The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology would like to welcome you to Dunham Field at O’Harra Stadium. The football field and facilities has recently received quite a facelift with the addition of state-of-the art locker rooms, a prestige turf playing surface on the field, a high-tech scoreboard capable of giving in-game statistics and six luxury skyboxes perched over the grandstands enabling fans to watch the game from a whole new perspective. It is truly one of the best facilities in the Dakota Athletic Conference

Rapid City and the Black Hills South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state’s second-largest city. The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams, and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. FY09 Research Funding School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 92 awards totaling nearly $21 million during the 2009 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.


Robert A. Wharton, SD School of Mines President Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society. Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council's Polar Research Board.


Dick Kaiser, South Dakota School of Mines Athletics Director Dick Kaiser earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Colorado, a master's in educational administration from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in athletic leadership and administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his post-doctorate in health education and administration at Oregon State University. Before arriving at South Dakota Mines, Kaiser had served as the AD for Defiance College for 10 years. Before that, he served as AD at Olivet College, Western Oregon University and Willamette University. He has received a number of honors and awards from athletics organizations such as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and others. Kaiser is also responsible guiding the Hardrockers in the transition to NCAA Div. II status as well as fundraising for the effort and seeking conference affiliation. SD Mines has10 athletic programs within the department, competing in women's volleyball and men's football, as well as women's and men's teams in golf, cross country, track and field and basketball. Kaiser has two grown children, Cassie and Ryan; four grandchildren, Jack (age 5); twins Caden and Carson (age 2); and Lucy (age 1).


Lori Hodgin, SD Mines Program and Administrative Assistant Lori Hodgin has been the SD School of Mines administrative and program assistant for almost 20 years. Her duties have included: figuring out athletic eligibility each year, game-day administration (meaning hiring students to work at football and basketball games, volleyball matches and track meets. She is also involved in department purchasing and making sure that everything runs smooth in the athletic department on a day-today basis. Lori has lived in Rapid City most of her life, but was born in Los Angeles, Calif. She has a son Greg who is currently employed by the Hardrocker football program as an assistant coach. She is a huge animal lover, donating her time to the Humane Society and on occasion has adopted dogs from there as well.

Jen Ranum, South Dakota School of Mines Athletic Trainer and Compliance Officer Jennifer Ranum is starting her second year as the NCAA Div. II Compliance Officer at the School of Mines making sure that the Hardrockers are kept up to speed on all NCAA rules and regulations and helping student-athletes with eligibility and other questions. She will also be starting her fifth year as the volleyball athletic trainer for the Lady Hardrockers. She graduated in May of 2007 from National American University with degrees in Athletic Training and Applied Management. Jen became certified in September of 2007. She is a member of both the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and the Mid America Athletic Trainer’s Association since 2004. She has spent three years at the School of Mines doing outreach as a student athletic trainer and upon graduation was hired and is now in her third year as assistant athletic trainer.


Rick Lutes, South Dakota Mines Athletic Equipment Manager Rick Lutes embarks on his sixth year as the South Dakota School of Mines equipment manager. Among a multitude of duties for the Hardrockers, Rick works alongside coaches to coordinate each programs’ equipment needs for practices, games, meets or matches. His duties range from laundry of uniforms to inflating the game balls. Rick has been a multi-sports official for 30-plus years on the high school and college level having held a Masters Level rating with USA Track and Field. Rick has also enjoyed in the past officiating adapted athletics for high schools in Minnesota and the Courage Center of Golden Valley, Minn. Rick has held athletic and event management related positions in Minnesota and Texas Before the move to Rapid City Rick was the Director of Track and Field at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. Rick and his family moved to Rapid City when his wife, Kathy, a pastor, accepted a call to a local Rapid City church. The Lutes’ are parents of two adult sons.


Scott Baird, South Dakota Mines Head Athletic Trainer Scott Baird is a 1997 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and is in his fifth year as head athletic trainer at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both men's rugby and lacrosse. He brings much knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a Physical Therapist in Rapid City, for 15 years and added two new little twin girls to their family Braedyn and Blakely.

The Voices of the Hardrockers

Public Address Announcer Kevin Phillips has the longest running morning radio show in the Black Hills. Phillips has been announcing ball games since 1980 and has been on the radio since 1982. He's a member of the Rapid City Sports Hall Of Fame and a Black Hills Advertising Federation Silver Medal Winner, which is like the advertising Hall Of Fame. He can be heard on Magic 93.9 weekday mornings from 5:30-10am and on 97.5 The Hills from 2-5pm.

Tom Rudebusch and Ryan Cadwallader broadcast the Hardrocker football action every game at home and away on 97.5 FM the Hills and 920AM. The two have extensive knowledge and insight about the game of football. Tom Rudebusch has been the voice of the Hardrockers for over 30 years and Ryan is a former standout Hardrocker football player.

