Welcome to the King Center and Goodell Gymnasium, home of the Hardrockers. The facilities recently had a facelift as the women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s football teams all got upgrades to the locker room areas. The football team is totally housed at O’Harra Stadium, while volleyball, basketball and track recently had their current facilities modified. The locker rooms are all state of the art to go along with an excellent gym that seats approximately 3,000 fans. There also is a top of the line wellness center and an indoor pool for use too.

Rapid City and the Black Hills South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state’s second-largest city. The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams, and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. FY09 Research Funding School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 92 awards totaling nearly $21 million during the 2009 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.


Robert A. Wharton, SD School of Mines President Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society. Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council's Polar Research Board.


Dick Kaiser, South Dakota School of Mines Athletics Director Dick Kaiser earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Colorado, a master's in educational administration from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in athletic leadership and administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his post-doctorate in health education and administration at Oregon State University. Before arriving at South Dakota Mines, Kaiser had served as the AD for Defiance College for 10 years. Before that, he served as AD at Olivet College, Western Oregon University and Willamette University. He has received a number of honors and awards from athletics organizations such as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and others. Kaiser is also responsible guiding the Hardrockers in the transition to NCAA Div. II status as well as fundraising for the effort and seeking conference affiliation. SD Mines has10 athletic programs within the department, competing in women's volleyball and men's football, as well as women's and men's teams in golf, cross country, track and field and basketball. Kaiser has two grown children, Cassie and Ryan; four grandchildren, Jack (age 5); twins Caden and Carson (age 2); and Lucy (age 1).


Lori Hodgin, SD Mines Program and Administrative Assistant Lori Hodgin has been the SD School of Mines administrative and program assistant for almost 20 years. Her duties have included: figuring out athletic eligibility each year, game-day administration (meaning hiring students to work at football and basketball games, volleyball matches and track meets. She is also involved in department purchasing and making sure that everything runs smooth in the athletic department on a day-today basis. Lori has lived in Rapid City most of her life, but was born in Los Angeles, Calif. She has a son Greg who is currently employed by the Hardrocker football program as an assistant coach. She is a huge animal lover, donating her time to the Humane Society and on occasion has adopted dogs from there as well.

Jen Ranum, South Dakota School of Mines Athletic Trainer and Compliance Officer Jennifer Ranum is starting her second year as the NCAA Div. II Compliance Officer at the School of Mines making sure that the Hardrockers are kept up to speed on all NCAA rules and regulations and helping student-athletes with eligibility and other questions. She will also be starting her fifth year as the volleyball athletic trainer for the Lady Hardrockers. She graduated in May of 2007 from National American University with degrees in Athletic Training and Applied Management. Jen became certified in September of 2007. She is a member of both the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and the Mid America Athletic Trainer’s Association since 2004. She has spent three years at the School of Mines doing outreach as a student athletic trainer and upon graduation was hired and is now in her third year as assistant athletic trainer.


Scott Baird, South Dakota Mines Head Athletic Trainer Scott Baird is a 1997 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and is in his fifth year as head athletic trainer at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both men's rugby and lacrosse. He brings much knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a Physical Therapist in Rapid City, for 15 years and added two new little twin girls to their family -- Braedyn and Blakely.


Rick Lutes, South Dakota Mines Athletic Equipment Manager Rick Lutes embarks on his sixth year as the South Dakota School of Mines equipment manager. Among a multitude of duties for the Hardrockers, Rick works alongside coaches to coordinate each programs’ equipment needs for practices, games, meets or matches. His duties range from laundry of uniforms to inflating the game balls. Rick has been a multi-sports official for 30-plus years on the high school and college level having held a Masters Level rating with USA Track and Field. Rick has also enjoyed in the past officiating adapted athletics for high schools in Minnesota and the Courage Center of Golden Valley, Minn. Rick has held athletic and event management related positions in Minnesota and Texas Before the move to Rapid City Rick was the Director of Track and Field at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. Rick and his family moved to Rapid City when his wife, Kathy, a pastor, accepted a call to a local Rapid City church. The Lutes’ are parents of two adult sons.


