president SDTecfl Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch's professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Tech, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Tech, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren. SOUTH DAKOTA

2005 season preview SDl6Cn Coach Doug Tabbert's comments about the upcoming season: Without question, we look for significant improvement over last year. Hopefully, we will see that early in the season. Our overall talent level is improved and we have depth at some positions for the first time in my tenure, so those things are encouraging. Our biggest challenge will undoubtedly be our youth and our lack of experience. We have to replace four starters from last year. In addition, we have no seniors and only two juniors, so we will actually be younger than we have been in either of the past two seasons. How well our younger players handle themselves will be the biggest determinant of how successful we are. Fortunately, we have some returnees that we think are ready to do some good things for us and we have some incoming players that we feel can contribute right away. We return our top ball-handler from last season in Jennie Malone. She is a solid defensive player and serve receiver, so we will expect her to strongly contribute in those areas. We also need her to be more of a factor attacking, and we will be looking for that. Jen Markoff is more settled in now, so we expect her to be very solid in the setter position. She played very well at the end of our brief spring season, and we look for that to carry over. We also have various other returnees that can significantly help us with ball control and serving if they will embrace the importance of those facets of the game. Several of our incoming players have the ability to significantly contribute right away. Jenny Hiykel is a very solid defensive player that we are excited to have. Tessa Howe gives us depth at the setter position and she can challenge for playing time immediately. We also have several freshmen that bring us improved size and athleticism in the front row. Stephanie Carpio is probably the most ready to play person in that group, but she certainly isn't the only one from which we expect to receive contributions. There are three to four other newcomers that can help us right away. It's basically a question of which of those players most covet the opportunity to play and perform accordingly. With the departure of the University of Mary, Dickinson State would appear to be the favorite to win the conference. They have signed a substantial number of recruits and they should have a significant international presence, so I would expect them to be quite strong. After that, things could get interesting. Several of the higher-finishing teams of last season lost all-conference caliber players, including Dakota State, Jamestown, and Minot State. The incoming recruiting classes that schools have may substantially dictate how the conference race ultimately finishes.

SDlGCn volleyball coaches Head COach Doug Tabbed Doug Tabbert begins his third season at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology after serving for two years as the head volleyball coach at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. Prior to that Tabbert was the head volleyball coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina for three years. In addition to coaching, Tabbert has provided psychological skills training to various athletes, including the Kansas State University volleyball program, the Bluffton College (Ohio) women's basketball program and a member of the 1996 United States Olympic Track & Field Team. A native of Perry, Kansas, he holds a Master of Education degree in Developmental Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Bachelor of Science degrees in both Business and Psychology from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.
Assistant coach Leah Novicki Leah Novicki returns to Tech for her first year as assistant coach for the Lady Hardrocker Volleyball team. A native of Casper, Wyoming, Novicki played volleyball and basketball for Tech from 1991-1995. She was selected for the SDIC f All-conference team for volleyball for three years (92-94), and was selected as MVP of the conference in her junior and senior year. She was also selected for the district and regional first teams her senior year. In basketball she was a member of the 1994 team that was the first Tech team to qualify for the national tournament and was selected for the All conference team junior and senior year (94, 95), She is currently 19th on the all-time Lady Hardrocker basketball scoring list with 1,004 points. While in college she participated in ASCE Concrete Canoe competition from 92-95 and was a member of the Concrete Canoe National Championship team in 1995. She graduated in 1996 with a Civil Engineering degree, and then worked in the consulting industry for 8 years in a variety of states. She played club volleyball in Wisconsin for two years from 98-2000 and Boston for one year (2001) and has always been active playing volleyball in leagues since then. Novicki still enjoys being active - playing volleyball and basketball in leagues and has volunteered to both volleyball and basketball in grade school programs. She now appreciates the work that is involved with being a coach and better understands her past coaches a little more now that she has made the transition from player to coach. Leah looks forward to contributing to the volleyball and track programs at Tech as much as she can. "I'm excited to be working with the great student/athletes that Tech provides and honored that the institution has allowed me this opportunity," offered Novicki.
Assistant coach Lori Whiting Lorie Whiting begins her third season as Lady Hardrocker assistant coach. A1989 graduate of Tech with a degree in metallurgical engineering, Lorie was a member of the Hardrocker volleyball team for four years from 1985-1988, where she was an AII-DAC performer. She worked in private industry following graduation for 10 years and also served as an assistant volleyball coach at Wahoo (NE) High School in 1999. Lorie is married to Keith Whiting (a 1989 graduate with a math degree), and is currently a stay at home mother to Catie, age five, and Tessa age three.
