- The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team picked up a sweep last weekend with wins over University of Mary and Minot State University. The Golden Eagles defeated U-Mary Friday 71-54 led by 26 points from Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn.), who was 8-of-16 from the field and broke out of a three-point shooting slump, going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. In addition to Thielman, Micaela Noga (Fr., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) added 14 points, while Emily Gruber (Fr., F/C, Monticello, Minn.) had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Eagles completed the sweep with a 59-45 win over Minot State. UMC was led by Thielman with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. In addition, Gruber tallied another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn.) had 11 points. The UMC women’s basketball team is now 5-7 (4-4 NSIC) after opening the 2015 part of their schedule with a pair of wins. UMC is tied with U-Mary for fourth place in the NSIC North. - The UMC men’s basketball team picked up a split last weekend with a 64-61 win over University of Mary and an 80-73 loss to Minot State University. The Golden Eagles are off to a strong start on the season with a 6-6 (4-4 NSIC) mark. They are currently in a tie for third in the NSIC North with Minot State. UMC is off to one of their best starts in program history with conference wins over U-Mary, Bemidji State University, St. Cloud State University and Wayne State College (Neb.). In Friday’s win over U-Mary, UMC was led by 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from Kevin Larson (Sr., G, New Ulm, Minn.). Derrick Redd, Jr. (Jr., G, Menifee, Calif.) added 12 points, while John Hughes (Jr., F, San Diego, Calif.) had 11 points and six rebounds. In the loss Saturday to Minot State, the Golden Eagles out-played the Beavers in the second half, but dug themselves into too big of a hole in the first half. UMC was led by 21 points from Redd, along with a near double-double of 13 points and nine boards from Larson. - Emily Gruber (Fr., F/C, Monticello, Minn.) was named NSIC North Division Player of the Week Dec. 15 after averaging 23.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in a split against Augustana College (S.D.) and Wayne State College (Neb.), which included a win over then-No. 7 Wayne State. - The University of Minnesota Crookston had 24 student-athletes recognized on the 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Fall All-Academic Team as released Tuesday afternoon by the conference office. The NSIC had 624 student-athletes earn NSIC All-Academic honors for the 2014 fall athletic season. UMC’s 24 student-athletes are an improved over 20 on the 2013 Fall All-Academic Team. - The UMC soccer team earned the 2014 College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Bronze Award given to teams who exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season. The Bronze level means that UMC received no more than 10 cards accumulated during the season.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Jan. 1 - 7

- Alexa Thielman (Jr., Women’s Basketball, Buffalo, Minn..) averaged 23.5 points per game as the Golden Eagles picked up a weekend sweep with a pair of dominant wins over University of Mary and Minot State University. Thielman was 17-of-33 for the weekend for 51.5 percent from the field and 6-of-10 from three-point range for 60.0 percent, breaking a recent slump from beyond the arc. In addition, Thielman was 7-of-8 for 87.5 percent from the charity stripe. She averaged 5.5 rebounds on the weekend and three steals. Thielman tallied 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in a 71-54 win over University of Mary. She added seven rebounds, one assist and five steals on the game. Against Minot State, Thielman had 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and 2-of3 from beyond the arc. She added four rebounds, one assist and one steal.

- Kevin Larson (Sr., Men’s Basketball, New Ulm, Minn.) averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds on the weekend as the Golden Eagles picked up a split with a win over University of Mary and a loss to Minot State University. Larson was 11-of-22 for 50 percent from the field and 5-of-11 for 45.5 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, Larson averaged two assists on the weekend. Larson tallied 14 points and four rebounds in the win over U-Mary. He was 6-of-10 from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. In the loss against Minot State, Larson was 5-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc with 13 points and nine rebounds and three assists.

For the Week of Dec. 18-24

- Ebony Livingston (Sr., Women’s Basketball, Minneapolis, Minn.) tallied 12 points and seven rebounds on 4-of-7 shooting from the field in a 71-69 loss to Bemidji State University Dec. 19. The Golden Eagles continue to come close in many of their games this season, with six of seven losses coming by an average of 5.6 points. Livingston has put together two of her better games this season against the Beavers, she is averaging 13.5 points and seven rebounds against Bemidji State in two games. Livingston enters this weekend averaging 9.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.

- Kevin Larson (Sr., Men’s Basketball, New Ulm, Minn.) put together perhaps the best game of his two years at UMC in a win over Bemidji State University, which snapped a losing streak which had dated back to Feb. 10, 2008 against the Beavers. Larson had 11 points and four rebounds with four steals against Bemidji State. He was 3-of-4 shooting from the field. Larson comes into this weekend averaging 7.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
