BEMIDJI STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

fter spending a season through growing pains, the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team is ready to compete again in a tough Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference that produced last season’s NCAA Division II national champion, Minnesota State University, Mankato. The 2008-09 squad posted a 3-24 overall and 1-19 NSIC record, establishing the conference record for most league losses in a season with Upper Iowa University, who also had 19 losses last year. That team had a large group of underclssmen that are now a year older and a year wiser, poised to prove that last season’s marks will not be a trend. “As a group, I could go down the line and say they all put the time and effort in last season. None of us felt good about how last year went as far as what our record was,” said head coach Mike Curfman. “As coaches we try and see what we can do to get better and as players they are doing the same thing. They have worked hard in the weight room and have done more conditioning and their basketball skills have gotten better.” The Beavers have a team that has just one senior, three juniors, six sophomores and six freshmen, but there are eight newcomers. Despite still having a young and new team, BSU is returning a sophomore class that had 20.2 minutes, 31.6 points, 18.8 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game in 2008-09. “We are going to be a more balanced team,” Curfman said. “Last year we were a guard oriented team and at times it went well, but when teams took that away from us we weren’t able to come away with as many wins as we would’ve liked. We will be able to push the ball and we have some depth on the inside. If you take that with the new players we have coming in, it creates a lot of reasons for optimism this season.”

OFFENSE/DEFENSE

SCHEDULE

This season the Beavers will be running a motion, high-low offensive style, hoping to score more points after producing 63.9 ppg last season, which was 13th in the league. Working to BSU’s advantage is that its players are interchangeable when it comes to point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. Consistency and balance will be key for the young Beavers on the offensive end of the floor.

The Beavers play five nonconference games before starting the home and NSIC schedule Dec. 4 against Minnesota State University Moorhead. The season will begin Nov. 16 at Mayville State. BSU then travels to Grinnell, Iowa for the Grinnell Tip Off Tournament Nov. 20-21 to play Martin Luther and Buena Vista University. The Beavers will give thanks at the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Tournament Nov. 27-28 in Phoenix, Ariz. BSU plays Western State University (Colo.) and Western New Mexico, with Western New Mexico being a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and having regional implications. BSU opens the NSIC and home season with games against the Dragons Dec. 4 and the University of Minnesota, Crookston Dec. 5.

“All our guards and posts are interchangeable. It doesn’t matter if you play the 1,2,3 or 4,5. The 4,5 mirror each other and the 1,2,3 mirror each other,” Curfman said. “The 3-point shot will be a very important part of our team, but we are looking for balance between 3-point shooting and an inside scoring presence. If we can do that, we can get back to those seasons where we were in the top-20 in the nation in scoring.” Defense wasn’t a strong part of the Beavers’ game last season, allowing a league-worst 80.7 ppg. BSU also had the worst scoring margin in the league at a -16.8 clip. Rebounding was also an issue for the small team that ran five guards at times. The Beavers had a -3.9 rebounding margin last season, which was 12th in the NSIC. This season BSU will look to make strides in that category and also bear-down on the defensive side of the ball. The defensive end is the biggest thing we need to improve on, no doubt about it,” Curfman said. “We were not very good defensively last year. We gave up too many points per game and we obviously didn’t rebound enough, as our leading rebounder was a guard. We didn’t have the mentality to get after it on the defensive end. Offense is important, but you have to take care of the ball because teams are too good to be giving them second and third chances. I think we are going to show some strides in that area. If we want to be as successful as we think we can, it has to start on the defensive end.”

“We are excited for the Phoenix trip because it will be important to get some time to bond and be together. The nonconference schedule is challenging, but it has to be because our conference is one of the top Division II conferences in the nation,” Curfman said.

NEWCOMERS The Beavers are bringing in a strong crop of freshmen players from around the state of Minnesota, adding a junior college transfer, adopting a former BSU volleyball player and welcoming back a familiar face to the program. BSU has six true freshmen this season in Jessie Althoff (Becker, Minn.), Becky Crummy (Argyle, Minn.), Emily Kaus (Eagan, Minn.), Katie Pettit (Howard Lake, Minn.), Shannon Thompson (Rosemount, Minn.) and Tiffany Van Haaften (Chaska, Minn.). The Beavers are also adding junior Anna Hebrink, who comes to BSU via Riverland Community College in Austin, Minn. Heather Sampson competed for the BSU volleyball team in 2007 and 2008 and will enter the 2009-10 basketball season as a sophomore. Sampson ranked second on the team in kills (157) and blocks (51) in 2008. Finally, the Beavers welcome junior Kelly Landsverk back to the squad. Landsverk played as a freshman for BSU during the 2006-07 season, playing in 23 games.

