Welcome to the King Center and Goodell Gymnasium, home of the Hardrockers. The facilities recently had a facelift as the women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s football teams all got upgrades to the locker room area. The football team is housed at O’Harra Stadium, while the other sports recently had their current facilities modified. The locker rooms are all state of the art with an excellent gym that seats approximately 3,000. There is a top of the line fitness center and an indoor pool for use as well.


Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D. President of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society. Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council’s Polar Research Board.


Dr. Dick Kaiser earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Colorado, a master's degree in educational administration from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in athletic leadership and administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his post-doctorate in health education and administration at Oregon State University. Kaiser is in his second year at South Dakota School of Mines. Previously, Kaiser served as the AD for Defiance College, Western Oregon University and Willamette University. He has received a number of honors and awards, including Athletic Director of the year, from athletic organizations such as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) along with others. As AD, Kaiser is responsible for leading the athletics program through all phases of development and fostering an environment of quality instruction and high scholarly and athletic achievement. He also plays a key role in athletic fundraising and continuing to build and maintain relationships with boosters and community leaders. He oversees all operations in the athletic department, including intercollegiate athletic sports; recruitment, selection, development, and retention of coaches and staff; health of student-athletes; and leadership and management of daily operations. During the first year of the job, Kaiser led the university process of applying for membership into the ranks of NCAA Div. II. The school was accepted in July, 2010 and now will begin the three-year program of going full NCAA membership for the 2013-14 season. Kaiser has two grown children, Cassie and Ryan; one grandson, Jack; twin grandsons Carson and Caden and one granddaughter Lucy.

FY09 Research Funding School of Mines faculty members and researchers received awards totaling nearly $34 million during the 2010 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.

Jason Henry is a native of Minot, ND, enters his sixth season as the Hardrockers' men's basketball head coach. Before being promoted, Henry served as an assistant at South Dakota School of Mines for three years where he coordinated the team's recruiting efforts and helped in all aspects of the program under Hugh Welsh. Henry played high school basketball at Minot Bishop Ryan and college b-ball at Minot State in North Dakota, where he graduated in 1997 with a degree in physical education as well as corporate fitness. Henry went on to receive his Master's degree in education from North Dakota State University. Henry's coaching career began as an assistant at Minot Bishop Ryan in 1994. He continued as an assistant with stops at West Fargo, N.D., and Minot State. He then served as head boys' and girls' basketball coach at PBK High School (Pingree, Buchanan, and Kensal) in North Dakota, and two seasons as head boys' coach at Washburn, N.D. The following season Henry then returned to the college level with a two-year stop at the North Dakota School of Science, a junior college in Wahpeton, N.D., as an assistant. During his last year at Wahpeton in 2002, the team finished with a 31-2 mark and set 14 school records. He coached Team North Dakota during the summers of 1999-2002 which traveled to Australia and Hawaii to compete in international play. Along with his coaching duties over the years, Henry has taught business and physical education classes at the high school and college level. "Mines is a wonderful place to coach and Rapid City is a


beautiful place to live," Henry said. "I have been blessed to have worked with a number of Hall of Fame coaches and learned so much along the way. It is always exciting to start each year and implement my style of play along with the styles that have become part of me from the people I have worked with in the past. "With an up-tempo offense and pressure defense, we will continue to have some very exciting basketball now and in the future. We have been able to get some of the top student/athletes around the area because of the excellent academic background at Mines. I plan on continuing to bring in these top-notch student - athletes and build upon the foundation that has been established from the past coaches at the School of Mines." Henry is married to Anne who is a dental hygienist in Rapid City and they have a 4-year-old daughter Gretchen and 2-yearold Enna.

Eric Glenn is a native of Riverton, Wyo., but spent much of his childhood years in Hot Springs where his father was the head football coach. Eric played football and basketball for two years at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., where he was a backup quarterback and point guard. He then finished his final two years with the Eagle basketball program. He graduated from Chadron State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education (1993).


After graduation, he stayed on as an assistant for then head coach, Bob Wood, where he helped the Eagles to their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference league championship. As an assistant at Chadron State he earned a Master of Arts degree in Sports and Recreation Management. In 1995, he went to the University of Wyoming where he was the third assistant on Joby Wright's basketball staff. After a two-year stint at Wyoming, he moved on to Scottsbluff High School where he was the assistant coach on the Bearcats District B-6 championship team that qualified for the Nebraska State Tournament. The next season he went to Missouri Valley College and was the assistant men's basketball coach for the Vikings in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. In 2000, he was hired as the head coach of Missouri Valley and led the Vikings to their best conference finish in four years, hosted and won play-off tournament games two out of the three years and was nominated for conference coach of the year twice. From 2001 to 2003 he served on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II National Tournament Committee. In 2003 he took the opportunity to move closer to family and became an assistant at Black Hills State University under Mike Kruszynski. Glenn has directed and worked at numerous basketball camps and clinics throughout the Midwest, which have included the University of Wyoming, Colorado State University, Chauncey Billups Basketball Camps, Creighton University, Mike Trader Basketball Camps and Montana State University. He is married to the former Lorna Dahlgren, who played for the Chadron State women's basketball program from 1991 - 1995. She holds career records in assists, steals, rebounds and free throws and is in the No. 2 all-time leading scorer. Lorna is a Chadron State inductee They have two sons, Jarek, who is eight and Peyton is two years old.

A native of Charleston, MO., Roosevelt Mitchell went to high school at Charleston, graduating in 2000. Following high school, he attended Southeast Missouri State University and received a bachelor of General Studies degree in 2005. Roosevelt started his coaching career in 2005 under Misouri High School Hall of Fame coach Danny Farmer. "I was blessed and very lucky to be mentored and to work with a guy like coach Farmer," Mitchell said. "He dominated every district and conference that he ever coached. He is a winner in all aspects of life and has instilled those principles into me." Mitchell was an assistend at Charleston High School for five years, helping the team to a state championship appearance three consecutive years, winning the top crown once. He also helped coach the team to four district championships and two conference titles. "After being so successful as an assistant in the high school ranks, I decided to pursue my passion of coaching at the collegiate level," Mitchell added.

Hardrockers’ Training Staff

Scott Baird is a 1997 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and is in his fourth year as head athletic trainer at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both men’s rugby and lacrosse. He brings much knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a Physical Therapist in Rapid City, for 14 years and has two twin newborn girls Braedyn and Blakely.

Jennifer Ranum is athletic trainer for the Lady Hardrocker volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams. She graduated in May of 2007 from National American University with degrees in Athletic Training and Applied Management. Jen became certified in September of 2007. She is a member of both the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and the Mid America Athletic Trainer’s Association since 2004. Jen was promoted to Compliance Officer in the summer of 2010 and will take the lead making sure all rules and regulations are followed during SD Mines transition to NCAA Div. II status.


The Voices of the Hardrockers

Public Address Announcer Kevin Phillips has the longest running morning radio show in the Black Hills. Phillips has been announcing ball games since 1980 and has been on the radio since 1982. He's a member of the Rapid City Sports Hall Of Fame and a Black Hills Advertising Federation Silver Medal Winner, which is like the advertising Hall Of Fame. He can be heard on Magic 93.9 weekday mornings from 5:30-10am and on 97.5 The Hills from 2-5pm.

Tom Rudebusch and Tom Mahon broadcast the Hardrocker basketball action every game at home or on the road on 97.5 FM the Hills and 920AM. The duo has extensive knowledge and insight about the game of basketball. Tom Rudebusch has been the voice of the Hardrockers for over 30 years and Tom Mahon is a former Lady Hardrocker basketball coach.
