FOOTBALL HEAD COACH ZACH TINKER Zach Tinker was named the head coach of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Hardrockers football program in the spring of 2016. Tinker spent the last four seasons as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Hardrocker. Under Tinker’s direction, South Dakota Mines has become a high-energy offense able to move the ball up and down the football field with ease. Tinker’s style of play and philosophies have yielded a number of Hardrocker team records on the offensive side of the ball, including: total plays, total yards, passing yards, passing attempts, total first downs, and points scored in a season. Tinker was also instrumental in the program earning two winning seasons in the past four years. “I am honored and humbled that President Wilson and our Athletic Director Joel Lueken have put their trust in me to be the head football coach at South Dakota Mines,” Tinker said. “I’d like to thank Stacy (Collins) for bringing me to the Black Hills four years ago to help establish Rapid City’s ‘Hometown Team’ at the (NCAA) Div. II level. Our players are anxious to continue preparation for the 2016 season and the challenging schedule that awaits us in our inaugural (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) campaign.” Tinker said. The Hardrocker offense has also been rated high in the NCAA Div. II ranks as the team boasted the No. 1 red zone offense and the No. 25 scoring offense during the 2013 campaign. “I couldn’t be more excited to have Coach Tinker as our next head football coach,” said Hardrocker Athletics Director Joel Lueken. “Zach brings a tremendous amount of energy, passion and (NCAA) Div. II experience to the head football coaching position. He truly understands the term scholar-athlete, and through his leadership we will continue to graduate leaders in science and engineering from SD Mines.” As an offensive asset to the Hardrockers, Tinker believes the key to football success is being able to make in-game adjustments, being flexible and to attack personnel matchups. He believes an aggressive game plan will net positive results.

South Dakota School of Mines is pleased to announce the hiring of Brian Hardy as the assistant athletic director of sports medicine for Hardrocker athletics, a new position at SD Mines. Hardy will head the Hardrocker sports medicine team, which provides athletic training services to all 13 intercollegiate athletic programs, as well as assist Athletic Director Joel Lueken in managing the SD Mines athletic department. Hardy comes to SD Mines after serving in the same role at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, for the past 12 years. While at UCCS, he was able to provide advice on various facets of daily operations, as well as future goals and missions for the entire UCCS athletic department. Additionally, Hardy oversaw daily operation of the UCCS Mountain Lions’ 14-team intercollegiate sports medicine program, including graduate assistant management, insurance management and policy and procedure development, program budget and ordering, as well as scheduling and physician relationships. “Brian brings a wealth of experience and leadership not just to our sports medicine staff but the Hardrocker athletic department as a whole,” Lueken said. “I’m thrilled to welcome him and his family to our Hardrocker family.”
Brian Hardy Assistant Athletic Director of Sport Medicine
Hardy was also serving as a certified athletic trainer for USA Volleyball, where he provided sports medicine coverage for athletic injury diagnosis, management, treatment, education and referral at domestic competitions as well as various national team camps at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center for primarily youth and junior athletes. USA Volleyball is the national governing body for the sport of volleyball in the United States and is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee. Hardy also held the position of the head athletic trainer for the Mountain Lions from 2003-2004 and was the Health South Sports Medicine Coordinator from 1999-2003 in Colorado Springs. Hardy added, “It is an honor to help support individuals who exemplify the term scholar-athlete, and I will be dedicated to helping them be successful both on and off the field and court.”
Derrick is in his fifth year as an assistant athletic trainer for SD Mines. He is a 2010 graduate of South Dakota State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training. While at SDSU, Derrick spent his senior year as a student trainer for the football team and helped out in all sports as a junior. Before coming a Hardrocker, Derrick was the head athletic trainer for Douglas High School in Box Elder. Derrick's parents have a chiropractic firm in Rapid City where he also works when not assisting the Hardrocker scholar athletes. Derrick's main responsibilities for the Hardrockers will be football and women's basketball.

HARDROCKERS SET FOR RMAC INVASION; READY FOR 1ST YEAR IN NEW LEAGUE RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines Football program has went through some substantial changes since the end of last season. Entering the 2016 campaign, the Hardrockers have not only gotten a new head coach in Zach Tinker, but also will be joining a brand new league --- the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. “We’ve been anxious to finish camp and start preparation for William Jewell (this week’s opponent),” said Hardrocker Head Coach, Zach Tinker. “The players’ attitude and effort has been outstanding and we’ve practiced efficiently and effectively through fall camp.” Last season may have served as a preview of the “High Octane” attitude the Hardrockers take on offense, as they set a school record with running 901 plays throughout the season. “I’ve been most impressed with the leadership of our 21 seniors and how they have embraced the responsibilities that we have placed upon them,” Tinker said.
The first-time head coach, who spent the last four seasons as SD Mines’ offensive coordinator, added that he wants the seniors to lead this team into the “RMAC Invasion of 2016.” There are several familiar names in new roles on the Hardrocker coaching staff. Taylor Breitzman is now the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator while Justin Udy will take over as the Offensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator. Travis Dixon has returned to the Hardrocker Family and will serve as Defensive Backs Coach. New faces Ethan Hutson, Brandon Gorsuch, and Tell Hammerstrom will work with the Offensive Line, Running Backs, and Corners respectively. Last year in their final season in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), the Hardrockers posted a 2-4 conference record and an overall record of 6-5. The move to the RMAC could prove to be a challenging one. In the preseason coaches’ poll the Hardrockers were picked to finish 11th but the Hardrockers have the attitude and desire and appear up for the challenge. The RMAC is a respected football conference --- even nationally. In the latest NCAA Div. II American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Preseason Poll both CSU – Pueblo and Colorado School of Mines were picked in the Top 20, with CSU-Pueblo ranked at fifth. The Hardrockers open the season Saturday taking on William Jewell College in a 12 p.m. matchup on Dunham Field at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City, S.D. If you are unable to attend the game the Sports Information Dept., will be streaming the game and live stats at the RMAC Network on Stretchinternet.com. The game will also be broadcast on the KKLS radio on 104.7 (FM) and 920 (AM).
