Basketball SDTecb Carapas South Dakota Tech has been a national leader in preparing world-class engineers and scientists since 1885. Our graduates design, construct, and operate the most modern technology to meet complex challenges such as global warming, health care delivery, energy resource development, mineral extraction and processing, environmental quality, futuristic transportation, and national defense. Our alumni are held in the highest regard by their fellow leaders in industry, consulting, government, health, and education. Tech continuously adapts to meet the needs of engineering and science. Rugged individuals and pioneers in engineering and science founded Tech's intellectual environment more than a century ago. Our faculty and students carry on that tradition today. South Dakota Tech is a state-assisted university that provides graduate and undergraduate degrees in science and engineering, as well as an associate of arts degree in general studies.

Basketball DR. CHARLES P. RUCH Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch's professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Tech, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Tech, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren.

Basketball Coaches Hagh Welsb - Head Coach Hugh Welsh enters the 2004-2005 season as the dean of coaches in the DAC-10 Conference. Welsh begins his 19th year at Tech, his 32nd year as a head coach, and his 33rd year overall in coaching with a career record of 533-363 (.595). That includes an 83-43 high school coaching mark, a 194-64 junior college record, and a 256-256 mark at Tech. His coaching career began at Wolford (ND) High School in 1973. Welsh coached the Hardrockers to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in 1997 and was selected as SDIC Coach of the Year (Tech's former conference) on two occasions. Welsh served as Athletic Director and head basketball coach for eight years at Lake Region Community College in Devils Lake, North Dakota, where his team's captured five Mondak Conference titles. A graduate of Valley City State and the University of Mary where he earned a M.S. degree, Welsh manages a ten-sport program and works with the SDSM&T Hardrock Club to increase support for the athletic department. He was very involved in helping to merge the North Dakota Conference and four former SDIC schools into the new Dakota Athletic Conference or DAC-10. An excellent golfer, Welsh has captured the North Dakota State Stroke Play Championship , the North Dakota Medal Play title along with the two-man championship and two South Dakota State Preseniors titles. Son Sean, 18, enjoys basketball and golf and attends Rapid City Stevens High School. Hugh's wife Heidi, is the head volleyball coach at Rapid City Central High School.
