SCHOOL OF MINES & TECHNOLOGY Welcome to the King Center and Goodell Gymnasium, home of the Hardrockers.The facilities recently had a facelift as the women's basketball, men's basketball, women's volleyball and men's football teams all got upgrades to the locker room area.The football team is totally housed at O'Harra Stadium, while the other sports recently had their current facilities modified.The locker rooms are all state of the art to go along with an excellent gym that seats approximately 3,000 plus there is a top of the line fitness center and an indoor pool for use as well.
Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.The Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society.Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council's Polar Research Board.
Dick Kaiser, new Athletics Director at SD School of Mines The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is pleased to announce the selection of Richard (Dick) A. Kaiser as the university's athletic director (AD). Kaiser earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Colorado, a master's in educational administration from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in athletic leadership and administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his post-doctorate in health education and administration at Oregon State University. For the past 10 years, Kaiser has served as the AD for Defiance College. Previously, he served as AD at Olivet College.Western Oregon University and Willamette University. He has received a number of honors and awards from athletics organizations such as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and others.
i Kaiser will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with all NAIA, conference and university rules and regulations. The School of Mines is a member of the NAIA and the Dakota Athletic Conference with 10 programs competing in women's volleyball and men's football, as well as women's and men's teams in golf, cross country, track and field and basketball. Kaiser has two grown children, Cassie and Ryan; one grandson, Jack; and twin grandsons, expected in September.

RAPID CITY —The South Dakota School of Mines recently announced the hiring of new Lady Hardrocker volleyball coach Tiffany Mastin-McCampbell, who joins the SD Mines athletic department after a two-year stint in St. Joseph, Mo., at NCAA Div. II Missouri Western State University. "I've always wanted to coach kids that were at a very high level academically minded as well as athletes that have great character," Mastin-McCampbell said."And that already goes with the philosophy of the kids that are here. They have a high academic standard and already have a great work ethic." With all of her volleyball experience as a coach and a player, Mastin-McCampbell recognizes the requirements to be an athlete as well as a student at SDSM&T and is fully prepared to continue to bring the highest quality of person to the school. "It's kind of a different recruiting base. It's going to be a little bit of a challenge," Mastin-McCampbell said."I try to not only make them a well-rounded athlete, but also a well-rounded person and at a place like this you can actually do that." Mastin-McCampbell wants to instill a winning tradition into her team and get them to enjoy the game and play hard. It's that kind of team, Mastin-McCampbell says, that has the stability to get to the top. "With the right team, (the style of play) would be a very fast tempo," Mastin-McCampbell added. "It would be phenomenal at this level, but it is just going to take time to build that." As far as goals are concerned Mastin-McCampbell has her sights set on the very top and that's getting the Hardrockers to a place they have not been in a number of years. "Obviously winning a conference championship and getting to the national tournament is probably the biggest goal in my mind," Mastin-McCampbell said."With kids like this and the caliber of athlete we have here, you can start rebuilding this program to where it once had been. It's something where we can definitely compete and make that a constant factor."