Dan Kratzer will enter his seventh season as the Hardrocker head coach this fall. He was selected as head coach after five seasons as receivers coach and assistant head coach at Kent State University in Ohio. Kratzer spent six seasons as head coach at Lindenwood University in Missouri from 1995-2000, where he guided th e team to its first ever NAIA playoff game in 1998. He served as head coach at Hastings College in Nebraska, from 1990-1994, where he won conference championships in 1991 and 1992, and guided the team to three NAIA playoff appearances. He has had additional experience as an assistant at Miami (Ohio) in 1986, as the head coach at Ohio Northern University in 1984 and 1985, and as an assistant at Indiana University in 1983. A native of Lathrop, Missouri, Kratzer received a bachelorâ€&#x;s degree in physical education from Missouri Valley in 1971, and earned his masterâ€&#x;s degree in education from Central Missouri State University in 1976. He was selected in the 8th round of the 1972 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and moved to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1973. He served in 1982 as the administrative assistant for Coach Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers summer camp. He and his wife Suzanne have two grown children, daughter Danielle and son Reggie, who played for his father at Lindenwood. They are proud grandparents of Danielle's daughter Reaghan.


Dan Dieringer

In his third full year as Offensive Coordinator, Dieringer brings a wealth of knowledge to the „Rocker staff with 20 years of coaching experience at the college level. Dieringer has coached at NCAA Div. II, Div. III and NAIA levels as an offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. “It is a big plus for the SD Mines program and obviously a big help to me to have a fulltime offensive guy that has great experience,” said Hardrocker football coach Dan Kratzer. Dieringer also served under Kratzer during a very successful stint (1995-2000) at Lindenwood University in Kingshighway, Mo. It was there the two turned the Lions from a below .500 team to a program that is a perennial NAIA national contender. The duo took the Lions to their first ever NAIA playoff game in 1998.

Coach Messick has been on the Hardrocker coaching staff since 2005. He has played a crucial role in returning glory to the Hardrocker football program. A former Marine Colonel, Messick was a linebackers coach at Kent State in 2004 before being called back into duty to train a military unit in Belgium, Congo. After six months extended duty he came back to coaching as Special Teams Coordinator here at South Dakota Mines. Coach Kratzer says he is glad to have such an addition to his staff, and will bring the type of discipline, intensity and long-term commitment that the players here so deserve. Messick's coaching stops include Kent State, Hargrave Military Academy, Marine Military Academy, Naval Academy and Bowie State University. In addition, Messick has coached numerous interservice teams at U.S. Marine Corps bases, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (1977-79); Camp Pendelton, California (1981-82); and Parris Island, South Carolina (1983-84). He retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Lieutenant Colonel following 28 years in the service. Messick graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in education. He and his wife Virginia reside in Rapid City. Their family includes daughter Jessica and son Scott and his wife Deirdre and twins Jake and Matt, and daughter Caroline.

Giangrosso, originally from Wichita, Kan., has a wealth of knowledge about the game, bringing 20-plus years experience mostly coaching at the college level. Including in his duties at SD Mines, Giangrosso will be the defensive coordinator as well as doing some recruiting, with his area including: northern Wyoming, eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Being a veteran coach, Giangrosso will bring a few new wrinkles to an already solid Hardrocker defense. On the grand scale however he wants to keep things a little simpler, using the old philosophy of “you get out what you put in.” “I want these kids to come in and understand that if you play hard, you work hard and do things like that – you‟re successful,” Giangrosso said. “One of our (team) goals is to pay attention to details. Take care of the little things like work on your technique, work on your fundamentals and be very sound. That is my goal for these kids. I want them to be successful. Giangrosso has played high school and college football at the linebacker position. He has a wife (Patsy) and four boys (Eric, a sergeant in the army for 15 years, Patrick, an assistant wrestling coach at Missouri Valley College, Dominic, attending Missouri Valley College and Jacob, who is starting a career in the army).

Dustin Thomas grew up in Mountain View, Wyo. He joins the Hardrocker football program as the defensive line coach and video coordinator. He is a graduate of South Dakota School of Mines, earning a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He is very familiar with the football team as he was a member of the Hardrocker program from 2000-2005. Dustin has been around athletics his whole life, but joining the coaching staff in 2008 was his first experience in that role. Dustin and his wife Amanda have a one-year-old boy Aden. "Both working and going to school at SD School of Mines have been great experiences. The people here are great, and the atmosphere is second to none," Thomas said. "Having the opportunity to be involved with the Hardrocker Football team and Hardrocker athletics, is a very rewarding, and I'm really looking forward to another successful season."


Greg Hodgin --- Running backs Coach Greg Hodgin is a native of Rapid City where he played football for the Rapid City Stevens Raiders, graduating in 1999. This will be Greg's second season coaching at the college level with the Hardrockers. Greg will be getting married to his fiancé Linda Lehman this coming June. "I am excited for the opportunity to help the Hardrockers in any way I can and I am glad to be here at South Dakota School of Mines."

Adam Riggers --- Wide Receivers Coach Adam Riggers joins the „Rocker football team in charge of the wide receiving corps. Riggers comes to SD Mines from Boise State University where he was assisting the DFO and recruiting coordinator. Riggers has also been involved in a number of football camps teaching the fundamentals of the game, especially at the quarterback position. We are very fortunate to have Adam Riggers on our staff,” Kratzer said. "He was a quality quarterback at Mid American Nazarene, and had been helping with camps all summer at Boise State. Riggers graduated from Mid America Nazarene University in 2011 where he

played NAIA college football as a linebacker. He also is a talented quarterback as well.
