The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, founded in 1885, has been a national leader in preparing world-class engineers and scientists. Our graduates design, construct, and operate modern technology to meet complex challenges such as global warming, health care delivery, energy resource development, mineral extraction and processing, environment quality, futuristic transportation, and national defense. Our alumni are held in the highest regard by their fellow leaders in industry, consulting, government, health and education. Tech had diversified to meet the needs of engineering and science throughout the world. South Dakota Tech's intellectual environment was shaped a century ago by the ingenuity and rugged individualism of pioneers in science and technology. Tech's present day pioneers provide inspiration and remain on the cutting edge in the fields of engineering and the sciences. ACCREDITATION The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the recognized accrediting agency for the north central states. In addition, the curriculum in Chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), which is the recognized accrediting agency for engineering, has also accredited all the undergraduate curricula for all SDSM&T engineering programs with the exception of Environmental Engineering which is a new program. The program in Computer Science is accredited by the Computer Science Commission (CSAC) of the Computer Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB), a special accreditation body recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation (COPA) and the U.S. Department of Education. DARREN SOUCY Head Football Coach
JK in |.„,,,;.,,,,,..., iji
Darren Soucy begins his third season at the helm of the Hardrocker Football Team. Before coming to South Dakota Tech, Soucy served as offensive coordinator at Mayville State (ND) for three seasons and was the tight ends and receivers coach at Humboldt State (CA) and Northern State (SD) prior to joining the staff at Mayville State. Despite losing several talented seniors from last year's team, Soucy is excited about the upcoming year. "We have had a great off-season in both the weight room and on the road recruiting, we'll be young and have to be patient." Soucy was a tight end on the Boston University Terrier football team where he played under current Houston Texans offensive coordinator Chris Palmer. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1993 and earned a Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology at Humboldt State in 1997. Darren is a proud parent of son Brandon, age 5.

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is one of ten teams in the Dakota Athletic Conference. (DAC-10). The change in conferences came as a result of an announcement made near the beginning of July 2000, by four teams in the SDIC, SDSM&T's former athletic conference. The University of Sioux Falls, Dakota Wesleyan, Mount Marty and Dordt College announced that they were leaving the SDIC to join the NebraskaIowa Athletic Conference. With the exodus of these four colleges, the SDIC was left with just four teams, ending the conference's existence. The four remaining teams of the SDIC did not hesitate to begin discussions with the North Dakota College Athletic Conference (NDCAC). A meeting held on July 22, 2000 announced the formation of the new DAC-10. The DAC-10 includes the four remaining teams of the SDIC as well as the six schools of the NDCAC. Schools in the new conference include Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Huron University, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Dickinson State University, Jamestown College, Minot State University, Mayville State University, the University of Mary, and Valley City University. The ten teams of the DAC-10 began play in the 2000-2001 athletic season. All Hardrocker teams appreciate the support of alumni and friends. For current information about schedules and team status, check out the Hardrocker Home Page on the web at www.sdsmt.edu/athletics. -20-

All level of contributions provide you with a membership in the Hardrock Club and the satisfaction of providing educational and athletic opportunities for many student-athletes. The value of a successful athletic program is immeasurable to the athletes, coaches, faculty, alumni, fans, and friends of SDSM&T and is the result of a 100% effort by everyone. We need to contribute to build on the foundation established over the past 50 years by the Hardrock Club. But, to continue to build, our growth must be reflected both in the amount of contributions, as well as the number of contributors.