The Voices of the Hardrockers

Public Address Announcer Kevin Phillips has the longest running morning radio show in the Black Hills. Phillips has been announcing ball games since 1980 and has been on the radio since 1982. He's a member of the Rapid City Sports Hall Of Fame and a Black Hills Advertising Federation Silver Medal Winner, which is like the advertising Hall Of Fame. He can be heard on Magic 93.9 weekday mornings from 5:30-10am and on 97.5 The Hills from 2-5pm.

Tom Rudebusch and Tom Mahon broadcast the Hardrocker basketball action every game at home or on the road on 97.5 FM the Hills and 920AM. The duo has extensive knowledge and insight about the game of basketball. Tom Rudebusch has been the voice of the Hardrockers for over 30 years and Tom Mahon is a former Lady Hardrocker basketball coach.

Name: Lee Hosey No. 20 Position: Center Height: 6-6 Class: RS Freshman Hometown: Littleton, CO Major: Chemical Engineering Hosey had quite an impact on his high school hoops team as a senior. He averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds and four blocks each game. As a junior Hosey tallied 54 blocks, which averaged out to just over two a game, and was able to score 10.5 points and grabbed 11 rebounds each contest as well. He was a Colorado All-State second team selection. “He is a skilled power forward with good moves around the basket and has a great knack for shot blockinga,” Coach Henry added. Name: Calvin Thomas No. 23 Position: Forward Height: 6-6 Class: Freshman Hometown: Cypress, TX Major: Chemical Engineering

Thomas posted some pretty impressive stats at the conclusion of his senior season. He tallied 269 points for the year, averaging 10 points and 2.3 assist (62 total) a game. He came down with 158 total rebounds (six a contest) and recorded almost two steals every game (43 on the year). Thomas also helped his team to a 21-8 regular-season finish. “Calvin is a good overall player. He understands how to play the game and has been very well coached,” Coach Henry said


Name: Evan Voog No. 44 Position: Center Height: 6-7 Class: Freshman Hometown: Centerville, SD Major: Mechanical Engineering Voog was team captain for the Centerville Cyclones during his senior season. He averaged 10.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. He also led the team in rebounds (133) and blocked shots (45). He was named First Team All-Conference and earned academic all-state honors. “He’s a good student and he’s a good athlete. He runs the floor well and does a lot of good things for a big kid,” Coach Henry said.

Name: Zeb Lytle Position: Student Manager Class: Sophomore Hometown: Wall, S.D. Major: Chemical Engineering Lytle has been a member of the Hardrocker basketball program for two seasons helping out in anyway the coaching staff asks. He not only helps out in practice but also participates, running drills and getting the varsity team ready for upcoming games. He also got the opportunity to play in a junior varsity contest last season against Oglala Lakota College.


Name: Andrew Rebol No. RS Position: Center Height: 6-8 Class: Sophomore Hometown: Fort Morgan, CO Major: Mining Engineering Rebol was attending Centenary College, a member of the Summit League Conference. Rebol was a freshman post player for the Centenary College Gents.

Rebol started 17 games as a freshman in a conference that features South Dakota State and North Dakota State. The Gents’ schedule also pitted them against the likes of Marquette University (Mich.), Memphis State (Tenn.), Louisiana State and Oral Roberts University (Okla.). “Anytime you can get a 6-8, 250-pound post with good skills you have to be excited about it,” Coach Henry said. He has the experience to help our program in the transition to NCAA Div. II.”

Name: Philip Schanilec No. RS Position: Guard Height: 6-1 Class: Freshman Hometown: Forest River, ND Major: Civil Engineering Schanilec is a North Dakota Mr. Basketball award winner and was a standout player for Midway High School where he helped the Mustangs to a 15-8 overall record. Along with the Mr. Basketball honor, Schanilec was also named to the North Dakota Class B Basketball All-State First Team and chosen as the Class B Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year. “Phillip really is an outstanding young man. He is a combo-guard that is definitely a scorer but could also play a lot at the point guard position for us with his passing ability,” Coach Henry said.


Name: Justin Schock No. RS Position: Forward Height: 6-9 Class: Freshman Hometown: West Fargo, ND Major: Chemical Engineering Schock was an outstanding athlete for the West Fargo High School Packers. Schock helped his team finish with a 15-9 overall record this season and a trip to the North Dakota Class A Boys’ Basketball State Tournament. “Justin has a very bright future,” said Coach Henry. “He’s an athlete with big strong legs, runs the floor well, good facing up to an opponent and gets better every day with his back to the basket.” During his senior year, Schock averaged 12.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. He shot 54.5 percent from the field and recorded five double-doubles.

