Rapid City and the Black Hills

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second-largest city. The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. ROBERT A. WHARTON, PH.D. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; PRESIDENT OF SDSM&T Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society. Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Polar Research Board.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

DAN KRATZER Dan Kratzer will enter his fourth season as the Hardrocker head coach this fall. He was selected as head coach after five seasons as receivers coach and assistant head coach at Kent State University in Ohio. Kratzer spent six seasons as head coach at Lindenwood University in Missouri from 1995-2000, where he guided the team to its first ever NAIA playoff game in 1998. He served as head coach at Hastings College in Nebraska, from 1990-1994, where he won conference championships in 1991 and 1992, and guided the team to three NAIA playoff appearances. He has had additional experience as an assistant at Miami (Ohio) in 1986, as the head coach at Ohio Northern University in 1984 and 1985, and as an assistant at Indiana University in 1983. A native of Lathrop, Missouri, Kratzer received a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in physical education from Missouri Valley in 1971, and earned his masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in education from Central Missouri State University in 1976. He was selected in the 8th round of the 1972 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and moved to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1973. He served in 1982 as the administrative assistant for Coach Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers summer camp. He and his wife Suzanne have two grown children, daughter Danielle and son Reggie, who played for his father at Lindenwood. They are proud grandparents of Danielle's daughter Reaghan.

SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR OKLAHOMA '69 THIRD SEASON AT MINES

LONNIE MESSICK After the 2004 season and being responsible for coaching the leading tackler on the Kent State University, Defense coach Messick was called to duty to train a military unit in Belgium, Congo. After six months extended duty he is back coaching as Special Teams Coordinator here at the South Dakota Mines. Coach Kratzer says he is glad to have such an addition to our staff, and will bring the type of discipline, intensity and most of all long term commitment that our players here so deserve. His coaching stops include Kent State, Hargrave Military Academy, Marine Military Academy, Naval Academy and Bowie State University. In addition, Messick has coached numerous interservice teams at U.S. Marine Corps bases, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (1977-79); Camp Pendelton, California (1981-82); and Parris Island, South Carolina (1983-84). He retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Lietenant Colonel following 28 years in the service. Messick graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in education. He and his wife Virginia reside in Rapid City. Their family includes daughter Jessica and son Scott and his wife Deirdre and twins Jake and Matt, and daughter Caroline. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rugby and lacrosse. He brings much knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a Physical Therapist in Rapid City, for 12 years.

2008 SEASON PREVIEW By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines

RAPID CITY — The South Dakota School of Mines football program has taken a new approach concerning the 2008 campaign. Instead of setting a long list of obtainable goals for the season, the Hardrockers have simplified their approach — “take it one day at a time.” “Our goal this year is to focus on today, and that’s a day-by-day issue,” said fourth-year Hardrocker head coach Dan Kratzer. “If we can do that and become better every day then the sky is the limit for the potential of this football team. That’s the most important thing for us.” Kratzer added that there are still goals out there that the team wants to get — like posting a winning record, competing in the upper half of the conference and being in the hunt for a Dakota Athletic Conference title. But those things will come in time. Last season the Hardrockers finished the year with a 3-7 overall record while posting a 1-6 mark in the DAC. The 2007 campaign could just as easily been 5-5 if a couple of plays would have had different outcomes, but that’s football. SD Mines did accomplish some good things last year and hope to use that as a stepping stone to make 2008 even better. “We think this football team is better right now then our

one last year at this time. And I am not taking anything away from last year’s team, we are just in a better position this time around,” Kratzer said. “The one thing we want to be able to do this year is keep the defense off the field and score points. We feel like we are on the right track to get that done.” The Hardrockers had to say farewell to five seniors — Lukas Munsell (WR.RB), Charlie Hankins (DL), Mike DeStigter (DL), Antony Rud (DB) and Steve Perez (WR). Those five seniors con-

