HARDROCKER FOOTBALL CAMPUS PROFILE The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, founded in 1885, has been a national leader in preparing worldclass engineers and scientists. Our graduates design, construct, and operate modern technology to meet complex challenges such as global warming, health care delivery, energy resource development, mineral extraction and processing, environment quality, futuristic transportation, and national defense. Our alumni are held in the highest regard by their fellow leaders in industry, consulting, government, health and education. Tech had diversified to meet the needs of the engineering and science throughout the world. South Dakota Tech's intellectual environment was shaped a century ago by the ingenuity and rugged individualism of pioneers in science and technology. Tech's present day pioneers provide inspiration and remain on the fields of engineering and the sciences. ACCREDITATION The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the recognized accrediting agency for the north central states. In addition, the curriculum Chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), which is the recognized accrediting agency for engineering which is a new program. The program in Computer Science is accredited by the Computer Science Commission (CSAC) of the Computer Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB), a special accreditation body recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation (COPA) and the U.S> Department of Education. ACADEMIC ORGANIZATION Academic organization of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology centers around four colleges an thirteen departments. Colleges are organized to promote interdisciplinary interaction between the sciences and engineering and to provide leadership for strong undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Faculty of the colleges work closely together to support and develop: * quality undergraduate educational opportunities; * focused quality graduate education; research and other scholarly activities in support of educational opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels; * service programs for the people of the state of South Dakota, the region and the nation.

HARDROCKER FOOTBALL DR. CHARLES RUCH PRESIDENT OF SDSM&T
Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch's professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Tech, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly eletter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Tech, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren.
HARDROCKER FOOTBALL HARDROCKER FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
DARREN M. SOUCY Darren Soucy begins his fifth season in 2004 at the helm of the Hardrockers Football Team. Before coming to South Dakota Tech, Soucy served as offensive coordinator at Mayville State (ND) for three seasons and was the tight ends and receivers coach at Humboldt State University (CA) and Northern State University (SD). Coach Soucy looks forward most of all to great leadership from a group of eleven seniors, his biggest class of seniors yet. "These guys have put in a tremendous amount of time and effort to improve this football program. They are doing everything they can to make the 2004 year a season to remember" Soucy was a tight end on the Boston University Terrier football team where he played under current Houston Texans offensive coordinator Chris Palmer. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1993 from Boston University and earned a Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology at Humboldt State in 1997. Together with his wife Alicia, they have three children (Coty 19, Jamie 10 and Brandon 7). The couple is expecting their fourth child in late November.
ASSISTANT HEAD COACH/DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
RICHARD D. SWEENEY Coach Sweeney is entering his second campaign as the Hardrockers' Defensive Coordinator. His previous collegiate stops include Western Washington University (1987 & 2001), St. Mary of the Plains College ('88 to '91), Texas A&M Kingsville ('92), Western State College ('93 to '00), and Southwest Texas State University ('02). Sweeney was a defensive back at the University of Santa Clara where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English . His Masters Degree in Secondary Education is from Western Washington University. Richard and his wife Karen are looking forward to a long and prosperous stay with South Dakota Tech Football.

DON HEDRICK
Coach Hedrick begins his second season with the Hardrockers football program. Don is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD where he played offensive line. He is a native of Minnesota and also serves as an officer with the Rapid City Police Department.

TYLER FARELLA
Coach Farella makes the transition from player to coach this year after having captained the 2003 football team. Tyler was an All Conference selection as a senior and made the Hardrockers a better football team with his leadership abilities. Tyler is a native of Newcastle, WY, and majors in Civil Engineering.

JOHN LORANGER Coach Loranger spent the 2003 season coaching the receivers and tight ends for the Hardrockers Football program. Prior to that he captained the 2002 football team and also showed great leadership abilities. John was moved over to the defense by request and has found a new home on the dark side of the ball. John is a native of Arvada, CO and graduated from SDSM&T with a Civil Engineering degree. He is now pursuing a masters degree here at Tech.

Coach Stevens is entering his first year with the Hardrockers football program. Travis is originally from Oklahoma and played defensive line at Tabor College (KS) as well as having coached the defensive line their after his playing career finished.

Coach Larson is new to the Tech Football staff and hails from Rapid City, SD. He has spent many years coaching at the youth level and now joins the ranks of a college program. Coach Larson will assist Coach Soucy and Coach Hedrick with the offensive line and other duties.

David enters his fourth year with the Hardrockers Football program. He is responsible for all of the football programs equipment and is supervised by Dennis Greer the Head Athletic Trainer and Equipment Manager for SDSM&T's athletic programs. David is from Phillip, SD.
Brandon is a student here at SDSM&T and begins his first year with the program. His duties are to include video breakdown, editing and scouting that allow the coaching staff and team to prepare for our upcoming opponents. Brandon is a native of Pine Ridge, SD. 4
Tyler is also new to the program here at Tech and will assist Brandon One Feather with the video responsibilities for the football program. Tyler is from Chugiak, AK.