Jason Henry, a native of Minot, ND, enters his seventh season as the Hardrockers' men's basketball head coach. Under Henry's direction the Hardrockers have made it a priority to win on their home floor as the team has establishing a home record of 37-10 over the past three seasons which has transferred into winning seasons the past three season. He also guided the Hardrockers to appearances in the Dakota Athletic Conference championship game in back-to-back years (2010, 2011) and three of the last five seasons. His efforts also earned him Dakota Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2011 Before being promoted, Henry served as an assistant at South Dakota School of Mines for three years where he coordinated the team's recruiting efforts and helped in all aspects of the program under Hugh Welsh. Henry played high school basketball at Minot Bishop Ryan and college ball at Minot State in North Dakota, where he graduated in 1997 with a degree in physical education as well as corporate fitness. Henry went on to receive his Master's degree in education from North Dakota State University. Henry's coaching career began as an assistant at Minot Bishop Ryan in 1994. He continued as an assistant with stops at West Fargo, N.D., and Minot State. He then served as head boys' and girls' basketball coach at PBK High School (Pingree, Buchanan, and Kensal) in North Dakota, and two seasons as head boys' coach at Washburn, N.D. The following season Henry then returned to the college level with a two-year stop at the North Dakota School of Science, a junior college in Wahpeton, N.D., as an assistant.


During his last year at Wahpeton in 2002, the team finished with a 31-2 mark and set 14 school records. He coached Team North Dakota during the summers of 1999-2002 which traveled to Australia and Hawaii to compete in international play. Along with his coaching duties over the years, Henry has taught business and physical education classes at the high school and college level. "Mines is a wonderful place to coach and Rapid City is a beautiful place to live," Henry said. "I have been blessed to have worked with a number of Hall of Fame coaches and learned so much along the way. It is always exciting to start each year and implement my style of play along with the styles that have become part of me from the people I have worked with in the past. "With an up-tempo offense and pressure defense, we will continue to have some very exciting basketball now and in the future. We have been able to get some of the top student/athletes around the area because of the excellent academic background at Mines. We plan on continuing to bring in these top-notch student-athletes and build upon the foundation that has been established from the past coaches at the School of Mines." Henry is married to Anne who is a dental hygienist in Rapid City and they have a 4 ½ -year-old daughter Gretchen and 3-year-old Enna.

Eric Glenn is a native of Riverton, Wyo., but spent much of his childhood years in Hot Springs where his father was the head football coach. Eric played football and basketball for two years at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., where he was a back-up quarterback and point guard. He then finished his final two years with the Eagle basketball program. He graduated from Chadron State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education (1993). After graduation, he stayed on as an assistant for then head coach, Bob Wood, where he helped the Eagles to their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference league championship. As an assistant at Chadron State he earned a Master of Arts degree in Sports and Recreation Management. In 1995, he went to the University of Wyoming where he was the third assistant on Joby Wright's basketball staff. After a two-year stint at Wyoming, he moved on to Scottsbluff High School where he was the assistant coach on the Bearcats District B-6 championship team that qualified for the Nebraska State Tournament. The next season he went to Missouri Valley College and was the assistant men's basketball coach for the Vikings in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.


In 2000, he was hired as the head coach of Missouri Valley and led the Vikings to their best conference finish in four years, hosted and won play-off tournament games two out of the three years and was nominated for conference coach of the year twice. From 2001 to 2003 he served on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II National Tournament Committee. In 2003 he took the opportunity to move closer to family and became an assistant at Black Hills State University under Mike Kruszynski. Glenn has directed and worked at numerous basketball camps and clinics throughout the Midwest, which have included the University of Wyoming, Colorado State University, Chauncey Billups Basketball Camps, Creighton University, Mike Trader Basketball Camps and Montana State University. He is married to the former Lorna Dahlgren, who played for the Chadron State women's basketball program from 1991 - 1995. She holds career records in assists, steals, rebounds and free throws and is in the No. 2 all-time leading scorer. Lorna is a Chadron State inductee They have one son, Jarek, who is eight and Peyton is two year old
