HARDROCKER BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK

Hardrockers returns experience, talent for 2006-07 campaign By Brad Blume Sports Information Director To be a successful basketball program, one of the crucial ingredients is to have experienced and talented players that can lead the team and show them how to win. The 2006-07 South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers have that in spades. Mines rosters five seniors --- all playing together a year ago --- and all have started at different times throughout last season. Tack on a NCAA Division I transfer from North Dakota State and the lineup is that much more solidified as the season gets set to start. “With having five seniors and a pretty big transfer (student), we definitely want to finish in the top half of the conference and then have a chance to win the (DAC) tournament and go on and get to the national tournament,” said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry (in his second season at the helm). “Our feeling right now, with our seniors, is they’ve done what we’ve asked them to do, in the postseason, preseason and spring --- now it’s just a matter of getting out there and trying to get it done.” Losing three key contributors in Tom Schmitz, Samir Adams and Dave Lainhart will slow the ‘Rockers transition. But Adams missed the second half of last season, giving others down the roster a chance to get some minutes. Lainhart, who was set to return to the team as a starting guard, decide to seek an employment opportunity this past August which opened another spot on the roster. But with the quality of players that are back, Henry should have little trouble finding replacements. This year’s seniors are: Casey Schmitz (6-foot-7 post ) from Williston, N.D., Matt Lyndoe (6-6, forward ) from Custer, S.D., Blake Tideman (6-2, guard) from Winner, S.D., Brandon Lord (6-4, guard) out of Taylorsville, Utah, and Brandon Fredrickson (6-7, guard) from Ft. Collins, Colo. Schmitz was a Dakota Athletic Conference secondteam selection last year leading the team in scoring (fourth in the DAC) with 459 total points, averaging 15.8 a game. “He’s going to have an opportunity to go away from the basket a little bit more this year but we will still do everything we can to get him (looks) around the basket. He was one of the top players in the league last year,” Henry said. Lyndoe is another threat underneath who is on pace to break 1,000 points this season. Last year he averaged 12 points a game and pulled down 4.8 rebounds.

“He brings a different dimension,” Henry said of Lyndoe. “He can (defend) about every position from the post to the point guard. Offensively he is just strong with the ball and finishes the 15-footers and gets to the basket.” Tideman saw some quality minutes last season, starting at different times throughout the year. Henry said his game has improved a lot in a year’s time and should be quite an impact player this time around for the Hardrockers. “He’s getting to be more consistent, especially shooting wise, but just decision wise too,” Henry said. “He has the opportunity to have a breakout year for us. He has a lot of confidence right now and we are expecting big things out of him.” Tideman averaged 5.4 points a game in 2005-06 and two rebounds each game. 4

HARDROCKER BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK

No. 2 position where he can score a lot of points. Henry describes him as an athletic kid that can get the job done. That leaves “Big” John Madsen. Madsen is a freshman from Parker, Colo., who stands 6-10. He doesn’t have a lot of mass and according to Henry, is not a “back to the basket” type of player. But he is still is a threat with his touch from the outside. “This is probably one of the deeper teams we’ve had,” Henry said of the lineup. “Being with the academics that we have and just our situations --- typically we don’t get a ton of kids to be as deep as we are. This year I think we have 11 to 12 guys that can help us at basically every spot.” And with the up-tempo format that Henry wants to install, the more guys the better. “We are going to play a style where you have to use more guys --- picking up opponents 90 feet from the basket,” the coach said. “We are going to be doing some pressing, but not necessarily trying to get the game going a lot faster, but instead extending the floor. You have to use more guys.” The Hardrockers looked to be very balanced. With Brown and Schmitz drawing attention in the paint, that might free up the perimeter players like Fredrickson, Lyndoe and Lord to attack from the outside --- and vise versa. Looking at the conference, Henry feels that Mayville State seems to be the top of the class. The Comets have been to the NAIA tournament for the last two years and retain a few key players from last year’s squad, not to mention a good crop of recruits. “That’s the team to beat right now,” Henry added. After that, who’s to say? “Our conference is pretty balanced,” Henry said.

