RAPID CITY AND THE BLACK HILLS South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state’s second-largest city. The city of 60,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. The Badlands represent some of the world’s greatest fossil resources as well as serving as an outdoor laboratory for the School of Mines.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT South Dakota School of Mines and Technology embraces research to solve problems of industry, the military, government agencies, and to generate economic development in Rapid City, the Black Hills, and the state of South Dakota.
FY 05 RESEARCH FUNDING Approximately 50 School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 98 research awards totaling $12.7 million during the 2005 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the Army Research Laboratory, Air Force Research Laboratory, National Science Foundation, NASA, U.S. Department of the Interior, the State of South Dakota, and more.

Lady Hardrockers young but prepared for 2006-07 season By Brad Blume Sports Information Director RAPID CITY ---- Even though the South Dakota School of Mines women’s basketball team doesn’t roster a single senior for the 2006-07 season, the Lady Hardrockers still have a vast amount of experience, return a trio of juniors that all started last season and have a good quantity of playing time as well as talent under their belts. The Rockers lost five girls from a year ago and will have eight freshmen on this season’s team. “On a lot of other teams, girls don’t play until they are juniors, but our (juniors) have played quite a bit (since they were freshmen),” said Lady Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. Making up the junior class is Jennie Malone (5-foot10-inch guard) from Rapid City, Melanie Vedvie (5-7 guard) from Lake Preston and Amber DeWeerd (5-10 forward) from Rock Valley, Iowa. Vedvie was the 2005-06 Dakota Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player, as well as a DAC first team selection. She led the Hardrockers, and the conference, in scoring with 564 points last season --- averaging 19.4 points a game. She also tallied 106 assists on the year and was 71 percent from the free throw line (132-186). Vedvie was also second in the conference with 7.69 rebounds per game for a total of 223 and also led the DAC in steals with 107. “She’s dynamic,” Felderman said. “She loves the game and she plays so hard that she leads by example. She led in so many (DAC) categories and she was nationally ranked in a couple as well.” Throw teammate Malone into the mix and the ‘Rockers have a pretty deadly 1-2 combination. Over the past two seasons, Malone has developed her touch from the outside and was the team’s second leading scorer (fifth in the DAC), knocking down 378 points for an average of 14.5 per game. She was fifth in the league for shooting percentage (51) and was just under 50 percent from behind the arc making good on 52-119 for the year which put her third in the conference --- she averaged two three-pointers a game. She also took second place in the DAC to Vedvie in total steals (71). “In high school she didn’t shoot the ball that much, but here she has the green light to shoot,” Felderman
said of Malone. “She has become one of the dominate three-point shooters in the conference. She’s worked on her penetration and has real good anticipation for the ball.” DeWeerd will be utilized as a forward for the Hardrockers. After starting last season, DeWeerd will have a chance to spread her wings and really show what the past two seasons have taught her. She had good stats from a year ago, averaging 10.4 points a game (303 total) and 124 total boards for an average of 4.3 each game. “This is going to be her breakout year. She’s very fluid and we use her inside where she has some good moves,” Felderman said. “But she is good from the outside too. She can penetrate and has an outside shot.” Sophomore Stephanie Carpio (from Yuma, Colo.) is also returning. The 5-11 post player saw some quality 4