tributed a lot to the ‘Rocker program the past five years. “(Hankins and DeStigter) were defensive guys that spent a lot of time on the field. Charlie was a three- or four-year starter and DeStigter played off-and-on for all four of his years here. Rud was a guy in the secondary that came on and did a real good job in his senior year and also played well on special teams,” Kratzer said. “Perez played on both sides of the ball. He played some in the secondary one year but was primarily a receiver. He was a spot player and real dependable guy. And we would have had about 50 percent (less) of the offense if we wouldn’t have had Lukas last year. That’s the kind of impact he had.” Kratzer added that when a playmaker leaves, like the five seniors, it leaves a void in either the offense or defense. But the coach said that even though an athlete can be hard to replace, the Hardrockers have a lot of depth at all those positions to keep things intact. “When the program gets stronger and better we would like to have 15 to 20 seniors. We just haven’t had that yet,” Kratzer said. The ‘Rockers list nine seniors on this year’s roster — Chad Westendorf (DB), Matt Fisher (DB), Jarrod Luze (LB), Joshua Jones (RB), Jordan Anderson (DL, P), Colton Clark (DL), Matt Deardoff (OL), Justin Griesinger (OL) and Michael Kennedy (DL) With twice as many seniors on the squad this year, Kratzer said the team is full of leadership. Westendorf, Griesinger, Luze and Clark have all stepped into those roles to steer the team in the right direction. “Those are the guys that have kind of stepped up in (last) spring and took leadership roles. We are counting on those guys to continue to do that,” Kratzer said. “Those guys are heavily depended on. And they are guys we can hang our hats on.” Kratzer added that the leadership is more performance based and kind of a lead-byexample system. Basically all of the seniors on the 2008 team have seen significant playing time which has earned them a ton of respect among the underclassmen. “The fact that we do have more numbers in that senior class, and all those guys have playing and starting experience — those are key factors,” Kratzer said. “Our leadership comes very much from just performance. It’s a different style of leadership from our senior class.” Breaking down the team, Kratzer pointed to the defense as

a major strength of the unit. The line backing crew along with the secondary both have a lot of talent with some veterans mixed in with some talented new players. Junior Tyrell Anderson returns as the top linebacker. After earning All Conference First Team honors in 2007 and leading the team in tackles, he is back bigger and stronger. Luze is also among the top players in that unit along with newcomer Eric Yeash, a freshman from Colorado that has a real nose for getting to the ball carrier and bringing him to the ground. In the secondary, Westendorf is one of the cornerback along with sophomore Dustin Meneley (DAC honorable mention in 2007), who had an outstanding freshman season. Tom Lunzman (DAC second team selection in 2007), who also shined as a freshman has earned the starting free safety position and newcomer Todd Sherman is at the strong safety spot. “We knew that coming into the season. We felt that would be a big plus for us to have that kind of experience back and to have some depth,” Kratzer said. On the other side of the ball, Kratzer said the offensive line has really gelled together and appear to be the foundation for the offense. Deardoff and Griesinger have been playing on the O-line for a number of years and really anchor the group. Add in big Kayne Ree and Mark Olson at either tackle position along with Dave Randall and Clint Kling sharing time at center and they form a pretty impenetrable wall. “Everyplace else, except for tight end position, is young players,” the coach said.

Junior Jason Beilstein made the transition from quarterback to tight end a year ago and it was a good move by all. Beilstein is a good sized target that can catch the ball and get down field quick. “Jason made a good and unselfish transition to the tight end spot,” Kratzer said. “After that all our receivers are young guys.” Not only the receivers, but the starting quarterback also enters the college ranks as an untested freshman. Nick Russell from San Diego, Calif., however has an awesome presence behind center. He is able to read defenses, scrambles like an upperclassman and has an outstanding arm. He should have a stellar rookie season. The Hardrockers have a brand new running back that should be a sparkplug as well. Jamie Dale, a freshman from Alpine, Calif., is an elusive back with great speed that will burst on to the scene this year. He has similar qualities to that of Munsell as a grinder. Mix him in with Jones and the Hardrockers have a pretty solid tandem in the backfield. “That’s a real plus in a lot of ways. I think it speaks highly of the type of character they have,” Kratzer said of his new players. “ It takes a team to make good performances and there are a lot of people who will put forth great efforts to allow (these) underclassmen to have success (this season).” Special teams should be another pleasant surprise this year. The Hardrockers have a stable full of kickers and punters along

with a solid core of return men to get SDM into plenty of scoring opportunities. Rapid City sophomore Justin Whalin returns as the PAT and field goal kicker. Kratzer said he is confident in Whalin’s ability and expects good things from him. Sophomore Everett Brill has emerged as the No. 1 place kicker while sophomore Joseph Berke and senior Anderson are in the spotlight as punters. Kratzer said he is pleased in this aspect of his team and hopes they can stay consistent when kicking the ball. As for the return game, Meneley had an excellent freshman year and should be a big contributor again this year along with Dale and sophomore Logan Smidt.

