Welcome to the King Center and Goodell Gymnasium, home of the Hardrockers. The facilities recently had a facelift as the women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s football teams all got upgrades to the locker room area. The football team is totally housed at O’Harra Stadium, while the other sports recently had their current facilities modified. The locker rooms are all state of the art to go along with an excellent gym that seats approximately 3,000 plus and there is a top of the line fitness center and an indoor pool for use as well.

Jerald Schafer - Head Coach Coach Schafer begins his 27th year at the helm of the Hardrocker cross country and track & field programs after serving eight years as an assistant coach at the high school and collegiate levels. An Adams State College (CO) graduate, coach Schafer brings the knowledge, experience and tradition for excellence from that nationally known program to the SDSM&T campus. The belief that hard work and dedication can overcome any challenge is what motivates the athletes on the Hardrocker cross country and track & field teams to strive for excellence in everything they do, and the Black Hills and SDSM&T provide the perfect environment for student-athletes to develop to their fullest potential.
South Dakota School of Mines Track and Field
Steve Johnson - Distance, Jumps, Javelin Johnson brings a wealth of experience to the Hardrocker Track program. He most recently was an assistant coach at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. He's also had stints in Lakewood, Wash., at Pierce College; in Tacoma, Wash., at University of Puget Sound; in University Place Wash., at Speed Tech; and in Pullman, Wash., at the Comets Track Club. "Steve has an expertise in distance running," Schafer said. "But he will also be working with our jumpers and javelin throwers. He has a lot of versatility in those events and it will be an as set for him to help coach. That was one of the driving forces in hiring him over other candidates." Being a full-time assistant, Johnson will also have an instrumental role in the recruiting of both cross country and track athletes. Recruiting was one of Johnson's main duties at the University of Mary and should benefit the Hardrocker program by having him take a strong stance for SD Mines. "Bigger is the goal. We want to boost the programs --especially on the women's side," Johnson said. "Recruiting will help us to regain some of that competitiveness (in the conference) on both sides in track and field and cross country." Johnson comes to Rapid City with his wife Simonne and sons Josh and Zach
South Dakota School of Mines Track and Field Kent Jacobs - Sprints Kent returns to the Hardrocker track & field program where he had a successful collegiate career. Kent is a former 400m School record holder (:48.89) which still ranks as third best all-time for the Hardrockers. He still holds the 4x100m relay record (42.33) with teammates Dain Patterson, Justin Wipf, and Matt Zolnowsky. Kent has assisted with the sprinters since his return to Rapid City in 2008, after many years working as a Mechanical Engineer in Cedar Rapids, IA. He is currently employed by Strider Bicycles of Rapid City.
Jim Stephens – Throws This is Jim’s second year as the throws coach for the SD Mines men’s and women’s track and field teams and a difference can already be seen. Working everyday with the Hardrocker student-athletes, he has been able to teach and observe the proper techniques and has already made a difference as a majority of the throwers continually improve their personal-best marks throughout the season.

By Luke Schweitzer, Assistant Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY – The South Dakota School of Mines will officially begin the 2013 indoor track season Saturday at the Black Hills State Invitational held at the Young Center in Spearfish. The Hardrockers enter the season with increased numbers as this year’s teams will roster 32 men and 18 women. Hardrocker head coach Jerry Schafer enters his 30th year of service to South Dakota School of Mines Athletic Dept. Schafer started his stint at SD Mines as an assistant coach but took the reins and soon developed a successful track and field legacy. Schafer has worked very diligently to produce 72 national competitors, 21 national placers and 17 All-American honors since 1986. Schafer has surrounded himself with a loyal coaching staff he trusts to grow and develop each studentathlete’s strengths in various events and it is a priority of the Hardrocker coaching staff to monitor the academic progress of SD Mines’ student-athletes. “Athletics and academics at SD Mines epitomize what college athletics was meant to be,” Schafer said. “We combine the best of both worlds to better prepare student-athletes for the future.” This season will mark the last year of transition from NAIA to NCAA Div. II athletics for the Hardrockers and the last year the team will not be able to qualify for Nationals. “We are always monitoring our progress based on the national level, however, this season is going to be especially important to see how close we compare at the (Div. II) national level as we finalize our transition,” Schafer said. The Hardrockers have a solid group of upperclassmen returning on both the men’s and women’s teams and look to be competitive with a schedule that has them going up against some solid and established college track programs. Alexis Godeke (a Geology and Paleontology major from Antwerp, Ohio), returning to compete in the distance events, will represent the women’s side as the only senior. Other standouts for Lady Hardrockers’ include: Anna Haneline (a junior Geology major from Plattesmouth, Neb.) and Lillian Temple (a junior engineering major from Glendive, Mont.). They are individuals to keep an eye on and two individuals the Hardrocker coaching staff feel have real potential. At the BHSU Early Bird Invite this past December, Haneline ran the 400-meter in 59.60 seconds, which is less than one second shy of a qualifying national time. Temple is also a potential qualifier in the high jump, triple jump and multi-events. At the Early Bird Invite, Temple set a new school record in the women’s indoor pentathlon. She tallied a total of 3,042 points to establish the new mark. “Our strengths on the women’s side are our solid core of individuals in sprints, throw events and in the distance events,” Schafer said.
As for the men, Thomas Everett (a Civil/ Environmental Engineering major from Missoula, Mont.) will return to run in the distance events, while also representing the team as the lone senior. Athletes on the men’s side to watch for this season are: Brian Freed (a junior Civil Engineering major from Staunton, Va.), Sam Hill (a sophomore Chemical Engineering major from Yankton, S.D.) and Tyler Nack (a junior engineering major from Sioux Falls, S.D.). Freed will compete in the throws events including the weight throw and shot put. At the BHSU meet in December Freed posted distances of 54-feet-11.5-inches in the weight throw and 46-8.25 in the shot. Hill, who represent the Hardrockers in the pole vault and will be competing unattached this year, cleared 14-5.25 and placed high in the event at the Early Bird Meet. Nack, a strong presence in the distance events, will compete in the mile and 3K events. Nack ran a 4:34.44 mile at the BHSU Early Bird Invite, while also posting a solid 3k time of 9:16.87. “We are looking for big things from these three athletes. I expect them to lead their respective event groups,” Schafer said. “Our strength on the men’s side is our depth in the distance events, individuals in each of the field events and our group of young sprinters.” Both the Hardrocker men and women have good numbers this season with the addition of new talent to the program. The men have added depth with 14 freshmen while the women have strengthened their squad adding four freshmen. “I am excited to see who will emerge as our next top Hardrocker athlete,” Schafer added. “We have a lot of new young talent to complement our solid group of returning athletes. “My goals for this season are to prepare and develop our athletes towards the national level. As a coaching staff we will gauge our training through the season to see how to improve. We will keep pushing and prodding towards being competitive on the National level.” The indoor schedule has SD Mines featured four meets in a semi-local setting (three at BHSU and one at Chadron State) and two others taking them to Iowa (Dordt Invitational and Iowa State Last Chance Meet). The Hardrockers were able to break a number of long standing records last season and the coaching staff has the 2013 version primed for another run at the record board. “We will achieve our goal by following our training curriculum of periodization for each event group,” Schafer added. “Our staff has attended professional development conventions to see if we are on par with the most up-to-date training methods and we have learned that our system for athlete development compares to the methods being taught.” Schafer is anxious for the season to get underway as he prepares his athletes to compete at the Div. II level.