Luciana Camargo is in her third season as the assistant coach of the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team. Camargo is a familiar name to volleyball fans in Rapid City, spending the last five years just down the road at National American University — as a player and an assistant coach. Camargo graduated from NAU in the spring of 2007 with an Applied Management degree. As an outside hitter for the Mavericks, Camargo was a starter for the team from 2002-05. She was also apart of the program in 2006 as an assistant coach. Camargo grew up in San Paulo, Brazil, finishing high school in 2000. It was there that she learned her volleyball skills. But it wasn't until she came to Rapid City that she was able to play the sport in an organized fashion. During her college playing career, Camargo was named an NAIA All American four consecutive years as well as earned All Region honors all four years she was competing (Region III). And 2006 offered Camargo a chance to experience volleyball from a whole new prospective, helping coach at NAU and bringing the Mavericks another national championship. "I helped a lot with player workouts and recruiting," Camargo said."I was able to bring in three players that are on the team now — good players. I also did other duties that an assistant has to attend to." Now apart of the Hardrocker program, Camargo hopes to project her love and talent for the game onto a new generation of volleyball players. "I really like the game," Camargo said."I can't play anymore, but (coaching) is something I am excited to do. I get a chance to assist coach (McCampbell) and hopefully I get a chance to pass some of my experience on to the (SDSMT) players. I am excited to be here."
Jennifer Ranum Athletic Trainer
Jennifer Ranum is athletic trainer for the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team. She graduated in May of 2007 from National American University with degrees in Athletic Training and Applied Management. Jen became certified in September of 2007. She is a member of both the National Athletic Trainer's Association and the Mid America Athletic Trainer's Association since 2004. She has spent three years at the School of Mines doing outreach as a student athletic trainer and upon graduation was hired and is now in her third year as assistant athletic trainer and intramural director.
SDM Netters Going Through Some Changes in 2009 By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY — "Change" is a pretty good word to describe the South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team as they prepare for the 2009 season. Not only do the Hardrockers have a new coach in Tiffany McCampbell, the SDM team is also adorned with a number of new faces. The squad graduated five seniors from the team, including one of the best libero's in the conference in Jennie Hiykel as well as a Dakota Athletic Conference All-Conference 2nd team selection in Ashley Kauffman. On top of that, the Lady 'Rockers are installing new offensive schemes and plays that just take time to learn. The DAC preseason poll was recently released which had the Hardrockers predicted to finish seventh in the conference. (Not pictured is assistant coach Lucian Camargo.) for where we finished last year (7th)," McCampbell said."What they don't realize is that we actually return four or five starters from that team as well and they all have another year of experience.That will give us hope that will finish the season better then seventh. "Our goal is to be in the top half of the conference." The Hardrockers welcome eight brand new players to the team. And with anything new, there is usually a learning curve, but McCampbell said her new athletes are picking things up fairly quickly. "For the most part they are adjusting well. We have a couple freshmen that are adapting very quickly," McCampbell said. As a whole, McCampbell described her freshmen as a solid, all-around group that is smaller but use their quickness and intelligence to their advantage. "It takes time with freshmen to get them acclimated to a faster paced offensive style with 14 other people," she said. But change is also happening for the veteran players as they have to adjust to not only a new coach and teammates, but a completely new offense. "It's a lot faster and a lot quicker.We are trying to utilize the fact that we are undersized physically," McCampbell said."These are intelligent kids and we are really trying to use the avenues that we are best at." The new scheme is considered a fast offense that uses three middle hitters instead of the traditional two. Once the offense is learned and executed properly, McCampbell feels her team will be able to compete with any
team that steps on the court, noting smarts, ability and more specifically blocking as the things the Hardrockers excel at. "We are a pretty athletic team and a very intelligent team," the coach said."lt's just a matter of trying to get this group to figure out just what type of team we will be. Are we going to be a solid, all-around hard-working team? We need to figure out a team personality." With eight new freshmen along with the returning athletes stepping into new roles it will take time, but the Hardrockers have a good mix to complete the task. SD Mines has just one senior this year in Katherine Hanson, a 6-foot-1-inch middle hitter from Sioux Falls, S.D. Hanson finished with a DAC All-Conference Honorable Mention after recording 221 kills, 17 aces, 312 digs and 71 blocks in 2008. She is already stepping into a leadership role for the 'Rockers and becoming the floor general. "Katherine brings so much more than she is given credit for to this team," McCampbell said."She is a very good player fundamentally and athletically. She is going to be a huge key to this offense as to how fast we can go and whether we can use her as a hitter or a decoy." Junior Paige Corcoran, a 6-0 middle hitter from Pierre, S.D., is another veteran player that is a proven volleyball player that is prepared to lead the squad. She missed some time in 2008 with injuries, but still managed to tally 90 kills, seven aces, 62 digs and 51 blocks. "I am continuing to be impressed by Paige. She has a very good work ethic," McCampbell said."She is still trying to come back from her knee injury and see where that knee can take her. She just keeps getting better every day." Running a three-middle offense, keeping Corcoran healthy is going to be another important factor in the Hardrockers' success in 2009. The third middle hitter has also been with the team for three seasons, but hasn't seen the court much. Karma Garber, a 6-0 middle hitter from Torrington, Wyo., redshirted her first season and was in a reserve spot last year. McCampbell said as a sophomore, Garber would see a considerable amount of action. "The biggest things for Karina are going to be her experience, strength and confidence," McCampbell added."She's done very well in preseason. Photo by and fundamentally sound, but we have to keep working on her confidence." Brad Blume The Hardrockers have a powerful weapon on the outside with Madisen Lane, a 6-0 outside hitter from Fort Collins, Co. She returns with an incredible ability to terminate the volleyball. Lane also had some problems last year with injuries, but was able to play through the pain for a majority of the season. She finished 2008 with 154 kills, eight aces, 91 digs and 42 blocks. "If we can keep Madisen Lane healthy this will hopefully be a breakout year for her," McCampbell said."She can play all the way around, she's a strong, athletic individual and Madi really wants to be a good leader to this team as well." A lot of how Hardrockers fair hinges on Lane's progress through the early part of the season. She is strong and sound and is working on shot selection and other facets of the game. With the exit of the DAC Libero of the year, DAC's MVP senior of the year and holder of many records at SDM, the Hardrockers have replaced Hiykel with Reanna Roberson, a 5-4 sophomore from Windsor, Colo. Roberson was listed as a setter last season. "She has made that switch to libero easy. She looks like she is a lot more comfortable in the libero role
compared to her setting role last year," McCampbell said."She is replacing one of the best lieberos ever, if not the best to play (at SDSMT). Reanna has huge shoes to fill, but was able to get some mentoring from Jennie (last spring)." The setter position was an area of concern last season. The Hardrockers had two freshmen in that role and as they improved, so did the team. This year, SD Mines has some depth at the position, starting with Becky Keilholtz, a 5-5 sophomore from Gwinn, Mich. She returns a year older, more experience and has more confidence to set the ball up. Last year she led the team with 516 assists, had 14 aces and 161 digs. McCampbell added that the offense has been tweaked a little to run more scripted plays which should take pressure off of Keilholtz. The Hardrockers No. 2 setter is 5-8 freshman Alex Mader, from Miles City, Mont. "Alex has done a great job of coming in and being aggressive and has worked hard to learn everything she needs to know," McCampbell said."She fits well in our new system." Fellow freshman Jesse Guthals (from Colorado Springs, Colo.) is a 5-8 left-handed right-side hitter that may also see time at the setter position. "She's just a solid kid," McCampbell said of Guthals."She works very hard to compensate for her lack of height." Ashley Kemnitz (5-7, OH), a sophomore from Vivian, S.D., and Rachel Pakerak (5-8 OH/RS) a freshman from Plymouth, Minn., should also contribute to the 2009 Hardrockers. Kemnitz is coming off a leg injury suffered last spring during track. "Ashley will see some time on the outside. She's coming off a knee injury but has done a great job in preseason. She continues to get better every day," McCampbell said."Rachel can play all the way around as a freshman. She has great ball control - offensively and passing. She is very quiet but she takes in everything around her." Fellow freshmen Kaynsa Bartsch (5-7 OH/DS) from Lubbock,Texas;Justine Sorensen (6-0, MH/RS) from Vermillion, S.D.; Cathene Malin (5-10 OH) from Hudson,Wis.; Brittney LaDue (5-9, OH/RS) from Meadow, S.D.; and Laurette Beal (5-9, RS) from Big Springs, Neb., will all have supporting roles in the Hardrockers quest this season. "Kaynsa is a solid kid fundamentally and I see her pushing Reanna in that libero spot," McCampbell said."Cathene Malin has a very athletic body and we are working on technical training with her. She could see time at either (OH) or (RS).Justine is a freshman middle hitter that we are working to have her gain a lot of offensive experience and add depth to our roster. Laurette and Brittney are new players for us this fall. Our goal is to get them volleyball experience and as much technical training as we can." Despite the change in the coaching staff and the change in personnel and the change in offensive philosophies, McCampbell hasn't lost sight of what she want her team to accomplish.
"The goal is always going to be to get to the national tournament. That's never happened (at SDSMT)," the coach said. "The main goal is to finish in the Top 4 in the conference with sites on the national tournament and really building a foundation for this program." Looking at the conference, McCampbell feels that Black Hills State will the team to beat in the DAC and also thinks Jamestown College, Dickinson State, Minot State and Mayville State along with the Hardrockers will all be slugging it out each week with similar players and skills. So with all the changes that are going on this season for the Hardrockers, time will tell if they will be changes for the better. McCampbell thinks so — and she lets her players know that every day. "We are going to challenge them every day to get better. We will continue to tell them that this is going to be a great program — whether it's a month from now or two years from now — it remains to be seen."