minutes as a freshman and should provide support for her teammates. “We are looking for her to step up this year,” Felderman added. After that, it’s all fresh faces on the SDM roster, but even though the team has new bodies, that doesn’t mean they aren’t talented. “I really like the energy that they bring and they seem to be learning quite quickly. It’s just that it takes so much time,” Felderman said. “I am really pleased with practice right now. There is a lot of youth out there, but they catch on quickly. The Hardrockers haven’t had a strong presence in the paint for the past few years, but with the addition of Leah Sundby (5-11 post) from Williston, N.D. and Bethany Holyoak (6-0) from Moorcroft, Wyo., SDM hopes to solidify things underneath. Holyoak comes to Mines from Moorcroft, Wyo., where she was a threetime all state selection. In her senior year, she was also the conference player of the year, averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game. Sundby also received attention from her conference, scoring 13 points and six rebounds per game during her senior season. Nicole Martin (5-11) from Missoula, Mont, is another that should add depth at the post position. Felderman said Martin joining the team has been a nice surprise excelling at crashing the boards and being a shot blocker. “We will be better inside then we were a year ago,” the coach said. The Hardrockers have also added some sharpshooters to the roster in Madi Hotovec (Phoenix, Ariz.,) and
Rachel O’Hara (Humbolt, S.D.). Also new is 5-3 guard Karmen Powell. Felderman said she is being groomed to be Vedvie’s backup. The two players have been matched up all through pre-season practice. Rapid City Central graduate Kayla Goshorn, Dell Rapids native Stephanie Leber and Tauree Blankenship (from Brunssum, Netherlands) finalizes the group of recruits and all should fit in nicely with what the Hardrockers want to do this year. “Just bringing in eight new people, if we could just get on the same page by conference time, I would be real happy,” Felderman said. “And we always want to win conference and we always want to win the national tournament.” Looking at the DAC, things look to be pretty even up and down the line and Felderman couldn’t decide on a clear-cut favorite. “Everybody has great recruits and a lot of teams are returning some awesome players,” Felderman said. “Who knows? It went down to the last week last year.” The Lady Hardrockers finished with an 18-11 overall record a year ago and 8-6 in the conference. Black Hills State ended the Hardrockers’ season in the quarterfinals of the playoffs, 78-73. The Hardrockers will be without Brenda Bassett, Chellsie Smith, Kelly Godecke, Quinn Godecke and Billie Gibson. What the team does possess this year is speed and that is something that the Hardrockers hope to exploit. “We’ve never had a big bang game on the inside,” Felderman said. “We are going to get up and down and utilize our athleticism.

HEAD COACH
BARB FELDERMAN Barb Felderman enters her 26th season as Lady Hardrocker basketball coach. She has guided teams to berths in the NAIA National Tournament in eight of the last 12 years, including appearances in the Final Four in 1998 and 1999. Felderman has coached Mines to a 353-292 (.547) overall record, and to a team record 28 wins during the 1997-98 season. She has coached seven SDIC Championship teams and added DAC10 titles in 2002 and 2005. A native of Doland, S.D, and a graduate of Northern State University, Felderman spent eight years coaching and teaching at Kadoka and Pierre High Schools. She served as head softball coach at Ball State prior to coming to Tech in 1981. She was the Hardrocker volleyball coach until 1993 and won seven SDIC titles. While earning her Masters at the University of Wyoming, Felderman served as assistant basketball and softball coach. Barb and her Lady Hardrocker basketball team have held numerous clinics and camps to teach young boys and girls the fundamentals of basketball and teach them the true spirit of competition. Felderman was honored as South Dakota College Coach-of-the-Year by sportswriters in 1991 and 1998 and has been named SDIC Basketball Coach-of-the Year three times. The Lady Hardrockers have been named South Dakota Women's College team of the year on two occasions by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.

LORI COBLE Lori Coble has been a valuable member of the Hardrocker athletic program for the last 24 years as the women’s assistant basketball coach. Her dedication to the Lady Hardrocker teams and helpful coaching insights have been a big part of Mines success over the years. A native of Presho, SD, Coble graduated from Dakota State where she played four years for the Lady Trojans and was recently inducted into the DSU athletic Hall of Fame. She coached at Plankinton for one season before moving to Rapid City. Coble is a member of the SDSM&T faculty as a biology instructor.
ASSISTANT COACH
MARIA (FOSSUM) CADWALLADER Maria (Fossum) Cadwallader returns to the School of Mines as an assistant coach for the Lady Hardrocker basketball program. A 1996 Mines graduate in industrial engineering, Maria brings a wealth of experience as a former Lady Hardrocker player along with her knowledge of the school. She was the point guard and leader of Hardrockers' first ever NAIA National Tournament team in 1994. She achieved NAIA Honorable Mention All-American status, was the SDIC Conference Most Valuable Player her senior year and holds school records for assists in a season (217) and in a game (19). Following graduation she worked in the construction divisions as District Sales Manager for Ingersoll Rand (1996-2000) and as Sales Manager for Herc-U-Lift, Inc (2000-2005). Maria and husband Ryan, (a 1996 Mines civil engineering graduate and former football player with receiving records at Mines), relocated to Rapid City from Minneapolis with their three-year-old son Jakob.

