FACTS 2007-2008
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has a proud heritage of excellence in preparing graduates to serve as leaders in the professions of engineering and science. The university provides graduate and undergraduate degrees in science, engineering, and interdisciplinary sciences. There are 16 academic departments organized into two colleges: the College of Engineering, and the College of Science and Letters. A total of 32 degree programs in engineering and science are offered at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. Our students, in combination with an exceptionally talented faculty and great support from the community, provide an exciting environment for education excellence. Award-winning undergraduate education is enhanced by graduate education and research and development in areas of critical need to the state, nation, and the international community.

RAPID CITY AND THE BLACK HILLS
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state’s second-largest city. The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. The Badlands represent some of the world’s greatest fossil resources as well as serving as an outdoor laboratory for the School of Mines.
FY 07 RESEARCH FUNDING
School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 72 research awards totaling more than $17.1 million during the 2007 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.

HARDROCKER FOOTBALL DR. CHARLES RUCH — PRESIDENT OF SDSM&T
Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master’s and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents’ councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch’s professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining the School of Mines, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve the university, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
DAN KRATZER
Dan Kratzer will enter his third season as the Hardrocker head coach this fall. He was selected as head coach after five seasons as receivers coach and assistant head coach at Kent State University in Ohio. Kratzer spent six seasons as head coach at Lindenwood University in Missouri from 1995-2000, where he guided the team to its first ever NAIA playoff game in 1998. He served as head coach at Hastings College in Nebraska, from 1990-1994, where he won conference championships in 1991 and 1992, and guided the team to three NAIA playoff appearances. He has had additional experience as an assistant at Miami (Ohio) in 1986, as the head coach at Ohio Northern University in 1984 and 1985, and as an assistant at Indiana University in 1983. A native of Lathrop, Missouri, Kratzer received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Missouri Valley in 1971, and earned his master’s degree in education from Central Missouri State University in 1976. He was selected in the 8th round of the 1972 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and moved to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1973. He served in 1982 as the administrative assistant for Coach Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers summer camp. He and his wife Suzanne have two grown children, daughter Danielle and son Reggie, who played for his father at Lindenwood. They are proud grandparents of Danielle’s daughter Reaghan. DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR OKLAHOMA '69 SECOND SEASON AT MINES
LONNIE MESSICK
After the 2004 season and being responsible for coaching the leading tackler on the Kent State University, Defense coach Messick was called to duty to train a military unit in Belgium, Congo. After six months extended duty he is back coaching as Defensive Coordinator here at the South Dakota Mines. Coach Kratzer says he is glad to have such an addition to our staff, and will bring the type of discipline, intensity and most of all long term commitment that our players here so deserve. His coaching stops include Kent State, Hargrave Military Academy, Marine Military Academy, Naval Academy and Bowie State University. In addition, Messick has coached numerous interservice teams at U.S. Marine Corps bases, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (1977-79); Camp Pendelton, California (1981-82); and Parris Island, South Carolina (1983-84). He retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Lietenant Colonel following 28 years in the service. Messick graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He and his wife Virginia reside in Rapid City. Their family includes daughter Jessica and son Scott and his wife Deirdre and twins Jake and Matt, and daughter Caroline. Also during his senior year he was named to the Sunset All League team and earned the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Award.

Jason showed great poise coming in as a freshman as the starting quarterback. He was able to learn a lot during his inaugural season and in his debut on the new surface at O’Harra Stadium, recorded three touchdown strikes. He put on 15 pounds in the off-season and is well on his way to lead the Hardrockers in 2007.

Zach lived up to his expectation coming in as a starting freshman at linebacker. He was good at pursuing to the ball, and proved it by collecting 4.5 tackles for loss in 2006 for a loss of 21 yards. He led the team in all purpose yards, racking up 829.

Joe’s parents are a real influence to him as his father is a football coach and his mother is a civil engineer.
