Golden Eagle Quick Hits Record-Setting Performance The Golden Eagles had quite an impressive match against Augustana College last Saturday, or more specifically an impressive first set against the Vikings. The Golden Eagles battled back down 10 set points to Augustana to defeat the Vikings 37-35. The 37 points in a set was an NCAA Division II record for most points during a set in the 25-point scoring era. In addition, the Golden Eagles scored 87 points overall which set the school mark for most points in a three-set match during the 25-point scoring era. The previous record for most points in a set was 35 points, which was tied by Augustana in the first set. Four teams had previously accomplished 35 points, it was most recently accomplished by Washburn University against Emporia State University Nov. 12, 2011. The previous record for most points in a three-set match was 86 set by Hillsdale College against Michigan Tech University Nov. 7, 2010. NSIC Player of the Week University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball player Chelsea Wiesner (Sr., Lib., Rochester, Minn./ Health Science) was selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Defensive Player of the Week for her oustanding performance on the weekend in a split against Augustana College and 18th-ranked Wayne State College (Neb.). Wiesner averaged 6.43 digs per set against Augustana and No. 18 Wayne State on the weekend. She had 29 digs in a crucial 3-0 victory over Augustana Saturday. The libero averaged an astounding 9.67 digs per set in the win Saturday over the Vikings. She had 16 digs alone in a 37-35 set one victory including several highlight-reel digs. Wiesner had 16 digs in Friday’s 3-1 loss to Wayne State. Crucial Stretch The Golden Eagles have a crucial stretch ahead of them over the final four matches of the regular-season. UMC is currently 8-8 in the league and alone in seventh place overall. The Golden Eagles are currently behind Augustana College and Wayne State College, who are tied in fifth place with a mark of 10-6 while four teams sit one game behind UMC with 7-9 records. The Golden Eagles are hoping for at least a 2-2 mark overall in their final four matches of the regular season against Minnesota State, Concordia-St. Paul, Winona State and Upper Iowa. The top eight teams advance to the NSIC/US Bank Tournament, which commences Wed., Nov. 20. If the season ended today, the Golden Eagles would be the seventh seed playing at second seed University of Minnesota Duluth. Looker On Fire Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.) has played the best volleyball of her career over the last six matches as she has helped the Golden Eagles to winning seven of the last 10 matches. Looker is averaging 4.86 kills per set in the last six matches including 20-kill performances against University of Mary and Wayne State College. Looker had 19 kills and 22 digs in the record-setting performance against Augustana College. She had a double-double in the first set alone, which was remarkable, as she had 11 kills and 10 digs against the Vikings. Looker comes into the weekend averaging 3.93 kills per set, which ranks fifth in the league. In conference play, she has averaged 4.02 kills per set, which ranks fourth in the NSIC

Head Coach Lee Anderson Coach Lee Anderson has been with the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball program since 2007 and is entering his 12th season as a head coach at the collegiate level. In those five seasons at the helm of UMC, Anderson has helped the UMC Volleyball program make great strides. In 2011, Anderson took a team that was winless with an 0-28 record and guided them to a record of 12-18, the best an Anderson-coached team has had at UMC. A highlight of the 2011 season was defeating Minnesota State University, Mankato, a team that was ranked 13th in the nation at the time. The Golden Eagles finished 11th in the league with a young squad. The next season, the Golden Eagles put together another solid season with an 11-16 (7-13 NSIC) mark as they again finished 11th in the league. The Golden Eagles will look to improve on the last two seasons as they return five-of-six starters and have six seniors on the 2013 squad. Prior to his appointment at UMC, Anderson served as the head volleyball coach at Glenville State College in Glenville, W.V. for two seasons (2005-06). In 2005, the Pioneers had a record of 3-28. Anderson turned the 2006 season around, finishing with a record of 10-17. The team set a new school record for conference wins in a season. The team also had one player named 2nd team All-Conference, one named Honorable Mention and three freshmen made the All-Freshmen team. “We are excited to have Lee join the UMC athletics staff and campus community, says Athletics Director Stephanie Helgeson. “His enthusiasm and experience will be a tremendous fit for our volleyball program. We are very impressed by the passion and commitment Lee brings to our athletic program and Golden Eagle Volleyball.” A native of Renfrew (Ontario), Canada, Anderson also served as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. During Anderson’s tenure as assistant coach, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 41-21 (.661), including a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship in 2004 and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament. He served as head coach for three seasons (2000-03) at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. At Lakehead, Anderson had a 13-38 (.342) overall record in the Ontario University Athletics East Division during his three seasons at the helm, including a fifth place finish in 2002-03. He also directed volleyball sport development camps and organized department media conferences during his tenure. In addition to his coaching duties, Anderson served as a practical instructor in the school’s Kinesiology Department. Besides his collegiate coaching experience, Anderson has also coached various midget, youth and high school teams since earning a Bachelor of Science degree in human kinetics from the University of Ottawa (Ontario) in 1998. His previous head coaching positions included Henry Wisewood High School (1999) in Calgary, Ottawa’s Immaculata High School (1995-98) along with both the Northwestern Ontario Under-18 (2002) and Under-17 (2001-02) development teams. In 2000, Anderson earned his masters degree in kinesiology with a specialization in the art and science of coaching from the University of Calgary.
