SDTGCh campus prof He... The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, founded in 1885, has been a national leader in preparing world-class engineers and scientists. Our graduates design, construct, and operate modern technology to meet complex challenges such as global warming, health care delivery, energy resource development, mineral extraction and processing, environment quality, futuristic transportation, and national defense. Our alumni are held in the highest regard by their fellow leaders in industry, consulting, government, health, and education. Tech has diversified to meet the needs of engineering and science throughout the world. South Dakota Tech's intellectual environment was shaped a century ago by the ingenuity and rugged individualism of pioneers who provided the inspiration. Today Tech remains on the cutting edge in the fields of engineering and the sciences. SUT6CII volleyball coach. Kristy Allgier (All-gire) has been named Head Volleyball Coach and Intramural Director at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Allgier has been an assistant volleyball coach at National American University the last two seasons and an assistant at Rapid City Central High School the past four years. She replaces Connie Mettille, who left Tech for a teaching position at Winona State University in Minnesota. Allgier was a member of the NAU's volleyball team and graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor's of science degree in Sports Medicine. "I am very pleased Kristy has accepted our offer to become our new volleyball coach", offered Tech Athletic Director Hugh Welsh. "She is a knowledgeable volleyball person and will bring a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to the program. This is a wonderful opportunity for her to begin a career as a head coach and I know she will do very well." Tech finished 20-16 last season and 7-5 in the DAC-10 Conference. "I am excited about this position and I am looking forward to August 12 when our players report to fall camp," said Allgier. Her husband, Matt, works for Morton Buildings in Rapid City.

...2000 preview

SDTech

No area sport will be as different this fall as college volleyball. Teams have to face a whole new style of play with the change to rally scoring and new serving rules. How a team responds to those changes will go a long way toward determining what kind of season they will have. Kristy Allgier is determined that SDTech will survive those changes and continue the improvement the Hardrockers showed last season. Allgier is Tech's new head coach, having replaced Connie Mettille, who was the DAC-10 coach of the year in 2000. Under Mettille last season, the Hardrockers showed big improvement and ended the season with a 20-16 record after having finished 5-29 the previous season. Allgier hopes she can continue to lead Tech in the right direction. "So far the team is adjusting well. The team is liking the improvements we've made." The Hardrockers figure to be a veteran squad in 2001 with four returning starters-Megan Barnes, Lindsay Young, Molly Barnes and Jami Zilles. Megan Barnes was an AII-DAC-10 selection last year. Tech also figures to get a boost from freshman Mandi Kerr of Laramie, WY. Kerr was a redshirt freshman in the Univ. of Wyoming's volleyball program last season, but has now transferred to Tech. "We have lots of pieces," Allgier said. "We're trying to fit them together to make a puzzle. We're looking forward to a successful season." The Hardrockers didn't go far to find Allgier. She was an assistant coach with National American University the past two seasons and played volleyball with NAU, graduating in 1999. Allgier got some good experience with NAU the past two seasons as the Mavericks qualified for the NAIA National Tournament both years. Tech is Allgier's first head coaching position. Allgier's chief goal coming into the season was to help the Hardrockers speed up their game-an absolute necessity given the rule change to rally scoring. "With rally scoring, (the game) will go a lot faster," Allgier said. "Every point counts. Every serve counts. Now every serve is a point." Allgier also hopes to help Tech keep its defense focused longer after sometimes having a tendency to fizzle out last season. "We want to win every game that goes five sets," Allgier said. In addition to her duties as volleyball coach, Allgier is also the Intramural Director for Tech.

The Hardrock Club was organizd to support the athletic program at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. It is the central fund raising organization responsible for developing competitive, championship teams at Tech. All level of contributions provide you with a membership in the Hardrock Club and the satisfaction of providing educational and athletic opportunities for many student athletes. The value of a successful athletic program is immeasurable to the athletes, coaches, faculty, alumni, fans, and friends of SDSM&T and is the result of a 100% effort by everyone. We need to continue to build on the foundation established over the past 50 years by the Hardrock Club. But, to continue to build, our growth must be reflected both in the amount of contributions, as well as the number of contributors. ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS... Membership in the Hardrock Club allows deserving students to attend South Dakota Tech. Athletic scholarships allow some of the best student-athletes in the region to attend one of the top engineering schools in the nation.
