to the King Center and Goodell Gymnasium, home of the Hardrockers. The facilities recently had a facelift as the women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s football teams all got upgrades to the locker room and filming areas. The football team is totally housed at O’Harra Stadium, while the other sports recently had their current facilities modified. The locker rooms are all state of the art to go along with an excellent gym that seats approximately 3,000, a top of the line fitness center, an indoor pool and a brand new top-of the line gym floor for use as well.

LADY HARDROCKER BASKETBALL 2008-2009 SEASON OUTLOOK

By Brad Blume Sports Information Director, South Dakota School of Mines The South Dakota School of Mines women’s basketball team was well on its way to a strong finish during the 200708 season. They were nationally ranked, had a 16-3 record and were poised to capture a Dakota Athletic Conference crown and then head on to the national tournament when the unthinkable happened. SDM lost not one, but two star players to leg injuries. “Last year was a heartbreaking year. It’s probably the most heartbreaking (season) that I have had,” said Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. “We were set to accomplish our goals — win the conference and we even had sights set on the national tournament. Things were going very well then we hit one major bump (senior Amber Deweerd is lost to injury). We overcame that and then we hit a second bump (senior Melanie Vedvei lost to injury) — it just broke our hearts.” With nine games remaining on their schedule (all conference contests), the Lady ‘Rockers posted a 2-8 mark. They managed to finish above .500 with an 18-11 overall record, but dropped from the top of the conference to fifth in the standings. A tough fought first-round loss on the road ended their season. As the 2008-09 season gets underway the Hardrockers lose three seniors from the team that will leave some pretty big shoes to fill. Vedvei was a two-time NAIA first team selection and was an NAIA honorable mention her sophomore year. She was a two-time conference player of the year and four-time DAC first team honoree. She has numerous school records including the second all time leading scorer in school history. Vedvei along with Deweerd and Jennie Malone (also a DAC all conference selection multiple honoree) brought a wealth of experience and leadership to the Hardrockers and Felderman will have a tough time replacing them. “They left big holes to fill,” the coach said as she embarks on her 28th year with SD School of Mines. As competitions start out for the 2008-09 campaign, Felderman gave the schedule a once over to see what her team is up against and came up with a fairly direct strategy. “I made the schedule last year but I really hadn’t analyzed it,” Felderman said. “It’s a coach’s clique but we are just going to take it one game at a time. It’s unfortunate because we don’t really have any seniors again this year and we have to rely on our underclassmen. It seems like almost every year we have to do that.” Looking at the lineup, the Hardrockers roster one senior, four juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen. Jessica Tsingine (a 5-foot-8-inch guard from Tuba City, Ariz.) is the lone senior on the team although this is just her South Dakota Mines Women’s Media Guide

second year donning the blue and gold. She played two seasons for Mesa Community College in Arizona. “She’s still learning the system,” Felderman said. The core of the SDM team lies with the juniors. Bethany Holyoak (6-1 post from Moorcroft, Wyo.), Nicole Martin (511 forward/post from Missoula, Mont.) and Leah Sundby (a 5-11 forward/post from Williston, N.D.) will be looked to fill the primary leadership roles for the Hardrockers. “The chemistry and the energy from them are very good,” Felderman said of her three veteran juniors. “Bethany has been solid for us since her freshman year. She had an outstanding year as a freshman and I thought she could have been the DAC Freshman Player of the Year. Even last year she was scoring in double figures and wasn’t too far behind in rebounds.” Sundby and Martin are good on the boards and should be a real asset in the transition game. All three are comfortable in the system and know their roles. SDM has a talented group of sophomores as well. Jerika Ihnen (a 5-10 forward from Tea, S.D.) had a breakout first season. She earned the DAC Freshman of the Year Award and was a great asset in the paint for the ‘Rockers. “Jerika will be a factor inside. She’s a very smart player,” Felderman said. Felderman also had good things to say about her other second-year players.

