We must extend a special thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigated the challenges of construction and space constraints during this transformative period for our theatre facilities. Your steadfast support has been invaluable as we strive to provide the best possible experience for our audience. We also express our profound gratitude to the students, staff, and faculty whose dedication and tireless efforts serve as the lifeblood of our theatrical community. Their unwavering commitment to excellence enriches our cultural landscape and reinforces our shared vision of fostering creativity and innovation. As we bid farewell to this season, we eagerly anticipate welcoming you back for our upcoming 24/25 Season, where we promise to continue pushing boundaries and delivering unforgettable experiences in these new and contemporary theatre facilities. Your unwavering support throughout the season has been the cornerstone of our success, and we are deeply appreciative of your enthusiasm for the performing arts. As we gather for this final production, we reflect on the myriad of performances that have graced our school, each one a testament to the power of storytelling and the magic of live theatre.
In the ever-evolving landscape of social media inundation and artificial intelligence, amidst the ceaseless march of technological progress, there exists an immutable truth: the timeless allure of the human experience, unveiled through live performance, shall forever captivate the hearts and minds of humanity. For in the ethereal exchange between performer and audience, amidst the raw vulnerability and unfiltered emotions laid bare upon the stage, lies a sacred communion—a testament to the enduring resonance of our shared humanity, transcending the digital ephemera of our age. Thus, as the digital realm expands its dominion and algorithms dictate our digital interactions, let us not forget the irreplaceable essence of witnessing fellow humans, in flesh and spirit, weaving tales of passion, struggle, and triumph, reminding us of our intrinsic connection to the human narrative. Theatre has always endured throughout human history.
Thank you once again for joining us tonight. Please enjoy the performance.

The Making of In A Sunshine State
An Interview with the Creators: T.C. Lind, Derek Gregor, and Phoebe Kruetz with Assistant Dramaturg Dean Vicedo
Q: What brought you first to write the lyrics?
Phoebe: The genesis of this project was a workshop sponsored by this guy, Ben West…he had an idea of holding a dedicated “think tank” where he would take a lyricist, a book writer, and a composer—who had never worked together before—and put them in a room together for month to see what they came up with. Derek, T.C., and I were all fresh to each other with varying degrees of experience…and the prompt that Ben gave us was the recently released love letters of Leonard Bernstein. But while studying queer life in the 50s and 60s, we came across the story of the Johns Committee, which was going on in Florida at that time. None of us had heard of it before. We immediately responded to the story, and I think T.C. was the driving force: “This is the story. This is the world we need to be in.” That’s how it came to be…
Q: What are you hoping for the audience to take away from this musical?
Phoebe: I’m hopeful that they’ll just be moved by the story. That has to stay my primary focus as a creator. If I start thinking about the historical import of it, it’s too hard to get any work done. I’m just trying to make sure the songs come at the right places and the moments are landing in such a way that you’ll be moved by the characters. But hopefully, people who maybe went in with one concept of what the show was going to be—or who they were going to relate to—might come out with a different perspective.
“What I’ve learned the most—through my own journey, and I hope that others come away with this as well after watching our show—is the importance of community.”
—T.C. Lind
Q: How was working together, all three of you…how was that process and did you learn anything from that?
Derek: Well it’s a very unique situation to be paired with people that you don’t have any working history with, let alone know, at all, and I think that the person who assembled the three of us (his name is Ben West) is a really interesting producer with an interesting brain, and I mean that in a good sense…he knew that he had to choose people who were going to be able to step into that unique dynamic and figure out how to make it work…I think we all have our understanding of what our skills are and our confidence…so we’re coming in strong, but also open.
Tickets and Information: ttf.sdsu.edu
T.C.: I think we’ve created a safe space for the three of us to throw things at the wall to see if things work; to not be too precious with our respective areas. I felt very safe. This is the first time that I’ve ever written a musical, and I felt very safe from the jump that I was in good hands, and that I was with people who would allow me to speak out loud and create wild ideas. We take this very seriously, but at the same time, we don’t take ourselves too seriously…. We’re all so emotionally attached to telling the story the right way.
Q: Do you believe that there’s any possibility for social change?
T.C.: I would never want to write a show, especially about social change, with any “prescription.” I think there are activists out there who do that very well, but I will say, what I’ve learned the most—through my own journey, and I hope that others come away with this as well after watching our show—is the importance of community. The importance of having a safe queer space. And that change can’t happen without that community you set for yourself.
Q: Do you have any genres that inspired you?
Derek: I didn’t really know where I was going to go when I started because I didn’t know T.C. and Phoebe. I didn’t know what piece we were going to write. So the sound of the score has evolved and grown with the show…I want it to be as universal as possible, and it is a timeless story.
A Note from the Authors
While many aspects of this story are based on true events, In a Sunshine State is a work of fiction.
We were inspired by the unforgiveable actions committed by the Florida Legislative Investigation Committee against the Florida state education system, impacting the lives of countless LGBTQ+ citizens across mid20th Century Florida.
Our only hope is that by telling this story, we inspire a new generation of Americans to learn more about this heinous period in Florida state history.
Though our story focuses on certain actions taken against the queer community, we cannot forget the origins of the Committee’s shameful work, stemming from a racist tirade against desegregation in the South and direct attacks on Black and Brown citizens in Florida. We honor all who fought to protect civil liberties throughout the State.

