SDSM&T is located in Rapid City which lies between the mysterious South Dakota Badlands and the magnificent beauty of the Black Hills. Only a short distance from the campus is the majestic Mt. Rushmore and the emerging Crazy Horse Monument. With 56,000 residents Rapid City offers many diverse and interesting attractions for college students. Protection from the adjacent mountains produces unexpectedly mild winters, when it is common for temperatures to risen into the 50's and 60's. The Black Hills offer Tech students such activities as hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding, camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and mountain climbing. President
DR. CHARLES RUCH
Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Tech, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Tech, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren.
Athletic Director
HUGH WELSH
Hugh Welsh retired after the 2005 season as head basketball coach at South Dakota Tech but continued his duties as athletic director. He oversees an 11 sport program that has approximately 150 athletes competing. One of the challenges is the future of the DAC Conference and Welsh has worked with fellow DAC athletic directors this year on what changes may lie ahead. A graduate of Valley City State, he earned his masters degree at the University of Mary. He joined the Tech staff in 1986 and ended a 33 year coaching career with 545 wins. His wife Heidi is the head volleyball coach at Rapid City Central. He has one son, Sean, who is 19 and is a budding sports journalist, having covered games and written feature stories for the Rapid City Journal.

HARDROCKER BASKETBALL Hardrocker Basketball Coaching Staff
Head Coach
JASON HENRY Jason Henry is a native of Minot, ND, and just completed his third season as the Hardrockers assistant men's basketball coach. During this time he coordinated the team's recruiting efforts and helped in all aspects of the program. He played high school basketball at Minot Bishop Ryan and college ball at Minot State, where he graduated in 1997 with a degree in physical education. Henry's coaching career began as an assistant at Minot Bishop Ryan in 1994. He continued as an assistant with stops at West Fargo, ND, and Minot State. He then served as head boy's and girl's coach at PBK High School (Pingree, Buchanan, and Kensal) in ND, and two seasons as head boy's coach at Washburn, ND. The following season Henry then returned to the college level with a two year stop at the North Dakota School of Science, a junior college in Wahpeton, as an assistant. During his last year there in 2002, the team finished with a 31-2 mark and set 14 school records. He coached team North Dakota during the summers of 1999-2002 which traveled to Australia and Hawaii to compete in international play. Along with his coaching duties over the years, Henry has taught business and physical education classes at the high school and college level. "I look forward to building my relationships with the people on campus and in the Rapid City area," said Henry. "Tech is a wonderful place to coach and Rapid City is a beautiful place to live. I have been blessed to have worked with a number of hall of fame coaches and learned so much from Coach Welsh the last few years. I am anxious to implement my style of play along with the styles that have become part of me from the people I have worked with in the past. With an up-tempo style offense and pressure defense, we hope to have some very exciting basketball in the future. We have been able to get some of the top student/athletes around the area because of the excellent academic background at Tech. I plan on continuing to bring in these top notch student - athletes and build upon the foundation that Coach Welsh and SD Tech has built. I hope the community will continue to become more a part of SD Tech and appreciate the student/athletes that represent the school and community so well." Henry is married to Anne who is a dental hygienist in Rapid City.
