Rapid City and the Black Hills
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second-largest city. The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. The Badlands represent some of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest fossil resources as well as serving as an outdoor laboratory for the School of Mines.

School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 72 research awards totaling more than $17.1 million during the 2007 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.

Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003. Ruch holds master’s and doctorate degrees in education from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster (Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President at Boise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, and as provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair. An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He also has served on the presidents’ councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Dr. Ruch’s professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony. In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining the School of Mines, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve the university, the community, the state, and the region. Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and three grandchildren.

Beth Honaker
Beth Honaker, originally from Walkerton, Ind., served as the SDM assistant volleyball coach for one season in 2006. The 2007 tour will mark her first as a head coach at the college level. Previously she was head coach at Gwinn High School (Mich.) for four years. She has a Masters of Exercise Science degree from Northern Michigan University where she played for the NCAA Div. II Wildcats as an outside and right side hitter. As a coach, Honaker said the main thing she wants to instill into her players is the team concept. “I think the biggest thing will be trying to teach the girls that volleyball is not just a hobby, it’s almost like a job. There are going to be times that they might not want to go to prac-

tice or might not want to travel that weekend, but being part of a team is being a part of something that’s a whole lot bigger than themselves,” Honaker said. “For the most part, it’s getting everybody on the same page. If we figure out how to do everything we need to do as a team then we are going to be a heck of a lot better.” Honaker added that she wants to take the winning season the Hardrockers had in 2006, use it as a stepping stone for even better things to come. “I think the girls got a taste of what it’s like to be a winning team. In the past few years they knew they weren’t looked upon as a big threat from other teams in the conference. That’s going to change --- actually I think it already has,” Honaker said. “Looking over the past 15 plus years, there has been a tradition at the School of Mines for volleyball. (The Hardrockers) were the top of the conference and they were competing with (the likes of) Dickinson State and the University of Mary. My big thing is to somehow tap back into that tradition and bring it back. I think we have the caliber of players now and we are getting the caliber of players so that we could be back up there.”
Luciana Camargo
The South Dakota School of Mines volleyball program and Lady Hardrocker head coach Beth Honaker are pleased to announce the addition of Luciana Camargo to the coaching staff. Camargo is a familiar name to volleyball fans in Rapid City, spending the last five years just down the road at National American University --- as a player and an assistant coach. Camargo graduated from NAU in the spring of 2007 with an Applied Management degree. As an outside hitter for the Mavericks, Camargo was a starter for the team from 2002-05. She was also apart of the program in 2006 as an assistant coach. Camargo grew up in San Paulo, Brazil, finishing high school in 2000. It was there that she learned her volleyball skills. But it wasn’t until she came to Rapid City that she was able to play the sport in an organized fashion. During her college playing career, Camargo was named an NAIA All American four consecutive years as well as earned All Region honors all four years she was competing (Region III). And 2006 offered Camargo a chance to experience volleyball from a whole new prospective, helping coach at NAU

and bringing the Mavericks another national championship. “I helped a lot with player workouts and recruiting,” Camargo said. “I was able to bring in three players that are on the team now --- good players. I also did other duties that an assistant has to attend to.” Now a part of the program, Hardrocker Camargo hopes to project her love and talent for the game onto a new generation of volleyball players. “I really like the game,” Camargo said. “I can’t play anymore, but (coaching) is something I am excited to do. I get a chance to assist coach (Honaker) and hopefully I get a chance to pass some of my experience on to the (SDSMT) players. I am excited to be here.”