3

Loryn Schuetzle (a 5-10 forward from Pierre, S.D.) is developing nicely and is becoming a threat both inside and outside. Stephanie Bjustrom (a 5-7 guard from Algona, Iowa) has great ball skills and can play either the No. 1 or 2 positions. Cayla De George (5-7 guard from Colorado Springs, Colo.) provided depth a year ago and the coach says De George has improved a lot from last season, while Whitney Ashford (a 5-7 guard from Littleton, Colo.) is also getting better and has a nice touch from the perimeter. “When you have returners you can just go forward and pick up where you left off. But every year it seems like we have to start from scratch. It’s just a learning curve,” Felderman said. “If you add a year of playing experience it’s a whole different world. There is always that freshman fog — I don’t care how good you are, there is still that learning curve.” The Hardrockers have three newcomers to the 2008-09 version. Junior Natasha Begay and freshmen Maria Luze and Ariel Granillo. Begay comes from Mesa Community College as well. She is a 5-7 guard from Page Ariz., who could be an immediate impact player for SD Mines. “She’s very heady and has a great shot,” Felderman added. Another Arizona kid is Granillo who comes from Chandler, Ariz. At 5-6, Granillo will be a No. 1 or 2 guard and be in charge of running the offense. She has had a couple of preseason setbacks with injury but should still be a good addition to the team. Luze is a Brookings, S.D. native standing 5-8 and is also an interchangeable guard. “She’s a versatile player and very strong,” the coach added.

4

Overall as a team, Felderman said the Hardrockers are in the right frame of mind and are eager to gel as a complete unit. “These girls have great attitudes going into the season and we look forward to the learning experience. That’s what these girls do it for,’ Felderman said. The Dakota A t h l e t i c Conference has always been filled with parody from No. 1 to 8 for women’s basketball and this season doesn’t seem to be any different. Jamestown College was picked to win the conference with Minot State and Black Hills State a close second and third. The Hardrockers came in at No. 4. But according to Felderman, pre-season polls, especially in the DAC, don’t hold a lot of water. Looking at the schedule the Hardrockers square off with a lot of teams from the Great Plains and Frontier Conference in the non-conference portion. “We play several of the GPAC schools which should be a good test. We also go up to Montana and play Rocky Mountain and Carroll College which will also be good for us,” Felderman said. Once the conference schedule kicks into gear, the Lady Hardrockers will have their hands full, but trips to North Dakota may favor the young squad. “We did a good job on the road last year. I was proud of the kids. Especially that long trip — 12 hour bus ride, get out and play and then drive five more hours and play again,” Felderman lamented. But no matter who they play, the Hardrockers go back to that one shining goal that was just barely out of reach a year ago. “I always go in with the idea that we are going to win the conference and go to the national tournament,” the coach said.

DR. ROBERT A. WHARTON, PH.D., PRESIDENT OF SDSM&T Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society. Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council’s Polar Research Board.

HUGH WELSH, ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Hugh Welsh has been the Athletics Director at the South Dakota School of Mines for 14 years. He also spent 19 as the head coach for SD School Mine men’s basketball program (1986-2005) and compiled a 268-273 won-loss record (.495 winning percentage). Hugh Welsh joined SD School of Mines after a very successful eight-year coaching stint at Devils Lake Region Community College in North Dakota. His teams won 194 games in eight seasons. The son of two Ph.D. recipients, Welsh appreciated strenuous academics, and wanted to coach at a university with high standards. His dedication to high academics grew, and he came to revel in trying to overcome SDM’s perennial underdog status. That’s not easy when you attempt only to recruit athletes who can succeed academically at Mines and when you battle the athletes’ competing interests. Welsh took team to A NAIA National tournament in 1997 and has two conference championship titles to his credit. Welsh, replaced Jim Kampen in 1986 as Hardrocker men’s basketball coach and took over for Erv Mont as Athletic Director in January of 1995. He is the second longest tenured coach in the men’s basketball program behind Bob Hunt who coached the Hardrockers for 21 years. He has more wins than any men’s coach in school history. He was named the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year on two occasions. His career coaching record is 545 wins and 380 losses.