Fr. F 2 Ellie Wessling, 5-10, Winsted, Minn. Sophomore Kiki Phillips returns to the Beavers after a successful freshman campaign. Phillips played in 24 games, averaging 15.5 minutes, 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. She will be asked to play a variety of positions in 2009-10. “Kiki is one of those players that is really versatile,” Curfman said. “She can play some shooting guard and she can play some post. She will be somewhere between the 2 and 5 at different times, depending on match-ups and opposing line-ups.”

Epema leads the returning players in scoring, tallying 11.1 points per game, while playing in all 27 games, starting 24. Epema also led the team in 3-pointers with 73 in a BSU single-season record 207 attempts. Baldwin posted 7.1 points per game and led the team in rebounds with 148 (5.5 rpg). She also played in all 27 games, starting 24. Also in the mix is the lone senior Kim Rosecrans, who spent her first season with the Beavers last year, playing in 25 games. “Sydney has a fantastic 3-point shot and has improved the other elements of her game this offseason, working offensively off the dribble and she has worked really hard to get better defensively,” Curfman said. “We hope to move Sam to her natural position,” Curfman said. “Last year she played a lot of point guard and she is more of a shooting guard. We have seen a lot of good things in practice so far this fall. The great thing is the skills she learned last season are going to help her in the future.”

McKay was the second leading rebounder, pulling down 130 (4.8 rpg) boards. She also added the third most points with 233 (8.6 ppg), while playing in all 27 games, starting 19. Sophomore Taylor Davis will look to add to her freshman performance in 2009-10 after posting 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Davis was one of three freshmen to play in all 27 contests.

“Kim is the heart and soul of our team. There is no one more positive or more excited about the game,” Curfman said. “She loves the game. We look for her to contribute this year.”

ike Curfman is in his fifth year as head women’s basketball coach for the Beavers. Curfman has directed Bemidji State University to a 43-68 overall record (.387) in his four seasons while posting a 25-45 (.357) mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Entering his fifth season as head coach, Curfman becomes the third-longest tenured coach in the program’s history, trailing only Doreen Zierer who coached 11 seasons (1990-2002) and Ruth Howe who coached the programs ‘first 10 seasons (1967-77). Curfman is tied for fourth on BSU’s alltime coaching victories list. He trails Zierer (129), Howe (95), Joan Campbell (70) and is tied with Mary McDonald (43). The 2008-09 season was the worst under Curfman as the team posted a 3-24 overall and 1-19 NSIC record. In the 2007-08 season, BSU finished with a 13-15 record under Curfman, going 9-9 in the NSIC to finish league play in sixth place. With 13 wins it was the third consecutive season the Beavers have had 10 wins or more. The last time a Beaver squad had three consecutive 10-plus win seasons was from 1990-1993. Rejuvenating a program is nothing new to Curfman, he came to Bemidji State after six years at the helm of the University of Minnesota, Crookston program where three times during his tenure his teams set or equaled school records for wins (2000-01, 2001-02 and 2004-05) and racked up 55 victories during his final four seasons. While at UMC, he helped to elevate the program to the NCAA Division II level. After a 1-26 season in 1999-2000, Curfman directed the Golden Eagles to a school-record nine wins in 2000-01 and increased that record by16 the following year. In 2002-03, under Curfman,UMC made the NSIC tournament for the first time, cruising to the championship game before falling to NCAA Tournament bound University of Minnesota Duluth. Most recently his Golden Eagles tied for fourth place in the NSIC posting a league record of 8-6 while going 16-11 overall and making their first ever appearance in the North Central Regional Polls. He has mentored 10 All-Conference selections as a head coach including 2000-01 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and 2001-02 Player of the Year Jessica Forsline and was himself named as the 2002 NSIC Coach of the Year. Curfman’s teams have done equally as well in the classroom. During his tenure at UMC, the Golden Eagles posted at least a 3.0 team grade point average and finished in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Top 10 Academic National Rankings with a team G.P.A. of better than 3.4 in 2004-05. Previous to taking over the UMC program, Curfman was an assistant coach at St. Cloud State University (1994-99), serving as Dr. Lori Ulferts’ top assistant for five seasons. He also coached under Dr. Ulferts at Moorhead State University (199294) as an assistant while serving as the head coach of the junior varsity team. He has presented at a number of camps and clinics and is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Minnesota State High School League Coaches Association. A native of Fosston, Minn., Curfman was an Academic All-America selection for the UMC basketball team while earning his A.A.S. degree. He then moved on to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. where he graduated in 1992 with his B.A. in Business Administration while captaining the Cobber men’s basketball program. In 1994, Curfman earned his MBA in business administration from Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University Moorhead) while acting as an assistant coach for the Dragons’ women’s basketball program. Curfman currently resides in Fosston with his wife Michelle, his son Caleb and his daughter Emily.

