Rapid City and the Black Hills South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state's second-largest city. The city of 60,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. The Badlands represent some of the world's greatest fossil resources as well as serving as an outdoor laboratory for the School of Mines.
Research and Development South Dakota School of Mines and Technology embraces research to solve problems of industry, the military, government agencies, and to generate economic development in Rapid City, the Black Hills, and the state of South Dakota.
FY 05 Research Funding Approximately 50 School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 98 research awards totaling $12.7 million during the 2005 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the Army Research Laboratory, Air Force Research Laboratory, National Science Foundation, NASA, U.S. Department of the Interior, the State of South Dakota, and more.

SDTech president Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Mines, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch's professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Mines, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a biweekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Mines, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren.
volleyball coaches SDlCCn Head coach Doug Tabbert Doug Tabbert begins his third season at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology after serving for two years as the head volleyball coach at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. Prior to that Tabbert was the head volleyball coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina for three years. In addition to coaching, Tabbert has provided psychological skills training to various athletes, including the Kansas State University volleyball program, the Bluffton College (Ohio) women's basketball program and a member of the 1996 United States Olympic Track & Field Team. A native of Perry, Kansas, he holds a Master of Education degree in Developmental Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Bachelor of Science degrees in both Business and Psychology from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.
Assistant coach Beth Honaker Hometown Walkerton, IN (John Glenn High School) College Northern Michigan University Bachelor of Science in Physical/Health Education - 2004 Master of Science in Exercise Science - 2006 NMU Volleyball NCAA Division II GLIAC Conference Outside/Right side hitter Junior year, 26-1, Conference Champs, Regional hosts Senior year, NCAA-II Elite Eight appearance Previous Coaching Experience Head varsity girl's coach at Gwinn High School (Gwinn Ml) for 6 years Track Experience 4 years high school (hurdles, throwing, and jumping events) 2 years teaching track and field at NMU Quote "I am pleased to join the Hardrocker volleyball and track and field programs at the School of Mines. Working with student-athletes and being able to coach has always been a dream of mine. I look forward to assisting coach Tabbert and coach Schafer in building strong programs." Coach Tabbert's Quote "I'm delighted that Beth will be joining our volleyball coaching staff. She played in one of the nation's truly elite Division II programs and was an important member of a team that went 26-1 her junior year and advanced to the Elite Eight her senior year. In addition, she was a head high school coach for six years, so she has had substantial experience as both a player and a coach. College coaching is her career focus, so I think she will be a true asset for both our volleyball program and our track and field program."
SDTech 2006 season preview Coach Doug Tabbert's comments about the upcoming season: The 2006 season has the potential to be a solid season for us. We return virtually everyone from last year's squad, so our level of experience this year compared to last year is substantially higher. In addition, we have some newcomers that bolster our overall talent level significantly. This season is truly a chance for us to improve our level of competitiveness in the DAC, and we need to step up and do that. The biggest key to our success will be improved play at the net. With the exception of Jennie Malone, who led the conference in hitting percentage in 2005 as a sophomore, we struggled to terminate offensively last season. That has to change this year if we are to compete in our conference. Fortunately, we see signs of significant improvement in that aspect of our play. Junior transfer Agnieszka Koperek gives us an experienced outside hitter while sophomore Stephanie Carpio continues to emerge at that position. Freshman Katherine Hanson, who was a stand-out middle in high school, joins Malone and sophomore Amanda Cammack as the other leading offensive players on our squad. Our ball control should be solid this season. Jenny Hiykel was an impact player at libero for us last year as a freshman, and she should be one of the premier defensive players in the DAC this year. Junior Quana Higgins gives us another solid defensive specialist after playing both setter and outside hitter the past two years. Setter play is arguably our biggest strength going into the season. Sophomore Tessa Howe and junior Jen Markoff both have starting experience, so I feel that we have both quality and depth at that position. The DAC race is hard to call thus far. Dickinson State had a tremendous recruiting class, so they should be the clear favorite. After that, things are up in the air. Minot State and Dakota State, who finished second and third respectively last year, both experienced substantial personnel losses while Valley City State and Mayville State both have new coaches. It could really be competitive from the second place spot on down.
