow and change, and the New Underwood Area Community Foundation will help meet the needs of a growing and changing community and area while taking care of those most precious to us, our kids and our elders.”

Brett Hanson, Vice President of New Underwood First Interstate Bank moved to the area from Laramie, WY, over 30 years ago. “Work brought me to the community,” Brett says, “and the great people have kept me here!”

Brett and his co-worker Laurel Venhuizen knew they couldn’t ask others to give if they hadn’t done the same. It was important for them to lead by example with their own donations to show their dedication to their community. They wanted ALL residents to feel they could be part of the fundraising, encouraging all sizes of donations, none being too small. They created a story

of care for the community they call home. This story invited others to give and create a legacy for the New Underwood area.

Both Brett and Laurel know that New Underwood is filled with people who care about their neighbors. They both say the best thing about the community and area are the giving and inclusive hearts of the residents.

“It doesn’t matter if you live in city limits or 20 miles away, and it doesn’t matter if you’ve lived here one year or a hundred years. You can be part of this community,” says Laurel.

The New Underwood Area Community Foundation is an excellent way to gain support and engagement from residents of all ages and trades. The Fund will be overseen by a local advisory council charged with educating their neighbors about hometown philanthropy and grant making based on priorities in the region.

Laurel believes it was very easy to get behind the idea of a community savings account. “This fund will provide the perfect vehicle to allow the generous people of our community to support worthwhile causes,” she said. “This area is poised to grow and change, and the New Underwood Area Community Foundation will help meet the needs of a growing and changing community and area while taking care of those most precious to us, our kids and our elders.”

Communities
Many residents attended the town hall style meeting late fall 2021 to learn about the SDCF Community Savings Account concept and the many benefits for New Underwood and surrounding area. Laurel Venhuizen and Brett Hanson, both First Interstate Bank employees in New Underwood, led the fundraising and organizational efforts to establish the New Underwood Area Community Foundation.

This year, the community of Faulkton received the 2021 South Dakota Association of Fundraising Professionals Outstanding Philanthropic Community Award. Faulkton is a friendly town of 736 people, situated between the James and Missouri rivers. Within this small South Dakota town live many community-minded residents.

“Our committed Faulkton Area Foundation (FAF) advisory council is definitely what has made a lot of what we have done a success,” said Lisa Mueller, FAF advisory council member.

The FAF was created in 2014 to provide a philanthropic vehicle for Faulkton area nonprofit organizations and donors. The FAF is one of 80 Community Savings Accounts in partnership with the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). In partnership with the SDCF, the FAF can accept and administer charitable gifts, give grants to local nonprofit groups and organizations, and give scholarships to hopeful young people from their region. Their volunteer advisory council works to ensure funds are going to charitable groups that need it most.

Faulkton Area Foundation Receives Outstanding Philanthropic Community of the Year Award Believing in Possible!

Despite the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the FAF Advisory Council continued forward with a matching challenge presented by the SDCF in 2015. The FAF was tasked with raising $200,000 for a match of $50,000 within five years. Dollars were to be endowed and create a long-term funding source for charitable causes in their community. When the pandemic hit, council members knew they had to shift gears to meet their goal.

The community rallied around reaching the FAF’s matching goal and committed time, talent, and treasure toward the effort. In addition to sharing their goal with many residents, the FAF started a “Chase the Ace” fundraiser, hosting four rounds. In one and a half years, FAF was able to raise over $980,000.

“Not including matching funds, we have officially endowed $1.1 million through Chase the Ace, meals, and other generous donations, which will provide for this community with grants forever,” said Dwight Hossle, FAF Treasurer. “We can’t forget to mention and thank all of the

outside volunteer time, help, and efforts that were put into this, especially towards the end of our fundraising effort.”

After greatly exceeding their SDCF matching challenge in July 2020, the FAF was excited to focus on granting dollars back to nonprofits in need. The FAF advisory council has provided two rounds of grants totaling $19,900.

Grant recipients include the Faulk County Historical Society (Painting the Pickler Mansion), United Methodist Church (Brown Bag Food), Faulkton Elementary Student Council (Outdoor Learning Center), Faulkton Area Out of School Program (Technology Advancement), 2021 graduating senior Peyton Melius (Scholarship), Orient Community Club, City of Cresbard, Faulkton Ambulance Crew, and the Faulkton School District.

Faulkton is blessed with many individuals who are willing to step forward and make things happen out of the goodness of their heart. Through recent successes, the Faulkton community exemplifies a commitment to giving back for the greater good.
