Welcome to the King Center and Goodell Gymnasium, home of the Hardrockers. The facilities recently had a facelift as the women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s football teams all got upgrades to the locker room area. The football team is housed at O’Harra Stadium, while the other sports recently had their current facilities modified. The locker rooms are all state of the art with an excellent gym that seats approximately 3,000. There is a top of the line fitness center and an indoor pool for use as well.


Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D. President of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

Robert A. Wharton, Ph.D., became president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July 1, 2008. Previously, he served as the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Idaho State University (ISU). Wharton was a tenured professor of biology at ISU and previously served as its chief research officer. His Ph.D. in botany is from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He also holds a M.A. degree in biology and a B.A. in botany from Humboldt State University in California. Dr. Wharton is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Explorers Club, and the Royal Geographic Society. Wharton is a recipient of the United States Antarctic Service Medal and has served on the National Research Council’s Polar Research Board.


Athletics Director

Dr. Dick Kaiser earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Colorado, a master's degree in educational administration from South Dakota State University, and a doctorate of education in athletic leadership and administration from Brigham Young University. He completed his post-doctorate in health education and administration at Oregon State University. Kaiser is in his second year at South Dakota School of Mines. Previously, Kaiser served as the AD for Defiance College, Western Oregon University and Willamette University. He has received a number of honors and awards, including Athletic Director of the year, from athletic organizations such as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) along with others. As AD, Kaiser is responsible for leading the athletics program through all phases of development and fostering an environment of quality instruction and high scholarly and athletic achievement. He also plays a key role in athletic fundraising and continuing to build and maintain relationships with boosters and community leaders. He oversees all operations in the athletic department, including intercollegiate athletic sports; recruitment, selection, development, and retention of coaches and staff; health of student-athletes; and leadership and management of daily operations. During the first year of the job, Kaiser led the university process of applying for membership into the ranks of NCAA Div. II. The school was accepted in July, 2010 and now will begin the three-year program of going full NCAA membership for the 2013-14 season. Kaiser has two grown children, Cassie and Ryan; one grandson, Jack; twin grandsons Carson and Caden and one granddaughter Lucy.

The city of 65,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destination because of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions. There are caves, mountains, streams, and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. FY09 Research Funding School of Mines faculty members and researchers received awards totaling nearly $34 million during the 2010 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the State of South Dakota, NASA, the Department of Transportation, Army Research Laboratory, and many more.

Barb Felderman enters her 29th season as Lady Hardrocker basketball coach. She has guided teams to berths in the NAIA National Tournament 11 times, including appearances in the Final Four in 1998 and 1999. Felderman has coached Mines to a 434-361 (at start of 10-11 season) overall record, and to a team record 28 wins during the 1997-98 season. She has coached seven SDIC Championship teams and added DAC conference titles in 2002 and 2005. A native of Doland, SD, and a graduate of Northern State University, Felderman spent eight years coaching and teaching at Kadoka and Pierre High Schools. She served as head softball coach at Ball State prior to coming to SD Mines in 1981. She was the Hardrocker volleyball coach until 1993 and won seven SDIC titles. While earning her Masters at the University of Wyoming, Felderman served as assistant basketball and softball coach. Barb and her Lady Hardrocker basketball teams have held numerous clinics and camps to teach young boys and girls the fundamentals of basketball and teach them the true spirit of competition. Felderman was honored as South Dakota College Coach-of-theYear by sportswriters in 1991 and 1998 and has been named SDIC Basketball Coach-of-the Year three times. The Lady Hardrockers have been named South Dakota Women's College team of the year on two occasions by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.

Lori Coble has been a valuable member of the Hardrocker athletic program for the last 27 years as the women’s assistant basketball coach. Her dedication to the Lady Hardrocker teams and helpful coaching insights have been a big part of SD Mines success over the years. A native of Presho, SD, Coble graduated from Dakota State where she played four years for the Lady Trojans and was recently inducted into the DSU athletic Hall of Fame. She coached at Plankinton for one season before moving to Rapid City. Coble is a member of the SDSM&T faculty as a biology instructor.

Maria (Fossum) Caldwallader returns to the School of Mines as an assistant coach for the Lady Hardrocker basketball program. A 1996 Mines graduate in Industrial Engineering, Maria brings a wealth of experience as a former Lady Hardrocker player along with her knowledge of the game. She was the point guard and leader of the Hardrockers’ first ever NAIA National Tournament team in 1994. She achieved NAIA All American Honorable Mention status, was the SDIC Conference Most Valuable Player her senior year and holds school records for assists in a season (217) and in a game (19). Following graduation, Maria worked in the construction divisions as District Sales Manager for Ingersoll Rand (1996-2000) and as a Sales Manager for Herc-U-Lift, Inc (2000-2005). Maria and husband Ryan, (a 1996 Mines Civil Engineering graduate and former football player with receiving records at Mines), relocated to Rapid City from Minnesota. They have son (Jakob) and girl (Brooke).

Rachel Janzen is no stranger to NAIA women’s basketball, playing four years herself for the Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla. Janzen graduated in December of 2007 with a degree in Kinesiology along with a minor in coaching and received the graduating honor of Magna Cum Laude. After graduating, Janzen became an assistant varsity hoops coach and head junior varsity coach at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City, Okla., for one season. She’s also furthered her coaching skills interning for Southern Nazarene University athletic department, assisting the athletics director, marketing camps and coaching teams. As an assistant coach, Janzen will focus a lot of her efforts on recruitment. “With her knowledge and enthusiasm we know she will be a great addition to Lady Hardrocker basketball,” Coach Felderman said.


Lady Hardrockers’ Training Staff

Scott Baird is a 1997 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and is in his fourth year as head athletic trainer at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Before joining the School of Mines Athletic Department, he was an athletic trainer for the University of Wyoming where he covered both men’s rugby and lacrosse. He brings much knowledge and experience to the School of Mines Sports Medicine Team. Scott has been married to Becky, a Physical Therapist in Rapid City, for 14 years and has two twin newborn girls Braedyn and Blakely.

Jennifer Ranum is athletic trainer for the Lady Hardrocker volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams. She graduated in May of 2007 from National American University with degrees in Athletic Training and Applied Management. Jen became certified in September of 2007. She is a member of both the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and the Mid America Athletic Trainer’s Association since 2004. Jen was promoted to Compliance Officer in the summer of 2010 and will take the lead making sure all rules and regulations are followed during SD Mines transition to NCAA Div. II status.


The Voices of the Hardrockers

Public Address Announcer Kevin Phillips has the longest running morning radio show in the Black Hills. Phillips has been announcing ball games since 1980 and has been on the radio since 1982. He's a member of the Rapid City Sports Hall Of Fame and a Black Hills Advertising Federation Silver Medal Winner, which is like the advertising Hall Of Fame. He can be heard on Magic 93.9 weekday mornings from 5:30-10am and on 97.5 The Hills from 2-5pm.

Tom Rudebusch and Tom Mahon broadcast the Hardrocker basketball action every game at home or on the road on 97.5 FM the Hills and 920AM. The duo has extensive knowledge and insight about the game of basketball. Tom Rudebusch has been the voice of the Hardrockers for over 30 years and Tom Mahon is a former Lady Hardrocker basketball coach.