Lord also had a productive season last year. His 12 points and seven rebounds each game really gave the Hardrockers a sense of balance both offensively as well as on defense. “He is a consistent guy that got us 12 points a game and seven rebounds --- from the guard position,” Henry said. “He is pretty aggressive and just really ‘basketball savvy’ and that helps us big time --- making plays that other guys aren’t capable of.” Fredrickson transferred into SDSMT last year and adds a certain element to the mix. His height may be deceptive. Standing 6-7, one might think he is strictly an inside player, but Fredrickson is a lot more comfortable squaring up from the outside and sinking shots. He averaged 8.6 points last year and probably has the best accuracy on this year’s team. “He’s a guy that can shoot the ball from anywhere. He is just a little streaky at times,” Henry said. “If we can get him more consistent in shooting the ball, he is probably the best spot-up guy we have on the team.” Throw in Brown and the ‘Rockers look pretty intimidating. Playing for the Bison last season, Brown saw some quality minutes and earned valuable experience. “Anytime you can get a guy that is 6-8, 250 pounds that can run and jump and play at his skill level --- you got a good chance to do some good things,” Henry said. “He is so aggressive rebounding wise.” The coach added that Brown will be able to get a lot of second-chance opportunities that may get him or even his teammates some extra points. “We do a lot of four-out stuff where we have four perimeter guys and then a guy inside,” Henry said. “Now with (Brown) as well as Casey (underneath), it’s an opportunity to run three on the perimeter and two guys inside.” The list of players goes much deeper. Also returning to the Mines team from last year is Brandon Smith (6-8, sophomore, forward) and Jace Sullivan (6-3, sophomore, guard). Smith stepped up last year when Adams got hurt. Smith had a few big games and was able to build some confidence that Henry said has spilled over to this season. Sullivan, who was the backup point guard behind Lainhart last year, has suddenly been promoted and Henry feels good about his abilities. Don DeGooyer (6-6, sophomore, forward), from Great Falls, Mont., was the Montana 5A Player of the Year, redshirted last year and is ready to contribute. Henry said he is aggressive and can shoot the ball which could create some matchup problems for opposing teams. Robbie Fedor (6-1, freshman, guard) was an all state player out of Monticello, Minn. He is used to playing the

HEAD COACH

JASON HENRY Coach Henry, a native of Minot, ND, enters his second season as the Hardrockers' head coach. Before being promoted, Henry served as an assistant at South Dakota School of Mines for three years where he coordinated the team’s recruiting efforts and helped in all aspects of the program. He played high school basketball at Minot Bishop Ryan and college ball at Minot State, where he graduated in 1997 with a degree in physical education as well as corporate fitness. Henry went on to receive his Master's degree in education from North Dakota State University. Henry’s coaching career began as an assistant at Minot Bishop Ryan in 1994. He continued as an assistant with stops at West Fargo, ND, and Minot State. He then served as head boys' and girls' coach at PBK High School (Pingree, Buchanan, and Kensal) in ND, and two seasons as head boys' coach at Washburn, ND. The following season Henry then returned to the college level with a two-year stop at the North Dakota School of Science, a junior college in Wahpeton, as an assistant. During his last year there in 2002, the team finished with a 31-2 mark and set 14 school records. He coached Team North Dakota during the summers of 1999-2002 which traveled to Australia and Hawaii to compete in international play. Along with his coaching duties over the years, Henry has taught business and physical education classes at the high school and college level. “I look forward to building my relationships with the people on campus and in the Rapid City area,” said Henry. “Mines is a wonderful place to coach and Rapid City is a beautiful place to live. I have been blessed to have worked with a number of Hall of Fame coaches and learned so much from Coach Welsh the last few years. I am anxious to implement my style of play along with the styles that have become part of me from the people I have worked with in the past. With an up-tempo style offense and pressure defense, we hope to have some very exciting basketball in the future. We have been able to get some of the top student/athletes around the area because of the excellent academic background at Mines. I plan on continuing to bring in these top-notch student - athletes and build upon the foundation that Coach Welsh and SD Tech has built. I hope the community will continue to become more a part of SD Mines and appreciate the student/athletes that represent the school and community so well.” Henry is married to Anne who is a dental hygienist in Rapid City and has a new daughter Gretchen.
