HARDROCKER BASKETBALL
HARDROCKERS READY FOR CHALLENGE OF 08-09 SEASON By Brad Blume Sports Information Director, South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY — The South Dakota School of Mines men’s basketball program took its lumps last year as one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams in the Dakota Athletic Conference. As the 2008-09 season unfolds, the Hardrockers have added experience to the roster along with a few new weapons to make the year a competitive and positive one. “Last season we were a very young team. We grew quite a bit physically and mentally,” said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry. “We lost 10 games by four or less points.” The one big thing that the ‘Rockers retained from last year was the mentality to never give up and the philosophy of trying to improve everyday whether it be on game day or during practice. “The experience from last year will hopefully help us win those close games that we were unable to win last year,” Henry said. And with the experience, the younger players on the SD Mines squad also have gained some confidence as well as a comfort which enables them to compete in one of the toughest conferences in the NAIA. “They have been through a conference season in one of the top conferences around and got through it. They understand what it’s going to take,” Henry said. Henry added that a lot of work in the offseason will also play a factor in how the Hardrockers perform this season. The coach said that a lot of his players committed themselves over the summer and look poised to have a stellar season. The 2008-09 Hardrockers have three seniors to draw experience and leadership from. Brandon Smith (6-foot-8-inch senior from Amenia, N.D.) and Donny DeGooyer (6-6 from Great Falls, Mont) have been in Henry’s system the longest as both are fifth-year seniors, both are forwards and both have tons of minutes under their belts. “They are fifth-year seniors and they really understand our system,” Henry said. “They understand what our expectations are and their leadership has been very good to start the year — and that’s what we needed.” Kyle Kurth (a 5-11 guard from Pierre, S.D.) is the other senior. He joined the team last year after concluding his final season as a SDM football player. Henry said he will be playing a lot of time at the No. 2 guard position. “He only played half a year last season for us, but he’s 22 years old, played four years of football and just has that maturity that we didn’t have last year,” the coach said. “He is playing as well as anybody right now and I am excited about what he brings.” The ‘Rockers have a group of juniors, both old and new, that will be looked at to contribute quite a bit. Robbie Fedor (a 6-1 guard from Monticello, Minn.) is a veteran returning player that has been a starter since he joined the Hardrockers and is a legitimate threat on the perimeter. He is joined by newcomers Kyle Turpin and Carl Johnson. Turpin (6-7 forward from Post Falls, Ida.) is a transfer from Spokane Community College in Washington. He shows a lot of promise under the basket and also has good midrange touch. Carl Johnson is the other transfer, coming from Montana State Billings. Johnson is a native of Rapid City, and standing 6-10 he is sure to see a lot of playing time, causing a lot of damage in the paint. Both transfers will be impact players for SD Mines, but with any
addition, it may take some time to get them up to speed. “They are basically like freshman coming in right now,” Henry said of his new players. “They are just starting to figure out what our expectations are and what we do as a program. It takes time. They are two guys that will have major minutes for us and basically starting out from square one.” The sophomore class is the biggest with five second-year players. Brent Cass (a 6-5 forward from Hereford, Colo.), AJ Trennepohl (a 6-3 guard from Lubbock, Texas), Scott May (a 6-3 guard from Aurora, Colo.), Kaleb Rehmer (a 6-4 forward from Gillette, Wyo.) and Jordan Schmitz (a 6-5 post from Williston, N.D.) round out the list of sophomore returners. Cass saw a lot of minutes last year and was considered to have that “killer instinct” that coach Henry likes to see in his players. “He battles his tail off,” the coach said. “He is a little undersized but outworks everyone he plays against whether it’s in a game or in practice.” Trennepohl earned DAC all conference third-team honors last season and is becoming renowned as quite a deadly shot from behind the arc. He started the last 10 games of the season in 200708. “He’s one of the premier shooters in the conference and had some very good games for us last year,” Henry said. “He needs to continue to have a good sophomore year and pick up where he left off last year.” Hardrocker Basketball 3
HARDROCKER BASKETBALL May was thrown into the point guard roll last year where he was able to adapt and settle into the new position. In the off-season he was able to compete against some top talent and learned from it. “He guards the ball really well and makes better decisions at the point guard spot. He started as a true freshman last year and got a ton of experience,” Henry said. Rehmer is another player with a great attitude and a hard-work ethic — so much so that he worked his way into a starting spot in a couple of contest a year ago. This season Henry hopes he can be a more consistent player at both ends of the floor. “He’s another kid that works his tail off and outworks the guy that is guarding him” Henry said. Schmitz stepped in a number of times last season and provided quality minutes, including going head-to-head with the DAC’s and the NAIA’s premier post player (Kyle Iverson of