Becky Keilholtz Sophomore Position: S Height: 5'5" Hometown: Gwinn, Ml Major: IS Parents: Ray and Rita Keilholtz Becky led the Hardrockers with assists in 2008 and is a strong contender to do the same in 2009 as the Hardrockers No. I setter. She had a strong high school career including first team all-conference in 2007 and 2008, all-region team in 2008, all state academic in 2008 and second team all conference in 2006. Kanysa Bartsch Freshman Position: OH/DS Height: 57" Hometown: Lubbock,TX Major: Engineering Parents: Sandi Bartsch and Jonathan Young Kanysa finished her high school volleyball career at Lubbock Cooper High School. During her senior year, she was named to the 2008 District 2-3A All-District second team, earned the team Player of the Year honors, was a team captain and earned academic all-state for the second straight year.

She had some injury problems last season but returns healthy and ready to battle. Alex Mader

Parents: Mel and Kara Mader Mader is a 5-foot-7-inch setter that helped her high school team take second place in the Montana State Volleyball Tournament last year. She also aided in winning two consecutive conference and divisional championships. Mader has been named First Team All Conference for three-straight years, First Team All State for the last two years, earned the team Offensive MVP in 2007, the team Hustle Award in 2006 and the team Coaches Award in 2008. She has also earned Academic All-State honors for the past four years in volleyball.

