Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.The Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society.Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council's Polar Research Board.

Dick Kaiser, new Athletics Director at SD School of Mines Dick Kaiser earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Colorado, a master's in educational administration from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in athletic leadership and administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his post-doctorate in health education and administration at Oregon State University. For the past 10 years, Kaiser has served as the AD for Defiance College. Previously, he served as AD at Olivet College, Western Oregon University, and Willamette University. Dan Kratzer will enter his fifth season as the Hardrocker head coach this fall. He was selected as head coach after five seasons as receivers coach and assistant head coach at Kent State University in Ohio. Kratzer spent six seasons as head coach at Lindenwood University in Missouri from 1995-2000, where he guided the team to its first ever NAIA playoff game in 1998. He served as head coach at Hastings College in Nebraska, from 1990-1994, where he won conference championships in 1991 and 1992, and guided the team to three NAIA playoff appearances. He has had additional experience as an assistant at Miami (Ohio) in 1986, as the head coach at Ohio Northern University in 1984 and 1985, and as an assistant at Indiana University in 1983. A native of Lathrop, Missouri, Kratzer received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Missouri Valley in 1971, and earned his master's degree in education from Central Missouri State University in 1976. He was selected in the 8th round of the 1972 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and moved to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1973. He served in 1982 as the administrative assistant for Coach Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers summer camp. He and his wife Suzanne have two grown children, daughter Danielle and son Reggie, who played for his father at Lindenwood.They are proud grandparents of Danielle's daughter Reaghan and Reggie and Laura's daughter Kadence.

Dieringer brings a wealth of knowledge to the 'Rocker staff with 19 years of coaching experience at the college level. Dieringer has coached at NCAA Div. II, Div. Ill and NAIA levels as an offensive coordinator and offensive line coach â&#x20AC;&#x201D; most recently at Dodge City Community College in Kansas. "It's a real pleasure to have Dan on board. It will be a big plus for the program and obviously a big help to me to have a full-time offensive guy that has great experience," said Hardrocker football coach Dan Kratzer. "We've worked together five years previously and that helps a lot." Dieringer also served under Kratzer during a very successful stint (19952000) at Lindenwood University in Kingshighway, Mo. It was there that the two turned the Lions from a below .500 team to a program that is a perennial NAIA national contender.The duo took the Lions to their first ever NAIA playoff game in 1998. "The last time we were together, we had a lot of success," Dieringer said of working with Kratzer. "At the time we got into Lindenwood, the program had never had a winning season. We took them to the playoffs. We were able to take them from a 'where-are-they-on-the-map' kind of school to what they are now." Also over the past 20 years as a college coach, Dieringer is credited with coaching 27 all conference players, l4AII-American players, nine Academic All-Americans and nine athletes that went on to play professional football. As far as working for SD School of Mines, Dieringer said thanks to previous experience, the offense should have no problems adjusting as he is in sync to coach Kratzer schemes and game plans. "We've worked together and have the same offensive philosophy," Dieringer added.

Lonnie Messick Special Teams Coordinator / Linebackers

Phone: (605) 355-3025 Email: Lonnie.Messick@sdsmt.edu After the 2004 season and being responsible for coaching the linebackers and had the leading tackier on the Kent State University, Defense coach Messick was called to duty to train a military unit in Belgium, Congo. After six months extended duty he is back coaching as Special Teams Coordinator here at the South Dakota Mines. Coach Kratzer says he is glad to have such an addition to our staff, and will bring the type of discipline, intensity and most of all long term commitment that our players here so deserve. His coaching stops include Kent State, Margrave Military Academy, Marine Military Academy, Naval Academy and Bowie State University. In addition, Messick has coached numerous interservice teams at U.S. Marine Corps bases, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (1977-79); Camp Pendelton,California (1981-82);and Parris Island, South Carolina (1983-84). He retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Lieutenant Colonel following 28 years in the service. Messick graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in education. He and his wife Virginia reside in Rapid City. Their family includes daughter Jessica and son Scott and his wife Deirdre and twins Jake and Matt, and daughter Caroline.