Natalie McClure
Natalie is a MFA in Musical Theatre candidate graduating May ‘24. Natalie is excited to be performing and collaborating with all of the amazing talent at SDSU and the team from NYC. Natalie holds a BFA in Musical Theatre Performance from Western Michigan University. She has performed in Mamma Mia! in Las Vegas; multiple roles in regional theaters across the U.S.; in TV/Films; and in national commercials for Labatts, 1-800 Contacts, Nike, and more. Thank you to everyone involved in In a Sunshine State and her scholarship donors for making it possible to attend SDSU on this life changing MFA journey. A special thanks to Phoebe, T.C., Derek, Stephen and Rob for trusting her with telling Evelyn’s story. Love to Scott and Declan.
Kylie Stucki
Kylie is thrilled to be a part of this original piece. They are a dancer, actor, and performer, eager to move on this new main stage. You may have seen Kylie in past SDSU productions such as Steel Pier, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Cabaret. Outside of school, she played Anybodys in Teatro San Diego Theater’s West Side Story, and performed in Jason Mraz’s “Kaleidoscope” Concert. Currently, Kylie is teaching Musical Theater Dance at the Coronado Community Center, and Choreographing Annie Jr. through Coronado Junior Arts League.
CAST: WHO’S WHO
Olivia Heumann
Olivia is a third-year Musical Theatre major and is beyond thrilled to be working on her second Main Stage production! She has grown up in the working in Bay Area theater; some of her favorite credits being Little Women (Jo), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Olive), Matilda (Choreographer), Freaky Friday (Katherine), Wedding Crashers (Gloria), and Children of Eden here at SDSU. She has also spent much of her life in the choral circuit, training in Regional and State honor choirs (CCDA). She wants to thank her teachers, family, and coaches for their love and support!
Keegan Mcgowan
This is Keegan’s first show with SDSU, and he could not be happier that he has been given the privilege of being a part of this production. He has lived in San Diego for most of his life, and has been doing theatre for even longer. He is so proud to be able to help with presenting this story for the first time, and to help the world hear this incredible story.
Ethan Cruz
Ethan is rounding out his third year at SDSU and beyond excited to be performing on the Main Stage once again. Theatre has always been in his corner and has provided a specific understanding allowing him to thrive socially and professionally. Past performances include Idle Boy in 35MM (SDSU MTC), Hans in Cabaret (SDSU Mainstage), and most recently Ricky in Ride the Cyclone (Trinity Theatre Company). When he isn’t slaying for the audience, he can be found cheffing it up in the kitchen, drinking boba, and, more often than not, getting some much-needed rest. Ethan is so grateful for the opportunity to be part of bringing this incredible production to the stage. The show serving as a reminder to work with one another and help communities thrive and grow. Let’s ALL enjoy life and the many fruits it has to offer. You can find him on Instagram @eatmoreham.

Josh (he/him) is so excited to be in his first full production at SDSU! Regional credits include: Saturday Night Fever (Ensemble/Bobby & Joey U/S), Disney’s Tarzan (Ensemble), Something Rotten! Take a Seat!
SDSU performing arts invites you to take part in an exciting opportunity to support its new Performing Arts District in a meaningful way by participating in the Take A Seat campaign.
You have the opportunity to Take A Seat in the spotlight and enjoy having your name, a sentiment, anniversary date, or the name of another person you wish to honor laser-engraved on an elegant nameplate placed on one of the theater seats. Your sponsorship will support performances, students, faculty, and the greatest needs of the SDSU performing arts program.
The engraving you select promises that you or your loved one will be a visible part of this dynamic Performing Arts District for years to come.