Super is in her third season at Bemidji State serving as both an assistant women’s basketball coach and the institution’s head women’s golf coach. She came to BSU after spending four years in the high school ranks. She spent two years as a Communication Arts/Literature teacher at the Bemidji Area Schools, teaching English for grades 9-12 at the Lumberjack Alternative High School. During her stint at the Bemidji Area Schools, Super was also the one-act play director. From August 2003 to March 2005 she was a long-term substitute English teacher at Wyndmere Public Schools where she taught English for seventh, eighth, ninth and eleventh grades. During Supers’ two-year stop at Wyndmere she was the head girls volleyball coach, where she led the Warriors to their first-ever state tournament appearance in 2003. She was also the assistant boys basketball coach during her time at Wyndmere Public Schools. Along with teaching high school students, Super has been a guest speaker at area high schools, speaking on peer pressure, respect and pride.

Prior to her jump to the teaching ranks, Super was a sports announcer, news assistant and DJ for Thief River Falls Radio (2000-2002). During her time there she covered over 100 games, including boys and girls basketball, women’s college basketball, high school and college volleyball, softball, baseball, girls hockey and football sideline reporting. Along with covering games, Super compiled news stories, conducted interviews, produced advertising, and worked with public relations and promotions. In addition to her time at Thief River Falls Radio, she worked as a sports anchor/reporter at Studio One Television at the University of North Dakota for two years. On the basketball court, Super was a member of the 3-time Division II National Championship Basketball Team at the University of North Dakota. During her high school career at Badger-Greenbush-Middle River, Super compiled 2,804 points in her career which sits her in eighth place on the all-time scorers list for Minnesota girls basketball. In addition to her coaching experience at Wyndmere, Super is the founder and director of Super Camps, which began in June 1997. She organizes and instructs Super Hooper Basketball camps for boys and girls grades K-6 in northwestern Minnesota. Super has received degrees from two different institutions. In May 2000 she graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and then received her second Bachelor of Arts degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead in May 2005 in secondary education-communication arts/literature. Her husband, Jeremy Popp, is the head women’s softball coach at BSU. They reside in Bemidji with their rescued pets.

Pamela Findlay begins her first season as the graduate assistant coach for the women’s basketball squad. Her coaching experience includes various clinics and camps throughout high school and college. She comes to BSU after attending the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She played four years of basketball for the Falcons, serving as a co-captain her senior season. Findlay attended Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, Ill. She competed in varsity basketball, cross country and track. Born in Winfield, Ill., she is the daughter of Rick and Jill Findlay. A biology major at AFA, Findlay is seeking her master’s degree in sports studies at Bemidji State University.

In her first season at Bemidji State University, Bekah Hessinger is responsible for athletic training services supplied to the BSU women’s basketball team. In addition to basketball, Hessinger also works closely with the Beaver football team and a variety of other athletic programs. Hessinger graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training and is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association-Board of Certification. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in sports studies at Bemidji State.

Mary Graham is in her second season as student manager with the women’s basketball team. She has various weekly and game day duties. She attended West Anchorage High School, playing varsity girl’s hockey and soccer. Was the senior class president and managed boy’s football, baseball and hockey all four years. Graham is also a student trainer for the BSU football team. She is majoring in secondary education-social studies with minors in political science and exercise science, with a coaching specialty. Intends to pursue a masters degree in athletic training.

Hebrink comes to Bemidji State after a successful two-year career at Riverland Community College were she led the Blue Devils to 55 wins, including a school record 23 wins during the 2008-09 season. In two season’s she averaged 16.0 ppg, 6.0 apg, 5.0 rpg, and 2.2 spg while shooting 46-percent from the field (313-675) and 40.6-percent from behind the arc (152-374). Finishing up her two year campaign with the Blue Devils, Hebrink holds the school record for three’s in a season (79), assists in a career (332) and three’s in a career (152). She garnered numerous awards while at RCC, highlighted by being named to the NJCAA All-American 3rd team at the conclusion of 2009 along with being named to the first and second All-State teams.

