Warren Publisher January 15, 2020 will mark the 91st birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is also a time in which we remember that Dr. King was assassinated 52 years ago this April. We have an entire generation with social media posts of Dr. King, abbreviated glimpses through streets, schools, buildings and monuments named after him, but little knowledge of the man himself. Since so many today will celebrate the “I have a dream” portion of his most famous speech, we are publishing this special “commemorative” issue to give some insight into the life of Dr. King, the man.
Dr. King fought for what he thought was right. He believed that the “laws of man” never outweighed “the laws of God.” His fame came at great cost to his family and his life. Dr. King and 250,000 people Marched on Washington, D.C. on August 28th 1963 for Jobs and Freedom. He was in Washington, D.C. to “redeem a check” that he said had been returned from the government marked “insufficient funds.” The dream was never a substitute for the bounced check, as so many people have wrongly made the meaning of the speech over the years. Clearly there is a need for more information on this man for the many born 52 years after his death. It is our hope that this issue, with its collection of pictures, stories, highlights and content from his speeches will add to an understanding of Martin Luther King, Jr., the man and not the myth.
It is our hope that this issue will be retained as a point of reference for years to come. We deeply thank those who have placed ads in this issue as a means of making it possible to reach our children, churches, schools and general community as we remember the man. Let us also remember that he is the only individual in the history of this country who has a National Holiday in his honor as a private citizen, in addition to a monument on the National Mall. Let us remember Dr. King by making that which he fought and died for a continuing reality.

Born at noon on Tuesday, January 15, 1929 at the family home in Atlanta, Martin Luther King, Jr. was the first son and second child born to the Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. Also born to the Kings were Christine, now Mrs. Isaac Farris, Sr., and the Reverend Alfred Daniel Williams King, now deceased.
During the less than 13 years of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s leadership of the modern American Civil Rights Movement, from December, 1955 until April 4, 1968, African Americans achieved more genuine progress toward racial equality than the previous 350 years had produced. Dr. King is widely regarded as America’s preeminent advocate of nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in world history. Drawing inspiration from both his Christian faith and the peaceful teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King led a nonviolent movement in the late 1950’s and ‘60s to achieve legal equality for African-Americans in the United States. While others were advocating for freedom by “any means necessary,” including violence, Martin Luther King, Jr. used the power of words and acts of nonviolent resistance, such as protests and grassroots organizing, to achieve seeminglyimpossible goals. He went on to lead similar campaigns against poverty and international conflict, always maintaining fidelity to his principles that men and women everywhere, regardless of color or creed, are equal members of the human family.
SOME OF DR. KING’S MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE: In 1955, he was recruited to serve as spokesman for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which was a campaign by the African-American population of Montgomery, Alabama to force integration of the city’s bus lines. After 381 days of nearly universal participation by the black community, many of whom had to walk miles to work each day as a result, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in transportation was unconstitutional. In 1957, Dr. King was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an organization meant to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. He would serve as head of the SCLC until his assassination in 1968, a period during which he would emerge as the most important social leader of the modern American civil rights movement. In 1963, he led a coalition of numerous civil rights groups in a nonviolent campaign aimed at Birmingham, Alabama, which at the time was described as the “most segregated city in America.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s maternal grandparents were the Reverend Adam Daniel Williams, second pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Jenny Parks Williams. His paternal grandparents were James Albert and Delia King, sharecroppers on a farm in Stockbridge, Georgia. He married Coretta Scott, the younger daughter of Obadiah and Bernice McMurry Scott of Marion, Alabama, on June 18, 1953. The marriage ceremony took place on the lawn of the Scott’s home in Marion, Alabama. The Rev. King, Sr. performed the service.
UPBRINGING & STUDIES The son, grandson, and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, Martin Luther King Jr., named Michael King at birth, spent his first twelve years in the Auburn Avenue home that his parents, the Reverend Michael King and Alberta Williams King, shared with his maternal grandparents, the Adam Daniel Williams and Jeannie Celeste Williams. After Rev. Williams’ death in 1931, his son-inlaw became Ebenezer Baptist Church’s new pastor and gradually established himself as a major figure in state and national Baptist groups. The elder King began referring to himself (and later to his son) as Martin Luther King. During his undergraduate years at Atlanta’s Morehouse College (1944 to 1948), King gradually overcame his initial reluctance to accept his inherited calling. Morehouse President Benjamin E. Mays influenced King’s spiritual development, encouraging him to view Christianity as a potential force for progressive social change. He was ordained during his final semester at Morehouse, and by this time King had also taken his first steps toward political activism. He had responded to the postwar wave of anti-black violence by proclaiming in a letter to the editor of the Atlanta Constitution that African Americans were “entitled to the basic rights and opportunities of American citizens”. During his senior year King joined the Intercollegiate Council, an interracial student discussion group that met monthly at Atlanta’s Emory University. After leaving Morehouse, King increased his understanding of progressive Christian thought while
attending Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania from 1948 to 1951. Initially uncritical of liberal theology, he gradually moved toward Reinhold Niebuhr’s neoorthodoxy, which emphasized the intractability of social evil. Even as he continued to question and modify his own religious beliefs, he compiled an outstanding academic record and graduated at the top of his class. In 1951 King began doctoral studies in systematic theology at Boston University’s School of Theology. By the time he completed his doctoral studies in 1955, King had refined his exceptional ability to draw upon a wide range of theological and philosophical texts to express his views with force and precision. His ability to infuse his oratory with borrowed theological insights became evident in his expanding preaching activities in Boston-area-churches and at Ebenezer, where he assisted his father during school vacations.
THE BUS BOYCOTT SPARKS A MOVEMENT Although he considered pursuing an academic career, King decided in 1954 to accept an offer to become the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. In December 1955, when Montgomery’s black leaders, such as Jo Ann Robinson, E.D. Nixon, and Ralph Abernathy formed the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) to protest the arrest of NAACP official Rosa Park for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man, they selected King to head the new group. In his role as the primary spokesman of the year-long Montgomery bus boycott, King utilized the leadership abilities he had gained from his religious background and academic training to forge a distinctive protest strategy that involved the mobilization of black churches and skillful appeals for white support. With the encouragement of Bayard Rustin, Glenn Smiley, William Stuart Nelson and other veteran pacifists, King also became a firm advocate of Mohandas Gandhi’s precepts of nonviolence, which he combined with Christian social gospel ideas. In his last book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, King dismissed the claim of Black Power advocates “to be the most revolutionary wing of the social revolution taking place in the United States,” but he acknowledged that they responded to a psychological need among African Americans he had not previously addressed.
“Psychological freedom, a firm sense of self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night of physical slavery,” King wrote. “The Negro will only be free when he reaches down to the inner depths of his own being and signs with the pen and ink of assertive manhood his own emancipation proclamation.”