Giangrosso, originally from Wichita, Kan., has a wealth of knowledge about the game, bringing 20-plus years experience mostly coaching at the college level. He most recently served a three-year stint at NCAA Div. Ill Bethany College in West Virginia. "I was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator," Giangrosso said. "I've done both sides of the ball, but been mostly on the defensive (during career)." Including in his duties at SD Mines, Giangrosso will also be doing some recruiting, with his area including: northern Wyoming, eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Being a veteran coach, Giangrosso will bring a few new wrinkles to an already solid Hardrocker defense. On the grand scale however he wants to keep things a little simpler, using the old philosophy of "you get out what you put in." "I want these kids to come in and understand that if you play hard, you work hard and do things like that you're successful," Giangrosso said. "One of our (team) goals is to pay attention to details.Take care of the little things like work on your technique, work on your fundamentals and be very sound.That is my goal for these kids. I want them to be successful. Giangrosso has played high school and college football at the linebacker position. He has a wife (Patsy) and four boys (Eric, a sergeant in the army for 14 years, Patrick, an assistant wrestling coach at Missouri Valley College, Dominic, attending Missouri Valley College and Jacob, who just graduated high school and is starting a career in the army).

Dustin Thomas Defensive Line Coach

Dustin Thomas grew up in Mountain View, Wyo. He joins the Hardrocker football program as the defensive line coach. He is a graduate of South Dakota School of Mines, earning a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He is very familiar with the football team as he was a member of the Hardrocker program from 2000-2005. Dustin has been around athletics his whole life, but joining the coaching staff last season was a new experience in that role. Dustin and his wife Amanda are expecting their first child later this fall and are very much looking forward to that. "Both working and going to school at SD School of Mines have been great experiences. The people here are great, and the atmosphere is second to none," Thomas said."Having the opportunity to be involved with the Hardrocker Football team and Hardrocker athletics, is a very rewarding, and I'm really looking forward to this upcoming season."

Greg Hodgin Running backs Coach

Greg Hodgin is a native of Rapid City where he played football for the Rapid City Stevens Raiders, graduating in 1999. This will be Greg's first opportunity to coach at the college level with the Hardrockers. He has also been the baseball coach for Rapid City Central for the past two seasons. "I am excited for the opportunity to help the Hardrockers in any way I can and I am glad to be here at South Dakota School of Mines."

Scott Baird Head Athletics Trainer

Scott Baird is a 1997 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and is in his third year as head athletic trainer at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both men's rugby and lacrosse. He brings much knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a Physical Therapist in Rapid City, for 14 years.

Season Preview

By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY â&#x20AC;&#x201D;After posting the first .500 season in over 10 years during the 2008 campaign, the South Dakota School of Mines football program is ready to show even more improvement for the 2009 season as the Hardrockers keep climbing the ladder not only in the Dakota Athletic Conference but also the NAIA. After an impressive start to the season in which the 'Rockers routed their first two opponents (Haskell College and Trinity Bible College) SD Mines got some recognition around the league as a team on the rise. So much so that the Hardrockers received votes in the NAIA Top 25 coaches poll. SD Mines proved in 2008 that they were able to compete with every single team in the conference. Most of those games were decided by one or two plays which if had a different outcome could have given the 'Rockers a few more wins. The biggest highlight of the 2008 year arguable came during the last game of the season, when SD Mines hosted Black Hills State, the Hardrockers biggest, and oldest rivals. After a very competitive contest, the Hardrockers earned a hard-fought victory over a team that had been to the NAIA playoffs the previous two seasons and had defeated the Hardrockers earlier in the season. Many different factors contributed to the success the Hardrockers experienced in 2008.A good recruiting class along with a group of seasoned veterans are a couple of those factors. The Hardrockers had a several seniors that contributed to the 5-5 season: including DAC all conference players Chad Westendorf (DB) Matt Deardoff (OL) and Colton Clark (DE).AIso helping the squad last season were: Michael Kennedy (DL), Justin Griesinger (OL), Jordan Anderson (DL) Matt Fischer (DB)Jarod Luze (LB) and Joshua Jones (LB).This group of seniors provided