Jamestown College) and came away with some pretty impressive statistics. Henry expects him to continue to improve and provide much needed depth for his big guys. The Hardrockers brought in some quality freshmen too. In fact, SDM signed one of the most highly sought-after and multi-talented athletes in the area, if not the state, in Nate Jacobson (5-11 guard from Rapid City). “He’s our top recruit coming in and a top player in the area and a kid from Rapid City - we are excited to see what he can do,” Henry said. “He’s a true point guard which we haven’t had for the last couple years. It’s nice to have a guy that understands the mentality that a point guard needs.” Henry added that he is a big asset to the squad coming from a great system at St. Thomas More (High School in Rapid City). He is a fierce competitor as well as a proven winner. But even with an impressive resume, Jacobson is still dealing with the transition of playing at a higher level — but still has a lot going for him right now. “He’s got a ways to go. It’s a jump no matter what level you are talking about — like junior varsity to varsity or from high school to college — it will take him some time.” The other freshmen include Tommy Smith (a 6-2 guard from Fort Worth, Texas), Tanner Friesen (a 6-5 guard from Bismarck, N.D.), Jaryd Francis (a 6-6 forward from Vail, Colo.) and Cameron Cale (a 6-3 guard from Gillette, Wyo.). Smith is an athletic kid that gets to the basket really well. He will be fighting for some quality minutes. Friesen had a promising year ahead of him, but because of an injury, will not be able to play this season. Francis is a big physical player with a lot of potential and will be a real asset to the Hardrockers once his skill level increases and Cale is another athlete that comes from a great high school program who will battle and provide depth to the ‘Rocker team. SD Mines isn’t the only team that has beefed up its roster as the conference seems to be stacked up and down the line. “Overall it’s going to be as good as this conference has been top to bottom since the DAC started,” Henry said. “There are probably six teams that could make a run at the conference championship.” Minot State was picked in the pre-season poll to finish atop the DAC. The Beavers have their main players all back — but will be without their top two for the first part of the season. Valley City State and Black Hills State are also looking strong retaining all their players from a year ago, while Dickinson State is similar to the Hardrockers adding a number of quality players to their rosters. Henry hopes the Hardrockers can measure up to whatever the conference throws at his team this year. 4 Hardrocker Basketball
“Our goal is to be in the top half of the DAC and get a first-round playoff game,” the coach said. “There are no ifs ands or buts about it. I would like to say we are able to compete in the conference, but this conference is pretty darn good.” With the boost to the roster, the Hardrockers will be able to try a variety of things this season. Henry is hoping to have an up tempo type of team from time to time but really wants to create a lot of damage in the paint with his taller players. “Our post game is as good as it has been in quite a few years. We will be playing more two-post schemes,” Henry added. “We have four guys that we think can do good things around the basket and in that post area.” The Hardrockers were in the bottom of the conference last year in the rebounding category, but plan to rectify that this time out. “We are so far ahead of where we were last year,” the coach added. Defensively, Henry plans to give opposing teams fits with constant pressure and feels he has the lineup to do just that. “We are going to try to put more pressure on the ball,” Henry said. “We tried to do that the last couple of years but I think we are athletic enough to try some things and we are more physical than in past years.” The Hardrockers have a pretty busy non-conference schedule mainly playing Frontier and Great Plains Conference opponents before getting to their conference games starting in early December. “We are looking forward to getting the season underway,” Henry said. “I think it will be a challenging and exciting year for the Hardrockers.”

WELSH
Hugh Welsh has been the Athletics Director at the South Dakota School of Mines for 14 years. He also spent 19 as the head coach for SD School Mine men’s basketball program (1986-2005) and compiled a 268-273 won-loss record (.495 winning percentage). Hugh Welsh joined SD School of Mines after a very successful eight-year coaching stint at Devils Lake Region Community College in North Dakota. His teams won 194 games in eight seasons. The son of two Ph.D. recipients, Welsh appreciated strenuous academics, and wanted to coach at a university with high standards. His dedication to high academics grew, and he came to revel in trying to overcome SDM’s perennial underdog status. That’s not easy when you attempt only to recruit athletes who can succeed academically at Mines and when you battle the athletes’ competing interests. Welsh took team to A NAIA National tournament in 1997 and has two conference championship titles to his credit. Welsh, replaced Jim Kampen in 1986 as Hardrocker men’s basketball coach and took over for Erv Mont as Athletic Director in January of 1995. He is the second longest tenured coach in the men’s basketball program behind Bob Hunt who coached the Hardrockers for 21 years. He has more wins than any men’s coach in school history. He was named the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year on two occasions. His career coaching record is 545 wins and 380 losses. 12 Hardrocker Basketball
