Golden Eagle Quick Hits Filling Roles The University of Minnesota Crookston has really showed their depth over the last week. With injuries to Maggie Perrel (Fr., RS, New Germany, Minn.) and Alyssa Schneider (Sr., MH/RS, Racine, Wis.), the Golden Eagles needed several players to step up. Stephanie Pearson (So., OH, Frankfort, Ill.) was one key player who stepped up and started at outside hitter. Pearson had a career night in a win against Bemidji State as she had 11 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Against No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State, Pearson had six kills and 15 digs. UMC also looked to Alexandra Skeeter (Sr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.), who moved to right side hitter in the absence of Perrel and Schneider. Also, Erin Schwarz (Fr., MH, Eden Prairie, Minn.) had a strong match against BSU, with five kills and four blocks. Down To The Wire The Golden Eagles have put themselves in a very good position heading into the final six matches of the season after winning six of the last eight matches. UMC has crucial matches against fifthplace Augustana and sixth-place Wayne State this weekend. The Golden Eagles will then head to Minnesota State University, Mankato, who they beat earlier this year, and No. 1 Concordia University, St. Paul. The Golden Eagles will then finish out the year at home against Winona State University and Upper Iowa University. UMC is tied for seventh heading into the stretch, as the NSIC will take the top eight teams to the NSIC Tournament. VanGerpen Stepping Up Junior middle hitter Morgan VanGerpen from Overland Park, Kansas has had a strong season so far and has been an integral part of UMC’s strong play as of late. VanGerpen had 10 kills and three blocks in a big 3-0 sweep over Sioux Falls and had eight kills and six blocks against No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State. VanGerpen comes in averaging 1.82 kills per set and 0.88 blocks per set. Watch Out For Looker Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.) has been phenomenal of late for the Golden Eagles as she is averaging 4.53 kills per set in the last four matches. Looker had 20 kills against U-Mary and 18 in a big win against Sioux Falls. Looker has had a standout season in 2013, as she has taken the next leap in her career after strong freshmen and sophomore seasons. Looker is currently averaging 3.79 kills per set coming into Friday’s match. In addition, Looker continues to climb up the charts for the Golden Eagles. She needs just 11 kills to move past Katie Carlson in sixth place all-time for kills and needs just 84 kills to move over the 1,000 kill mark. In addition, Looker needs just five service aces to break into the top 10. In addition, she is ranked sixth all-time for points. Chasing 14 The Golden Eagles are two wins away from tying their program-best total of 14 wins set in 2004. UMC had 12 wins in 2011 and 11 wins in 2012.

Head Coach Lee Anderson Coach Lee Anderson has been with the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball program since 2007 and is entering his 12th season as a head coach at the collegiate level. In those five seasons at the helm of UMC, Anderson has helped the UMC Volleyball program make great strides. In 2011, Anderson took a team that was winless with an 0-28 record and guided them to a record of 12-18, the best an Anderson-coached team has had at UMC. A highlight of the 2011 season was defeating Minnesota State University, Mankato, a team that was ranked 13th in the nation at the time. The Golden Eagles finished 11th in the league with a young squad. The next season, the Golden Eagles put together another solid season with an 11-16 (7-13 NSIC) mark as they again finished 11th in the league. The Golden Eagles will look to improve on the last two seasons as they return five-of-six starters and have six seniors on the 2013 squad. Prior to his appointment at UMC, Anderson served as the head volleyball coach at Glenville State College in Glenville, W.V. for two seasons (2005-06). In 2005, the Pioneers had a record of 3-28. Anderson turned the 2006 season around, finishing with a record of 10-17. The team set a new school record for conference wins in a season. The team also had one player named 2nd team All-Conference, one named Honorable Mention and three freshmen made the All-Freshmen team. “We are excited to have Lee join the UMC athletics staff and campus community, says Athletics Director Stephanie Helgeson. “His enthusiasm and experience will be a tremendous fit for our volleyball program. We are very impressed by the passion and commitment Lee brings to our athletic program and Golden Eagle Volleyball.” A native of Renfrew (Ontario), Canada, Anderson also served as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. During Anderson’s tenure as assistant coach, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 41-21 (.661), including a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship in 2004 and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament. He served as head coach for three seasons (2000-03) at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. At Lakehead, Anderson had a 13-38 (.342) overall record in the Ontario University Athletics East Division during his three seasons at the helm, including a fifth place finish in 2002-03. He also directed volleyball sport development camps and organized department media conferences during his tenure. In addition to his coaching duties, Anderson served as a practical instructor in the school’s Kinesiology Department. Besides his collegiate coaching experience, Anderson has also coached various midget, youth and high school teams since earning a Bachelor of Science degree in human kinetics from the University of Ottawa (Ontario) in 1998. His previous head coaching positions included Henry Wisewood High School (1999) in Calgary, Ottawa’s Immaculata High School (1995-98) along with both the Northwestern Ontario Under-18 (2002) and Under-17 (2001-02) development teams. In 2000, Anderson earned his masters degree in kinesiology with a specialization in the art and science of coaching from the University of Calgary.