CAREER NOTES In her first two years as a Hardrocker, Vedvie has tallied 972 total points and hauled in 374 rebounds. Her points' average for those two years is 16.1. After her sophomore season, Vedvie was awarded the Dakota Athletic Conference MVP and was also named to the DAC first team and also named to the NAIA All-American second team. Sophomore Season (2005-06): Vedvie led the Hardrocker charge in her sophomore season, leading the women’s team with 564 total points, averaging 19.4 a game. She also came down with 223 rebounds tallying 7.7 each game. Vedvie also shot 71 percent from the foul line cashing in on 132-186. She also had 106 assists and stole the ball 107 times. Freshman Season (2004-05): Vedvie had an outstanding freshman year as the Hardrockers second highest point getter for the year. She cashed in on 408 points which averaged out to be 12.8 a game. She was also able to collect 151 rebounds for a 4.7 per game average as well as recording 127 assists and 102 steals. She is a member of the 2003 Class A South Dakota championship girls basketball team. PERSONAL Daughter of Joe and Janice O’Hara... majoring in Chemical Engineering ... born on September 12, 1986. Along with basketball, O’Hara was also a four-year letter winner in volleyball and was all conference for three years, was a five-year letter winner in track and placed fifth in the 4x100 relay at the Class A State Track Meet in 2003 as well as been a part of the Tri-Valley High School softball team of which her team was the Class B state champions in 2000 and 2005 and was a part of the all tournament team in 2004 and 2005. O’Hara was also a member of the National Honors Society, Natural Helpers, Mentoring Program, Regent Scholar and Annual Staff Editor.

CAREER NOTES Malone has really developed a lot from her freshman to sophomore season, more then tripling her point production. After two seasons she is averaging 8.4 points a game. After her sophomore year, Malone was named to the Dakota Athletic Conference third team. Sophomore Season (2005-06): Malone really came into her own as the second leading scorer for the Hardrockers last season. She cashed in for 378 points and averaged 14.5 per game. She also had 121 rebounds averaging 4.7 a game. She also came away with 71 steals and had 63 assists. Freshman Season (2004-05): Malone played in almost every game as a freshman. She knocked down 50 points and averaged 2.3 a game and earned 30 rebounds for 1.3 a game. PERSONAL Daughter of Steve and Cherrie Malone... majoring in Interdisciplinary Sciences ... born on March 10, 1986. A double sport athlete who joins the team after volleyball, Jennie will be called upon to help defensively and offensively. She is a good shooter, passer and can play the 1, 2 or 3 positions. In High School Malone was an academic all stater and named all conference twice. She averaged 10 points per game and 4 assists.

CAREER NOTES DeWeerd is one of a handful of returning players to the Hardrockers that has seen quality minutes in both her freshman and sophomore year. In her first two years as a Lady Hardrocker, DeWeerd has amassed 387 points and averaging 6.6 a game. She also has 202 total rebounds which is 3.4 a game. Sophomore Season (2005-06): As a starter last season, DeWeerd tallied 303 points for the year, averaging 10.4 a game. She also recorded 124 total rebounds, bringing down 4.3 a game. DeWeerd added 36 assists and 14 steals to her season stats. Freshman Season (2004-05): DeWeerd saw a lot of minutes in her first season at SDSMT. She played in 31 games where she gathered 84 points and 78 rebounds. She averaged 2.7 points a game and 2.5 rebounds. She also had 20 assists and 23 steals. PERSONAL Daughter of Kevin and Shirley DeWeerd ... majoring in Chemistry ... born March 23, 1985. In high school, Amber averaged 19 points, 8 rebound, 4 assists and 3 steals per game. She also was a standout in volleyball and track. She was an all-state selection in basketball as well as a three-time all conference player. She was named to the Iowa basketball association all state team and was a part of two Rock Valley state championship teams.

LADY HARDROCKER BASKETBALL DR. CHARLES RUCH PRESIDENT OF SDSM&T
Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master’s and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota School of Mines, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents’ councils of the Big Sky, Big West and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch’s professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grants Colleges and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews and book chapters and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Mines, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a biweekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Mines, the community, the state and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children and three grandchildren.