2007 season outlook
By Brad Blume • Sports Information Director • South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY --- After posting a 16-18 overall record last season and making a trip to the conference tournament after a four year hiatus, the South Dakota School of Mines women’s volleyball team has the full force of its team back and look to improve as they are set to begin the 2007 campaign. After finishing fifth in the Dakota Athletic Conference standings in 2006, the Lady Hardrockers faced Valley City State in the DAC tournament where they were defeated. With the 2007 year set to begin, the conference has released the preseason polls where SDM found themselves in fifth place. “It was right where we ended last year,” said first year Hardrocker coach Beth Honaker. Dickinson State once again is predicted to win the conference title while Jamestown College was picked second, Valley City State placed third in the balloting, followed by Black Hills State, South Dakota Mines, Mayville State, Minot State and Dakota State. Where a lot of coaches don’t put a lot of stock in preseason polls, Honaker has a different opinion on the matter. “It is a big deal to me,” Honaker said of the polls. “I kind of thought that (other teams) would take us a little bit more seriously. Granted that the four teams ahead of us are legitimate, but I think teams two through five (in the poll) are very interchangeable. On any given day, any of those teams can be two three, four or five.” The goal for the ‘Rockers is to get back to the DAC tournament and make a run toward the tournament title. With the format set up different for the Region III tournament, every match becomes that much more important and success in the postseason is a necessity. The NAIA has changed the format where the conference tourney champion from the DAC and the conference tourney champs from the Great Plains Conference along with four atlarge bids (based on Region III rankings) will compete at the Region III tournament. “Now in order to get to regionals, we have to win our conference. The girls know what that’s going to take,” Honaker said. “It will take beating a team that has been undefeated in our conference for five plus years (Dickinson).” With the loss of only two girls from last year’s squad, the Hardrockers appear up for the job. The team lost senior reserve Deborah Carlson and Polish standout Agnieska Koperek (would have been a senior but did not return to team). The loss of Koperek was of some significance as she was the team’s leading point getter in 2006 and ended the season with 331 kills. She also earned a DAC Player of the Week honor and was named to the DAC All Conference second team as an outside hitter. “Aga is a big loss for us. She terminated a lot of balls for us and that is something that we struggled with over the past few years.” Honaker said she has found a replacement for Koperek, who may be just as good at the outside position, if not better. Ashley Kauffman, a junior transfer from Northeastern Junior
College in Sterling, Colo. “Ashley has come in, and by far, is a good replacement for Aga,” Honaker said. “Ashley has things that Aga didn’t have. Ashley has height and she is a much bigger blocker and a much bigger presence in the front row. “There will be times when we will have to lean on her to put balls away, like Aga would have done, but there is no doubt that Ashley can handle that load as well.” In Kauffman's two-year career at NJC, she totaled 498 kills and 174 blocks. She was also a very strong back row player with 321 digs. The Hardrockers also have a number of returning players that are skilled at their respective positions and should be able to do some damage against opposing teams. Senior Jennie Malone, Rapid City, S.D., (MH, 5-foot-10-inches) has been with the ‘Rockers since she was a freshman. She has a ton of experience to draw from and will be looked to on the court to be a floor general. Malone has a lot to offer in 2007 after having good numbers in 2006 tallying 277 kills. “Jennie Malone just kind of has a built in leadership. These girls have been following her since her sophomore year when she was second team all conference,” Honaker said. “She has earned trust with the girls and proved time and again that she can get us out of difficult situations.” Another catalyst for the team is libero Jenny Hiykel, Omaha, Neb. Standing 5-1 in the back row, Hiykel had a breakout season last year. She earned a DAC Libero of the week as well as Region III Libero honor. She led to teams in digs with 567. “Hiykel has earned respect from the girls. Her leadership role has developed over the past two years. The girls respect her and know that she goes hard every day,” Honaker said. “The team trusts her in the back row. They know that there is no one else on the team that works as hard or digs as many balls or runs the court like she does.” Add in one of the best setter that the South Dakota School of Mines has ever seen in junior Tessa Howe, and the Hardrockers have a recipe for success. Howe, Omaha, Neb., returns after a phenomenal 2006 showing. She too has a DAC All-Conference second team selection as a setter, along with a couple DAC Setter of the Week awards, a Region III Setter of the Week honor and is high on the list for several SDM setter records. “Tessa has the potential to be the best setter, not only in School of Mines history, but also has a good chance at being the best setter in our conference,” Honaker said. “She’s 5-foot7-inches tall, but she doesn’t play like she is. Other teams that overlook her and decide to go after her in the front row are going to regret it.” Honaker said Howe has the ability to read defenses quickly and react just as quick to get the ball into scoring positions. The Hardrockers have a number returning players that have another year under their belts that should step up and contribute this year as well. Sophomore Katherine Hanson (6-1, MH from Sioux Falls, S.D.), impressed as a freshman, and after recording 272 kills a year ago, is expected to have an even better 2007 season.
