South Dakota School of Mines President: Robert Wharton Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as Provost and Vice President for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society. Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council's Polar Research Board.

SCHOOL OF MINES Welcome to the King Center and Goodell Gymnasium, home of the Hardrockers. The facilities recently had a facelift as the women's basketball, men's basketball and women's volleyball teams all got upgrades to the locker room areas. The locker rooms are all state-of-the-art to go along with an excellent gym that seats approximately 2,000 fans, plus there is a top-of-the-line fitness center and an indoor pool for use as well.

Head Coach's Bio Barb Felderman enters her 28th season as Lady Hardrocker basketball coach. She has guided teams to berths in the NAIA National Tournament in eight of the last 14 years, including appearances in The Final Four in 1998 and 1999. Felderman has coached Mines to a 412- 325 overall record, and to a team record 28 wins during the 1997-98 season. She has coached seven SDIC Championship teams and added a DAC titles in 2002 and 2005.

A native of Doland, SD, and a graduate of Northern State University, Felderman spent eight years coaching and teaching at Kadoka and Pierre High Schools. She served as head softball coach at Ball State prior to coming to SD School of Mines in 1981. She was the Hardrocker volleyball coach until 1993 and won seven SDIC titles. While earning her Masters at the University of Wyoming, Felderman served as assistant basketball and softball coach. Barb and her Lady Hardrocker basketball team have held numerous clinics and camps to teach young boys and girls the fundamentals of basketball and teach them the true spirit of competition. Felderman was honored as South Dakota College Coach-of-theYear by sportswriters in 1991 and 1998 and has been named SDIC Basketball Coach-of-the Year three times. The Lady Hardrockers have been named South Dakota Women's College team of the year on two occasions by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.

Assistant Coach's Bio Lori Coble has been a valuable member of the Hardrocker athletic program for the last 26 years as the women's assistant basketball coach. Her dedication to the Lady Hardrocker teams and helpful coaching insights have been a big part of Mines' success over the years. A native of Presho, SD, Coble graduated from Dakota State where she played four years for the Lady Trojans and was recently inducted into the DSU athletic Hall of Fame. She coached at Plankinton for one season before moving to Rapid City. Coble is a member of the SDSM&T faculty as a biology instructor.

Assistant Coach's Bio Maria (Possum) Caldwallader returns to the School of Mines as an assistant coach for the Lady Hardrocker basketball program. A 1996 Mines graduate in industrial engineering, Maria brings a wealth of experience as a former Lady Hardrocker player along with her knowledge of the game. She was the point guard and leader of the Hardrockers' first ever NAIA National Tournament team in 1994. She achieved NAIA Honorable Mention All-American status, was the SDIC Conference Most Valuable Player her senior year and holds school records for assists in a season (217) and in a game (19). Following graduation, Maria worked in the construction divisions as District Sales Manager for Ingersoll Rand (1996-2000) and as a Sales Manager for Herc-U-Lift, Inc (2000-2005). Maria and husband Ryan, (a 1996 Mines civil engineering graduate and former football player), relocated to Rapid City from Minneapolis with their five-year-old son Jakob and have since added a little girl named Brooke.

Rachel Janzen is no stranger to NAIA women's basketball having played four years herself for Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla. Janzen graduated in December of 2007 with a degree in Kinesiology along with a minor in coaching and received the academic honor of Magna Cum Laude. After graduating, Janzen became an assistant varsity hoops coach and head junior varsity coach at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City, Okla., for one season. She's also furthered her coaching skills interning for Southern Nazarene University athletic department, assisting the athletics director, marketing camps and coaching teams. As an assistant coach, Janzen will focus a lot of her efforts on recruitment. "With her knowledge and enthusiasm, Rachel is a great addition to Lady Hardrocker basketball," Felderman added.

Athletic Trainers' Bios Scott Baird is a 1997 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and is in his third year as head athletic trainer at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both men's rugby and lacrosse. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a Physical Therapist in Rapid City, for 14 years.

Jennifer Ranum serves as the assistant athletic trainer for all the Hardrocker athletic teams. She graduated in May of 2007 from National American University with degrees in Athletic Training and Applied Management, and became certified in September of 2007. She is a member of both the National Athletic Trainer's Association and the Mid America Athletic Trainer's Association since 2004. Prior to her undergraduate graduation, Jen spent three years at the School of Mines doing outreach as a student athletic trainer and upon graduation was hired full time. Jen is now in her third year as assistant athletic trainer and intramural director.