some much needed leadership to a young Hardrocker team as well as point them in the right direction. The Hardrockers were also treated to a very talented recruiting class with a couple of new players jumping right into playmaking roles and becoming instant contributors. The biggest new outstanding playmaker was that of freshman running back Jamie Dale who proved to be a reliable back with impressive speed. In his first season for the Hardrockers he rushed for over 800 yards, scored 12 touchdowns and set a new SD Mines school record for most points scored in a single season with 88. He also earned DAC All-Conference first team honors. Another newcomer was pushed into the spotlight as Nick Russell became the starting quarterback after

then sophomore Joe Sanchez suffered a leg injury on the first day of practice and was lost for the season. Russell stepped up and delivered all season long. He finished the year with almost 2,000 passing yards. He was 196-298 for 61 percent accuracy and threw 13 touchdown passes. Expect both of these athletes, who are both from San Diego, Calif., to deliver even more in 2009 with a year of college football experience under their belts. The Hardrockers will have a number of players who can play multiple spots. One of those is Dustin Meneley, from Naples, Fla. Meneley was recruited as a defensive back and kick returner. He did both those jobs for the 'Rockers in 2008 very well. So much so that he was named to the Victory Sports/Fanz All American second team as well as receiving DAC All-Conference first team honors on special teams and honorable mention as a DB. Look for Meneley to do more of the same this season and also look for him to make an impact on offense. With his speed, the coaching staff hope to exploit that and hope to make him a potent part of the offense. Senior tight end Jason Beilstein, from Lodi, Calif., will also have a big role in the Hardrockers' success this year.The 6-foot-5-inch receiver has made an outstanding adjustment after making the transfer last year from the quarterback position. He led the team in reception yards in 2008 with 508. He also had five touchdown catches to boot. Defensively, look for senior linebacker Tyrell Anderson to have a big role in helping the Hardrockers to the next level.Anderson also earned DAC first team All Conference accolades and has 240 tackles, four sacks, six fumble recoveries, five pass break ups and one interception to his credit.Anderson does very well in the middle of the field and can sniff out the ball like a blood hound. As a senior he should have no problem stepping into a leadership role as he's been doing that anyway for the past two seasons. Another Hardrocker that is making a name for himself is junior defensive backTom Lunzman. Lunzman is fast become a DB that opposing quarterbacks do not want to throw near.Already in his first two seasons he has I I interceptions to his credit and has broken up eight others. He is very quick and when he does steal the ball can gain a large chunk of those yards back. Junior Everett Brill is another of those multi-position football players that will do some good for the Hardrockers this season. He came to SD School of Mines with his defensive skills in mind, but 2009 may see him on the other side of the ball from time-to-time. Defensively, Brill can get to the ball very quickly and is very good at bringing an opponent to the ground. Offensively, Brill is an aggressive runner that can power the ball forward when the situation calls for it. Look for good things from him all over the field in 2009. Some other names that will become familiar with Hardrocker football are: junior kicker Andy Smith, junior linebacker Tim Luchini, senior offensive lineman Kayne Ree, sophomore defensive back Eric Yeash, junior running back Tyler Barth, freshman punter Kolten Jelden and wide receivers Tony Ostheimer (sophomore) and EdWaliczek (junior) to name a few.They will all contribute this season, making the 2009 Hardrockers one of the more balanced teams in decades. In the Dakota Athletic Conference, last season's

league champion, Dickinson State, was predicted to retain the crown in 2009 with Minot State and BHSU filling in the Top 3 spots. Jamestown College was selected fourth with SD Mines in fifth place. How the conference standings actually play out is anyone's guess. Something new to the DAC this year which is directly related to how the actual standings turn out is the Dacotah Bank DAC Bowl.The event will feature all eight conference schools competing in four games at the Fargodome in North Dakota.The pairing will be determined by the DAC at the beginning of November. So after an exciting 2008 season, the Hardrockers are hoping to use that as a stepping stone to do even better in 2009.With a talented roster, a challenging schedule and an interesting event (DAC Bowl), the 'Rockers should do just that.

Rapid City and the Black Hills South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state's second-largest city.The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. FY09 Research Funding School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 92 awards totaling nearly $21 million during the 2009 fiscal year.The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.