Looking at the conference, there aren’t really any surprises this year as Black Hills State, Minot State and Jamestown College are all bucking for that top spot. Black Hills and Jamestown were both nationally ranked in the preseason while Minot has some solid returners on their roster including one of the top running backs in the country in senior Nick Banks. “There are no surprises right now that we can see. They are three solid programs in the league and that’s what we want to become,” Kratzer said. SD Mines ranked seventh in conference. “We are going to have to earn respect game by game from our DAC opponents,” Kratzer added.

Chad’s favorite moment was the Dakota State game in which the Hardrockers defeated the Trojans in Madison. He is a key returning player and should do some damage this year against opposing offenses. Chad has great ability to get in front of passes thrown his way and either pick them off or bat them down. In 2007 he had three INT’s and seven break ups. Chad played 9-man football in high school and he enjoys doing anything outdoors.

Joshua is a talented junior college transfer student, who comes to South Dakota Mines from Santa Ana College. Before that he spent a year on the Air Force Academy’s team as well. During his senior season of his high school career, Joshua rushed for 1,020 yards. Also during his senior year he was named to the Sunset All League team and earned the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Award. Joshua gave a stellar performance as a junior for SD Mines leading the team in scoring with 30 points off five touchdowns. He was second with 698 all purpose yards and tallied 598 rushing yards for the season. Joshua is getting married in June, 2009 and it’s little known that he is quite the handyman when it comes to plumbing and electronics. Year 2007 TOTAL

Michael was an all conference and all state selection during his high school career at Pine Bluffs High School. He got some quality minutes in 2005 and 2006 and added to that last season playing in a majority of the games.

Joe says he comes from the big city and is a fun and outgoing guy. He was a two-year varsity letter winner and starter in high school. He helped his football team earn postseason playoff berths both his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, Joe threw for 1,100 yards and connected for eight touchdown passes, completed 80 of 140 passes and was also the punter. Joe’s parents are a real influence to him as his father is a football coach and his mother is a civil engineer. Dustin also holds the SDSM&T record for longest interception return, picking off a pass against Minot and taking it 100 yards back for a touchdown. In high school he was an All-State wrestler and track standout competing in the hurdles. In his high school student-athletic career, Dustin earned All County honors in football, all district, all region and all state in wrestling and was an all county track runner.

Logan was a real find, coming to South Dakota School of Mines from a small, but successful, football program. Logan is 13th on South Dakota High School all time list for rushing 370 yards (9-man) in one game during the 2005 season. He broke the 1,000-yard rushing mark in both 2005 and 2006 and was an all state honorable mention running back both those years too. His biggest Hardrocker highlight came in October when SD Mines defeated Dakota State in Madison, S.D. When not on the gridiron, Logan likes to spend time outdoors, hunting and fishing.

Jamie possesses a lot of speed and quickness and ability to move the ball up and down the football field. He played high school ball for the Steele Canyon Cougars, was named to the All-Academic team in San Diego, Calif., for 2007 and was the No. 5 rusher in the entire San Diego area with 279 attempts for 1,533 yards — which averaged to be 6.6 yards per carry and 153 per game. Dale also averaged 12 yards per reception his senior year and scored a whopping 20 touchdowns.

He has been clocked running the 40-yard dash at 4.75 seconds, can bench 350 pounds, can squat 435 pounds and has a vertical jump of 26.8 inches. His scholastic statistics are just as impressive, boasting a GPA of 4.1. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earned first team all conference, first team all league and scholar athlete of the year. He comes from a small Californian town and enjoys all kinds of sports. He also plays the guitar.

He plans to study Mining Engineering when he comes to the South Dakota School of Mines. His claim to fame is that he is one of two people in his school to get second team all state. He also was a first team all conference selection as a senior as well.

Competing for the Broncs, Colen has earned All State honorable mention as a fullback for two straight years, been named to the BHC All Conference Team twice and earned the South Dakota All State Team Player Award as a fullback. Off the field, Kling finished high school with a 3.72 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He grew up on a ranch and enjoys skiing.

Colin is from San Antonio, Texas, where he played football for the College Park Cavaliers on the offensive line. He helped College Park to a 9-2 record in only the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second year as a varsity program. The Cavaliers were the only new school in the state of Texas to make the playoffs in its first two years of athletics. Colin has a number of accomplishments during his high school career on and off the field, including: earning 15-5A second team all district honors; was a four-year member of the National Charity Roundtable; and volunteering for several different organizations (Interfaith Habitat, Senior Citizens, Tamina Community Center, Katrina Relief Funds and reading programs for elementary schools). In his free time, Colin enjoys building and fixing computers.