Athletic Administration The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is pleased to announce the hiring of Richard (Dick) A. Kaiser as the university's new athletics director (AD). Kaiser earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Colorado, a master's in educational administration from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in athletic leadership and administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his postdoctorate in health education and administration at Oregon State University.

For the past 10 years, Kaiser has served as the AD for Defiance College. Previously, he served as AD at Olivet College, Western Oregon University and Willamette University. He has received a number of honors and awards from athletics organizations such as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and others. Kaiser will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with all NAIA, conference and university rules and regulations. The School of Mines is a member of the NAIA and the Dakota Athletic Conference with 10 programs competing in women's volleyball and men's football, as well as women's and men's teams in golf, cross country, track and field and basketball. Kaiser has two grown children, Cassie and Ryan; one grandson, Jack; and new twin grandsons, Carson and Caden.

Lori Hodgin has been the SD School of Mines athletic department administrative assistant for almost 20 years. Her duties have included: working with athletic eligibility, game-day administration and hiring students to assist in game management.

She is also involved in department purchasing and making sure that everything runs smooth in the athletic office on a day-to-day basis. Lori has lived in Rapid City most of her life, but was born in Los Angeles, Calif. She has a son Greg who is currently employed by the Hardrocker football program as an assistant coach. She is a huge animal lover, donating her time to the Humane Society and on occasion has adopted dogs from there as well.

Lady Rotiers Have Good Mix of Talent By Brad Blume Sports Information Director South Dakota School of Mines RAPID CITY â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team begins the 2009-10 season a little different from the previous few. This year the Lady Hardrockers actually have a healthy mix of seasoned players to go along with a talented younger group which could prove to be a good recipe for success. "It's nice to have some upperclassmen," said Lady Hardrocker head women's basketball coach Barb Felderman. "There was a year there that we didn't have any seniors, so it's nice to have some of those veteran players that know the system and are good teachers to our younger players." The 'Rockers have three seniors this year in Bethany Holyoak, Leah Sundby and Natasha Begay and a solid group of juniors including: Stephany Bjustrom, Jerika Ihnen and Whitney Ashford. These six upperclassmen have spent some quality minutes on the court and know how to run Felderman's system. They will be looked at to teach the younger hoopsters and lead the team where they want to go. Add in sophomores Arial Granillo and Maria Luze and the SD Mines women's team has a solid returning lineup. "There is still a learning curve. The transition for those younger players is hard," Felderman said. "There is just so much difference between the high school level and college level â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in every aspect. But once they get a few games under their belts, hopefully it will start to fall into place. The newcomers on the team this year are Silke Forstmann, a junior transfer from Northeast Junior College in Colorado; Amanda Willmore, a sophomore who was an all state player from Wyoming, Shalane Hampp, a sophomore transfer from Pikesville College in Kentucky; Alex Mader, a freshman from Miles City, Mont.; and Hillary Hawkins, a freshman from Elizabeth, Colo. "I think our young players will contribute a lot, but there is still that period of adjustment," Felderman added. Holyoak, a 6-foot-l-inch post player from Moorcroft, Wyo., is the Hardrockers top returner. She led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocking in 2008-09, averaging 14.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Holyoak was a Dakota Athletic Conference First Team selection, was the DAC's top blocker with 45 last season and has scored over 1,000 points as a Hardrocker in just three years. Begay, a 5-7 guard from Page, Ariz., was new to the team last year and was used in a supporting role. Felderman said Begay has quick hands, is good on defense and is a great perimeter shooter. Her time on the court should go up this season. Sundby, a 5-11 forward from Williston, N.D., has been with the Lady 'Rockers since she was a freshman and her roles have changed and developed in that span. Felderman said Sundby is capable of being one of the team's top contributors. She has an excellent outside shot, has a variety of post moves, is very strong and can jump out of the gym.

