HARDROCKER FOOTBALL South, Dakota, Tech/ WetcoMtes Dr. Charles ftjucJk/
T
'he South Dakota School of Mines and Technology welcomed Dr. Charles Ruch
to campus as the university's 17tn president. He comes to South Dakota Tech after serving as president of Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.
"I'm glad to be here," Ruch said. "I'm excited to work with everyone on campus to take this wonderful university to a new level of excellence. I also look forward to working with my colleagues at other universities to find ways to enhance the educational opportunities available to students, and with community organizations and agencies that want to join with us to make Rapid City and the Black Hills even better places to live."
Dr. Charles Ruck* President ofSt>SM& T
Ruch succeeds Dr. Richard Gowen, who left campus June 30, 2003 after 16 years as Tech's president. South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds appointed Gowen director of the Homestake Laboratory Conversion Project. uch had been president of Boise State University for 10 years. Under his leadership, the school grew into Idaho's largest university, serving 17,000 students in a rapidly growing metropolitan area. The unirversity's research and development budget grew to $20 million during Ruch's tenure.
R
Among many other issues, Ruch will direct his attention toward economic development. "I was very interested in the work under way here in South Dakota to link higher education and economic development," he said. "Public higher education has much to offer by way of its research capacity and faculty expertise to South Dakota's economic development resources." Ruch will also focus on new ways to collaborate with Tech's sister institution at Black Hills State University. "South Dakota Tech and Black Hills State have complementary missions," Regents President Harvey C. Jewett said. "We are anxious to put Dr. Ruch's leadership, in concert with Black Hills State President Tom Flickema, to work in this area." uch has doctorate and master's degrees in education from Northwestern University, and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster in Ohio. Prior to his time at Boise State, Ruch served 11 years at Virginia Commonwealth University — first as an associate dean and dean, and for the remaining six years as provost and vice president for academic affairs. His first university assignments came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair.
R
An active participant in regional and national higher education organizations, Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He has also served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences and currently serves as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. He was actively involved in the Boise community, where he has chaired the United Way board and the Future Foundation of Boise and has served on the chamber of commerce board. He and his wife, Sally, have four grown children.

HARDROCK CLUB BOARD OF DIRECTORS President: Hugh Boyle Vice President: Paul Elder Treasurer: Dr. Howard Boyle Lori Coble J.P. Duniphan Lori Litzen Steve Malone Mitch Slusarski Executive Director: Tom Rudebusch
was organized to support the athletic program at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. It is the central fund raising organization responsible for developing competitive, championship teams at Tech. All level of contributions provide you with a membership in the Hardrock Club and the satisfaction of providing educational and athletic opportunities for many student-athletes. The value of a successful athletic program is immeasurable to the athletes, coaches, faculty, alumni, fans, and friends of SDSM&T and is the result of a 100% effort by everyone. We need to continue to build on the foundation established over the past 50 years by the Hardrock Club. But, to continue to build, our growth must be reflected both in the amount of contributions, as well as the number of contributors.
ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS... Membership in the Hardrock Club allows deserving students to attend South Dakota Tech. Athletic scholarships allow some of the best student-athletes in the region to attend one of the top engi•JQejENjnp^^ __i_i&__^ . 2003