2007-08 (Freshman) Made an appearance in 26 of 28 games earning 16 starts during her freshman campaign... made an immediate impact on the court for BSU as she had eleven double-digit scoring games including a career-high performance of 20 points at Mayville State (1//2/08)...in her first collegiate contest she pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds vs. St. Scholastica (11/24/07)...was fifth among her teammates with 9.0 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per contest...shot .426 percent from the field (84-197) while leading the Beavers from behind the arc shooting .538 (14-26)...averaged 22.0 minutes per game which was most among freshmen.

BARNUM HIGH SCHOOL A four-time letter winner at Barnum High, she stepped away from the school after leaving quite a footprint on the program. During her four seasons, she piled up a school record of 2,213 points standing as one of just six players in the Northland to top the 2,000-mark. She also set the single-game standard at the school in a 49-point Section 7A Tournament game. For her career, she hit on better than 66-percent of her field goal attempts and helped lead the Bombers to a Section 7A championship and a third place finish at the 2006 Minnesota State High School Tournament. She is a three-time All-Polar League first team selection, earning conference Most Valuable Player honors in both 2006 and 2007. She was named to the Duluth News Tribune All-Tournament team twice and was honored as the media outlets Player of the Week on four occasions. She eclipsed the 1,000-point and 1,000 rebound plateaus by powering her team into the post season, earning a spot on the Wells Fargo All-State Tournamnet Team.During her senior season she averaged 28 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks per contest, she was named as the Duluth News Tribune’s 2007 Player of the Year, earned a spot on the Pioneer Press All-State Second Team and made her second consecutive appearance on the list of Minnesota Basketball News Top 100 Players in the State. A 1,000-plus point scorer at St. Francis High School, Borstner was a four-time all-conference selection... She guided the Fighting Saints to the state tournament in her sophomore and senior seasons...She surpassed the 1,000 point plateau during her junior year, in which the team went 24-4, winning the North Suburban Conference Championship...The team also won the conference championship her senior season, posting a 25-5 mark...She racked-up 20.4 points per game her senior season, which finished 11th in the state of Minnesota...During her four-year career, the Fighting Saints totalled a 92-20 record...A captain in her final two seasons, she finished her career second on the SFHS points list (1,868) and seventh on the career rebounding chart (486)...She also holds the record for most free throws in one game (17-of-23), is second on the single-season scoring list (612) and ranks fourth in scoring average in a season (20.4 ppg)... Hover was a two-time First Team All-Heart O’ North Conference pick, receiving the honor her freshman and senior seasons...She led the Golden Bears in scoring her freshman and senior years, guiding the team to a regional championship her senior year, qualifying for sectionals...A captain her senior season, Hover scored 15.6 points per game to sit second in the conference and 19th in Wisconsin’s Division II in scoring, earning a spot on the All-Northwest Second Team...Was named a All-Northwest Special Mention after her freshman and junior seasons, earning all-conference second team honors as a junior.... During her tenure at BHS the team went 71-20... She was named the team’s best offensive player three-times (freshman, junior and senior seasons) during her time as a Golden Bear...She broke the school record for most 3-point shots made in a season with 71, while breaking the record for 3-pointers in a game with seven...Hover is a three-sport athlete, earning seven letters in basketball (four), volleyball (three) and track (one)...Her resume is just as long in the classroom, as she is a high honor roll student (four years), National Honor Society member (three years) and a three-sport academic excellence award winner, while settling in the top-five percent of her class...Hover is a BSU Academic Achievement Scholarship and Campus Honor Scholarship winner for 2010--11.

CURFMAN ON LEE “We are very excited about adding Morgan to our team for this year. Morgan is a very talented guard that can play several positions and she is a great scoring threat. I like that she not only is a very good 3-point shooter, but also that she can create her own shot off the dribble. In addition to her offensive abilities, she has strong instincts on defense and is a very smart basketball player.”

HAYWARD HIGH SCHOOL

Lee was a standout guard at Hayward High School, leading the Hurricanes to back-to-back Heart O’ North Conference championships her sophomore and junior seasons. She led the conference in scoring as a junior and was second her sophomore year, en route to first team all-conference honors in both seasons. The three-year starter and team captain was named Third-team All-Northwest last season. Lee is a two-time team most valuable player, leading HHS to a combined 36-9 record the last two seasons. She has 771 career points and led the conference her junior season in 3-pointers made and posted a 48-percent mark from beyond the arc. Lee is a 10-time letterwinner in three sports, basketball, volleyball and track, and has been apart of seven conference championships. She was a first-team all-conference member with the volleyball squad three times, leading the Hurricanes to three regional titles. On the track team, Lee is a two-time state qualifier in the 4x400. In the classroom, Lee is an honor roll student.