lady Rockers Have Good Mix of Talent Ihnen, a 5-10 forward/post from Tea, S.D., plays the game with a lot of heart according to Felderman and is a huge leader, emotionally and physically, for the Hardrockers. She has a good knowledge of the Lady Hardrockers' philosophies this year and is expected to do some big things for SDM. Last year Ihnen averaged 10 points a game and was the second leading blocker in the conference (38) behind her teammate Holyoak. Bjustrom was sidelined for the first part of last year due to surgery, but Felderman said she is looking for the 5-7 guard from Algona, Iowa, to step up her game this season. She is a great defender and also has touch from the outside. Last year she averaged just under six points a game. Ashford, a 5-7 guard from Littleton, Colo., is also a good shooter from long range and will certainly provide depth to the Lady Hardrockers' roster. Granillo played in almost every game last season in the point-guard spot. This year she will be looked at again to take charge of the 'Rocker offense but Felderman said Granillo can play a couple spots and should be in a dual role all year. Last season Granillo put up 8.6 points a game. Luze, a 5-8 guard, also provided some quality minutes last season. The head coach said the Brookings, S.D.,

native really picked up her game toward the end of last year and hopes that momentum will carry

over as the 2009-10 season gets underway. Forstmann, a 6-4 post, from Wieslich, Germany, adds a new dimension to the SDM lineup. She has a nice outside shot and runs the court well for a tall girl â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and with her height, Forstmann may make opponents a little leery about coming into the paint. Willmore is a 5-5 guard from Rock Springs, Wyo., who Felderman says is really quick, a good passer, can penetrate and is a good three-point shooter. Hampp, a 5-4 guard from Duncan Falls, Ohio, is a carbon copy of Willmore with her speed, ball handling ability as well as shot selection and should do good things for the Hardrockers this year. Mader is pulling double duty and won't join the basketball team until the 2009 volleyball season concludes in mid-November. Felderman said the 5-7 guard from Mile City, Mont., comes from a successful high school program and that Mader has good penetration skills and is a very athletic player. Hawkins, a 5-7 guard from Elizabeth, Colo., will be looked at to contribute right away. She has a knack for rebounding and can play either inside or outside. Hawkins has an excellent perimeter shot and according to Felderman is the complete package. "The biggest challenge will be blending the newcomers with the nucleus that we have," Felderman said. "We just need time together and we are getting better every week of practice. We have a very tough schedule again this season." The Lady Hardrockers have had difficulty filling a full lineup the past couple years, making things stressful for the players on the court, but with more numbers on the roster this year and more

Lady Roefcers Have Good Mix of T alent opportunities to rotate players in and out, the Hardrockers should be able to do things during games to give them the advantage. "We have more depth and we should be able to establish more pressure with our guards and we will have more outside shooting ability which was a weakness last year/' Felderman said. The main area of concern for the Hardrockers is the same as it has been for the past few seasons â&#x20AC;&#x201D; rebounding. SD Mines finished sixth in the DAC a year ago, averaging almost 38 rebounds per contest. "That's been an Achilles' heel the last couple of years and it's been kind of a mental thing," Felderman said. "We need to develop that mind set and fix that aspect of our game." Looking at the conference, the DAC is probably one of the most difficult in the NAIA. Felderman said it is impossible to predict how each team will finish because the league holds so much parody. "It's tough as usual," the coach said. Jamestown College returns most of their starters and Black Hills State is thought to be very athletic with a lot of seasoned veterans as well. Dickinson State has lots of depth on its squad and can execute its offense to perfection. Minot State and Valley City are traditionally always tough and Felderman feels that won't change this year. Dakota State is the only mystery with a completely brand new lineup. "I think it will come down to the very end in regards to who comes out on top," Felderman said of the DAC.

Last season the Hardrockers finished with a 10-19 overall record and were 6-8 in conference play, finishing fifth in the DAC standings. Felderman is hoping to improve on that and get her team back to the top of the conference as well as the NAIA. "We have such a rich tradition here at the School of Mines. We want to get back on track with that," Felderman said referring to her teams' 13 visits to the NAIA national tournament. "But it all goes back to the old cliche of just one game at a time. It's going to be hard because of our schedule and the teams in the area that we play." The Hardrockers schedule has them playing some of last year's top tier teams so Felderman will be able to gauge her squad early and see where they are and what adjustments need to be made. "We should grow each game we play. It's really tough (at SD School of Mines) because our kids have to think a lot about academics," Felderman said. "Our schedule this year may make things a little easier because we aren't on the road a lot as we've been in the past. We are hoping that gives us a little bright spot."