Rachel Pekarek Position: OH/RS Hometown: Plymouth, MN
Freshman Height: 5'8" Major: Engineering
Parents: Scott and Rose Pekarek Rachel's mother, Rose (Schneider) Pekarek was an outstanding volleyball and basketball player while Rachel's father Scott Pekarek was a football and track standout. He currently holds the school record in the 800-meter run. Rachel, comes into the 'Rocker program as an outside hitter. She was co-captain of her high school volleyball team as a senior, was a two-time all conference selection, earned Academic All State honors, was the team leader in aces and digs as a senior and was the kill leader her junior season. Her team took second in their conference and was the first place team in Sectionals and also made a trip to the Minnesota State Volleyball Tournament this past fall. Pekarek was also involved in club volleyball. She is a two-time Junior Olympic National Championships competitor, a three-time player of the month recipient for the Minnesota Select Volleyball Club and also earned the Velocity Hardest Working Award (a weight training program for her club team).

Jessie Guthals Freshman Position: RS Height: 5'8" Hometown: Colorado Springs, CO Major: Chemical Engineering Parents: Theresa and Wayne Guthals Jessie is a right side hitter and defensive specialist from Colorado Springs, Colorado, who excelled at Doherty High School. She also played club volleyball from the Pikes Peak Volleyball Club team. During her senior year, Guthals played in 96 games, tallying 95 kills and was 242-292 on the attack. She averaged almost one kill per game.

Paige Corcoran Junior Position: OH/MH Height: 5' 1 1 " Hometown: Pierre, SD Major: Industrial Engineering Parents: Paula and Ted Corcoran Paige had a very productive sophomore season for the Hardrocker especially in the defensive areas of the game. She will be a key to the 'Rockers success in 2009. Paige earned DAC Scholar honors in 2008 and her biggest highlight was the team getting their first ever conference win over Dickson State. Madisen Lane Sophomore Position: OH Height: 6'0" Hometown: Fort Collins, CO Major: Chemical Engineering Parents: Tom and Stephanie Lane Madi showed what kind of volleyball player she is in her debut season. She is a very impressive volleyball player using great force to terminate balls and is equally aggressive at the net on defense. Teams will have to respect her power and always be aware where she and what she is doing on the court. She battled a few injuries as a freshman but played through them for a good portion of the season. Expect big things from her as the 2009 season progresss. Reanna Roberson Sophomore Position: DS/L Height: 5'6" Hometown: Windsor, CO Major: Civil Engineering Parents: Dennis and Kim Roberson Reanna will move from being a setter in 2008 to the new libero in 2009 with departure of standout libero Jenny Hiykel.The transition will be a smooth one for Reanna as she received some mentoring from Jenny during spring practice. Reanna's highlight of 2008 was earning the MVP Newcomer Award from her team and beating Dickinson State marking the first time that the Hardrockers have earned a DAC victory over the Blue Hawks. Justine Sorensen Freshman Position: MH/RS Height: 6'0" Hometown: Vermillion, SD Major: Civil Engineering Parents:John Sorensen and Bonita Morgan Justine comes to the Hardrocker program as a promising prospect that after some time learning the system could provide some much needed support for the team. She brings depth to the roster and will provide competition to her teammates.

Cathene Mallin Freshman Position: OH Height: 5'10" Hometown: Hudson, Wl Major: Mechanical Engineering Parents: Dale and Lori Mai in Cathene is an outside hitter that played her high school volleyball for the Hudson High School Raiders. She was also a club volleyball standout, honing her skills for the NOMA Stars 18-1 squad in Wisconsin. After her senior season at the high school level, Malin was an all conference second-team selection, earned her team's Offensive Player of the Year Award and received academic all-conference honors.

There are 16 academic departments and more than 30 degree programs in engineering and science offered at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. Facilities South Dakota School of Mines and Technology facilities include the Black Hills Business Development Center, the Darold D.King Physical Education Building,the Chemistry/Chemical Engineering Building,the Civil/Mechanical Engineering Building, the Computational Mechanics Laboratory, the Electrical Engineering/Physics Building, the McLaury Building, Devereaux Library, O'Harra Building, Mineral Industries Building, the Tech Development Laboratory, and Surbeck Center.

Outreach The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology offers programs and activities that teach and entertain K-12 student and community members, including the APEX art Gallery,The Museum of Geology, Engineers Week, Math Contest, Cultural Expo, Design Fair, South Dakota GEAR UP Honors Program, South Dakota Space Grant Consortium, and many more. Rapid City and the Black Hills South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state's second-largest city.The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams, and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life.
FY09 Research Funding School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 92 awards totaling nearly $21 million during the 2009 fiscal year.The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.
