Fiscal Year 2023-2024

Impact of Philanthropy

With each passing year, our SDSU family continues our commitment to academic excellence, scholarly research, and community engagement and inclusivity. These shared values empower our students, faculty, and sta to soar and foster an environment in which ideas and dreams flourish. Ours is truly a university on the rise, driving innovation and delivering impactful results, and I am honored that you are a part of our story. Alongside our dedicated donors, partners and friends, we have achieved new heights in our 127th year — from record enrollment and reaching a milestone of half a million living alumni to celebrating The Campanile Foundation’s 25th anniversary, securing record-breaking research funding and expanding our university’s footprint, just to name a few. At every turn and in every way, your kindness enhances the Aztec experience. Thank you for joining us on this journey to build a better future for the university and those we serve. We are deeply grateful for your support.

Celebrating The Campanile Foundation’s 25th Anniversary

Campuswide Accolades

Initially formed under the leadership and foresight of President Emeritus Stephen L. Weber in 1999, The Campanile Foundation’s charge was to increase private funding in support of SDSU and its students to offset decreases in state funding. This year, the foundation marked 25 years of bolstering the university’s philanthropic goals alongside our loyal and caring alumni, friends, and community members.

Without you, the university would not be where it is today — YOU are the difference at SDSU.

SDSU ATHLETICS

The Aztecs celebrated new conference championships in women’s soccer, women’s swim and dive, women’s tennis, men’s golf, and women’s softball. Men’s basketball secured a second consecutive run to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16, and women’s basketball advanced to the Mountain West Tournament Championship game for the first time since 2013.

SDSU MISSION VALLEY

The SDSU Mission Valley river park opened and was honored with the Project of the Year award in the Parks category at the 2024 American Public Works Association Awards (San Diego/Imperial County Chapter).

SDSU IMPERIAL VALLEY

The university broke ground on the SDSU Imperial Valley Sciences & Engineering Laboratories, a state-of-the-art teaching and research hub that will advance STEM education and career pathways in the region.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

Techstars San Diego powered by SDSU, a globally renowned accelerator program supported by SDSU mentors, entrepreneursin-residence, and Techstars staff, trained its inaugural cohort of 12 startups to fundraise, network, and build their companies.

AZTEC COMMUNITY

The campus community celebrated the 10th anniversary of SDSU’s Pride Center and received our third consecutive “Best of the Best” award from Campus Pride, recognizing the nation’s most LGBTQfriendly colleges and universities.

Highs Across SDSU

Faculty Honors Student Success

Dr. Guadalupe X. “Suchi” Ayala, distinguished professor in the School of Public Health, was honored with the 2024 Albert W. Johnson University Research Lectureship — the university’s highest recognition of research and scholarly achievement — for her body of work to promote health behavior change.

Stephen L. Weber (1942-2024) improved SDSU graduation rates, built strong ties with the San Diego community, raised academic standards, and diversified the campus by pioneering programs to serve military veterans and low-income, first-generation college students. Due to countless, meaningful contributions throughout his 15-year tenure as president, the Susan and Stephen Weber Honors College was named in his and his wife’s honor in 2015.

The Gus & Emma Thompson Black Resource Center Endowment was created to advance the retention and success of SDSU students who participate in the center and to honor the Thompsons, a Black couple who were among modern Coronado’s earliest residents.

Seven SDSU students received prestigious Fullbright grants that provide the opportunity to expand perspectives and improve understanding of different cultures. Five recipients will conduct research abroad, while two will work in Fulbright’s English Teaching Assistant Program.

SDSU’s philanthropy-driven, state-of-the-art Performing Arts District opened in September 2023, offering students from various disciplines a vibrant hub for collaboration.

Gus Thompson had been born into slavery in Kentucky and came to Coronado in the 1880s with an entrepreneurial vision. He built a home and livery stable, above which were rooms rented by Black and immigrant workers who had trouble securing housing during that era. In the late 1930s, the Thompsons moved to San Diego and rented the house to Lloyd Sr. and Margaret Dong under a rent-to-own agreement. The property was sold to the Dongs following Gus’ death and remained in the family until recently. Brothers Ron Dong and Lloyd Dong Jr. selflessly gave the proceeds of the sale to SDSU’s Black Resource Center (BRC) as a gesture of gratitude to the Thompsons. With the heartfelt donation, the BRC was renamed the Gus & Emma Thompson Black Resource Center in their honor.

Over the course of nearly 15 years, the Jim and Janet Sinegal Scholarship supported more than 225 students in the College of Education who were working toward their teaching credentials. The Future of STEM

In fall 2023, SDSU launched the STEM Forward initiative, a bold multidisciplinary effort that will increase the university’s investment in research, teaching, and infrastructure with key projects happening across several colleges and campuses.

at SDSU

Life Sciences Building

Design and construction planning began in fall 2023 on a state-of-the-art life sciences building on the San Diego campus, pictured left, which will house the vast majority of SDSU’s lab-intensive classes wherein students gain the practical skills needed to prepare them for the workforce.

Sciences and Engineering Laboratories

In February 2024, SDSU broke ground on the Sciences and Engineering Laboratories at SDSU Imperial Valley, which will host new, four-year degree programs in chemistry and engineering designed for Lithium Valley, core facilities for potential public-private partners (P3) in Imperial Valley, and science teaching laboratories to serve existing programs, including nursing and environmental health.

Innovation District Labs

Planning for the SDSU Mission Valley Innovation District continued. The site will house researchers side-by-side with partners while expanding entrepreneurship programming, freeing space on the San Diego campus to increase enrollment.

“STEM Forward is truly a university-wide effort to provide state-of-the-art resources and infrastructure for all of our students, faculty, and staff so they can generate impactful ideas and scalable solutions.”

Endowed Faculty Support

Endowed chairs, professorships, directorships, fellowships, and lectureships help recruit and retain outstanding faculty to SDSU, enabling our research activity to grow while continuing to support excellence in teaching. We are grateful to SDSU supporters who share our vision of becoming a premier public research university and have established distinguished faculty positions to achieve this long-term goal.
