Recently IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - The University of Minnesota Crookston sent shockwaves across the state of Minnesota with a convincing 99-85 win over traditional Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) stalwart St. Cloud State University Saturday at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn. The Golden Eagles connected on 13 three-pointers and shot 24-of-45 for 52.2 percent from the field and were 13-of-24 for 54.2 percent from beyond the arc. UMC was led by Tyler West, Jr. (Sr., G/F, Portland, Ore./Communications), who continued his strong play of late, with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. UMC fell to University of Minnesota Duluth 66-50 in their other game last weekend. West led the Golden Eagles with 15 points and nine rebounds. - University of Minnesota Crookston senior football player Matt Borowicz (OL, Stephen, Minn./Health Science) was selected Capital One Academic All-America® Division II First Team. Borowicz, who holds a 3.9 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in health science, was one of 24 student-athletes across all of NCAA Division II football to receive All-America first team accolades for his performance in the classroom. - University of Minnesota Crookston football player Greg Lofquist (Sr., LB, South St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) was selected to the Beyond Sports Network Division 2 Football All-Super Region 3 Second Team for his performance on the field for the 2014 season. Lofquist is now eligible to be named to the Beyond Sports Network Division 2 All-America Team. - University of Minnesota Crookston women’s soccer player Rachelle Alcini (Sr., D, Ann Arbor, Mich./Health Science) was named 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Women’s All-Central Region Third Team. - The UMC women’s basketball team has gone 1-2 in recent weeks. They fell 67-62 to St. Cloud State, led by Alexa Thielman’s (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) 18 points, while they fell to Minnesota Duluth 71-67. Thielman led the way with 19 points in the game. The Golden Eagles picked up a win over Bemidji State University Nov. 29. Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies) led the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds. She earned NSIC North Player of the Week for her performance in the 66-53 win over the Beavers.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Nov. 27 - Dec. 3
- Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., Women’s Basketball, Perham, Minn.) was chosen after a standout performance in a conference win over Bemidji State University. Moenkedick tallied 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-53 win over Bemidji State to open up the conference slate for the Golden Eagles. Moenkedick had a double-double at half-time with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She hit 7-of-14 from the field and was 7-of-11 from the charity stripe. Moenkedick also had five offensive rebounds in the game as the Golden Eagles improved to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in the NSIC. She received NSIC North Player of the Week due to her performance.
- Matt Borowicz (Sr., Football, Stephen, Minn.)was chosen due to his recent major accomplishment of being named Capital One Academic All-America® Division II First Team. Borowicz, who holds a 3.9 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in health science, was one of 24 student-athletes across all of NCAA Division II football to receive All-America first team accolades for his performance in the classroom. Borowicz was a four-year member of the UMC football team and was a starting tackle on the Golden Eagle offensive line. Borowicz was a 2012, a 2013 and will be a 2014 NSIC Fall All-Academic pick and has made the Dean’s List each of the last five semesters. On the field, Borowicz started all 11 games this season. He has blocked for an offense that has produced over 1,700 yards passing and over 1,000 yards rushing this season. Borowicz started his career as a tight end and originally started playing offensive line some as a sophomore before making the full transition to tackle as a junior. Borowicz has been one of UMC’s leading academic performers during his entire career for the Golden Eagles.
For the Week of Nov. 20 - 26
- Alexa Thielman (Jr., Women’s Basketball, Buffalo, Minn.) averaged 19 points and six rebounds in two games at the Oahu Classic in Honolu, Hawai’i. Thielman shot 12-of-24 for 50 percent for the week. She shot 5-of-13 from beyond the arc for 38.5 percent and was 9-of12 for 75 percent from the charity stripe. Thielman had a near double-double of 14 points and nine rebounds in a win over University of Hawai’i Hilo. She was 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. In a loss to Hawai’i Pacific University, Thielman had 24 points and three rebounds and was 8-of-16 from the field and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc.
- Tyler West, Jr. (Sr., Men’s Basketball, Portland, Ore.) averaged 16.3 points and 12.7 rebounds per game during three games last week for the Golden Eagles. He tallied two double-doubles on the week. West tallied 26 points and 18 rebounds in a double-overtime win over Crossroads College. West was 9-of-15 from the field in the game, as he helped lead the Golden Eagles to the win. Against University of Jamestown, West had 11 points and nine rebounds and was 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. In an exhibition against North Dakota State University, West had 12 points and 11 boards. He was 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
