Golden Eagle Quick Hits Heading to the Tournament The UMC volleyball team will head to NSIC Tournament for the first time in the current format of the league with 16 overall teams and eight teams who advance. The Golden Eagles last played in the NSIC Tournament in 2006, where they were the No. 8 seed in a 10-team conference and lost to Wayne State 3-0 at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn. This time, the Golden Eagles were one of the top eight teams in a very deep league of 16 teams. Five of the other seven teams who made the NSIC Tournament are currently ranked. The Golden Eagles will face No. 1-seed Concordia University, St. Paul, the six-time defending National Champion, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation. Clutch The Golden Eagle volleyball team came up big last weekend as they needed to have a good weekend in order to get into the NSIC/US Bank Volleyball Tournament. The Golden Eagles came up big as they picked up a pair of victories over Winona State University and Upper Iowa University in order to earn the eighth-seed for the tournament. Winningest Team in Program History The 2013 UMC volleyball team became the winningest team in program history last Saturday with a 3-1 win over Upper Iowa University. The win helped the 2013 team surpass the 2004 team for the most wins in a season for a team in the four-year era of the school. The Golden Eagles head into the quarterfinals of the NSIC/US Bank Volleyball Tournament with a mark of 15-13 on the season. First Team All-Conference UMC outside hitter Brittany Looker (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Health Science) became just the second player in school history, along with Joan Ebnet, to be named All-NSIC First Team. Looker has been named to the All-NSIC team each of her three seasons in the Maroon and Gold. She was an All-NSIC Second Team pick as a sophomore and an All-NSIC Honorable Selection as a freshman. She is the first player in Coach Lee Anderson’s seven years to earn All-NSIC First Team honors. Looker has been a force this season at her outside hitter position, averaging 3.87 kills per set and 2.88 digs per set. Looker’s kill mark currently ranks in sixth on the season in the NSIC. She has improved by over a kill per set from last season after averaging 2.69 kills per set as a sophomore. Looker has 14 double-doubles this season and has tallied 20 or more kills on four occasions including in league play against nationally ranked Wayne State College (Neb.), University of Mary and Upper Iowa University. 1,000 Brittany Looker’s 17 kills against Upper Iowa last Saturday helped her become the fifth player in program history to eclipse 1,000 kills. Looker is currently ranked fifth all-time in kills and points at UMC now. She should continue to move up the charts at UMC as her career progresses.

Head Coach Lee Anderson Coach Lee Anderson has been with the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball program since 2007 and is entering his 12th season as a head coach at the collegiate level. In those five seasons at the helm of UMC, Anderson has helped the UMC Volleyball program make great strides. In 2011, Anderson took a team that was winless with an 0-28 record and guided them to a record of 12-18, the best an Anderson-coached team has had at UMC. A highlight of the 2011 season was defeating Minnesota State University, Mankato, a team that was ranked 13th in the nation at the time. The Golden Eagles finished 11th in the league with a young squad. The next season, the Golden Eagles put together another solid season with an 11-16 (7-13 NSIC) mark as they again finished 11th in the league. The Golden Eagles will look to improve on the last two seasons as they return five-of-six starters and have six seniors on the 2013 squad. Prior to his appointment at UMC, Anderson served as the head volleyball coach at Glenville State College in Glenville, W.V. for two seasons (2005-06). In 2005, the Pioneers had a record of 3-28. Anderson turned the 2006 season around, finishing with a record of 10-17. The team set a new school record for conference wins in a season. The team also had one player named 2nd team All-Conference, one named Honorable Mention and three freshmen made the All-Freshmen team. “We are excited to have Lee join the UMC athletics staff and campus community, says Athletics Director Stephanie Helgeson. “His enthusiasm and experience will be a tremendous fit for our volleyball program. We are very impressed by the passion and commitment Lee brings to our athletic program and Golden Eagle Volleyball.” A native of Renfrew (Ontario), Canada, Anderson also served as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. During Anderson’s tenure as assistant coach, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 41-21 (.661), including a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship in 2004 and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament. He served as head coach for three seasons (2000-03) at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. At Lakehead, Anderson had a 13-38 (.342) overall record in the Ontario University Athletics East Division during his three seasons at the helm, including a fifth place finish in 2002-03. He also directed volleyball sport development camps and organized department media conferences during his tenure. In addition to his coaching duties, Anderson served as a practical instructor in the school’s Kinesiology Department. Besides his collegiate coaching experience, Anderson has also coached various midget, youth and high school teams since earning a Bachelor of Science degree in human kinetics from the University of Ottawa (Ontario) in 1998. His previous head coaching positions included Henry Wisewood High School (1999) in Calgary, Ottawa’s Immaculata High School (1995-98) along with both the Northwestern Ontario Under-18 (2002) and Under-17 (2001-02) development teams. In 2000, Anderson earned his masters degree in kinesiology with a specialization in the art and science of coaching from the University of Calgary.