TRIPLE EVILS The Triple Evils of POVERTY, RACISM and MILITARISM are forms of violence Dr. King identified that exist in a vicious cycle. They are interrelated, all-inclusive, and stand as barriers to our living in the Beloved Community. Dr. King believed that, when we work to remedy one evil, we affect all evils. To work against the Triple Evils, one must develop a nonviolent frame of mind.

Dr. Mordecai Johnson, President of Howard University, inspired Dr. King to study nonviolence. King wrote in his first book, ‘Stride Toward Freedom,’ that, “one Sunday afternoon” he heard Johnson, who had just returned from India, speak about Gandhi’s campaigns of nonviolent resistance to British colonialism. King said, “His message was so profound and electrifying that I left the meeting and bought a half-dozen books on Gandhi’s life and works.” From that point on King integrated Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance into his Christian beliefs.
He didn’t plan to become a Civil Rights leader, he wanted to pastor a church, teach, write and raise a family. In 1955, his destiny was sealed by the social and political events of history, when local Southern African American leaders chose him to serve as their spokesman for the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Perhaps it is easy for those who have never felt the stinging darts of segregation to say, "Wait." But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick and even kill your black brothers and sisters; when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; when you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children, and see ominous clouds of inferiority beginning to form in her little mental sky, and see her beginning to distort her personality by developing an unconscious bitterness toward white people; when you have to concoct an answer for a five year old son who is asking: "Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?"; when you take a cross county drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you; when you are humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading "white" and "colored"; when your first name becomes "nigger," your middle name

October 26, 1968, Six months before his assassination, Dr. King encouraged a room full of middle schoolers at Philadelphia’s Barratt Junior High School to be their best selves, no matter their status in life. His words still resonate today. I want to ask you a question, and that is: What is in your life’s blueprint? This is the most important and crucial period of your lives. What you do now and what you decide now at this age may well determine which way your life shall go.
Number one in your life’s blueprint, should be a deep belief in your own dignity, your worth and your own “somebodiness.” Don’t allow anybody to make you feel that you are nobody. Always feel that you count... — MLK
It is very unfortunate that in so many instances our society has placed a stigma on the Negro’s color… Don’t be ashamed of your color, don’t be ashamed of your biological features. Somehow, you must be able to say, and really believe it, “I am black and beautiful.” … Secondly, in your life’s blueprint you must have as a basic principle the determination to achieve excellence in your various fields of endeavor. You’re going to be deciding as the days, as the years unfold, what you will do in life — what your life’s work will be. Set out to do it well. I say to you, my young friends, doors are opening to you–doors of opportunities that were not open to your mothers and your fathers — and the great challenge facing you is to be ready to face these doors as they open... I would urge you to study hard, to burn the midnight oil... Memorial Service was held Friday, January 10, 2020 at the 31st Street Seventh-day Adventist Church. Final arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary SISTER ESTELLE JOHNSON was born June 1, 1958 in Darlington, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Stellie and Rosa Anderson Foxe. God called Estelle home December 25, 2019. Estelle was an amazing woman. She meant what she said and said what she meant. Those left to celebrate her life: her husband Jimmy Johnson, her two sons Jimmy Lee Johnson, Jr., Robert Johnson and her baby girl Joalicia Johnson. Siblings Dessie Foxe, Shirley Ann Burgess, Maxine Foxe, Perline Williams, Freddie Lee Ervin and Alan Foxe. Siblings who have gone before, Jackie Foxe, Allean Coffee, Rowena White, Bernard Foxe. Grandchildren Quincy Alvarado, Dejoneria Jones, Deante Broughton, Cyrus Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

DOROTHY MAE PEARSON was born June 29, 1938 to Cassandra Rosetta Garnett-Arbuthnot and Nolan Oliver Arbuthnot in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the third of three children born to this union. Dorothy received her education at Dunbar Elementary and graduated from Vashon High School. Dorothy had a love for music. She took professional voice lessons, played piano. She was a soloist and her favorite song was “Precious Lord”. Dorothy was employed by the San Diego School District, and also worked as a beautician and caregiver for many years. She was a blessing to her husband and her family. Dorothy relocated to San Diego by train with her father and her two children to join her brother Oliver and mother Rose. She became a member of Gospel Center Church of God in Christ in 1958. She assisted with the Sunshine Band youth choir. She was a Hospitality Board member and was a part of many auxiliaries and fundraisers associated with the ministry. She had the honor of being the longest living church member of sixty-two years. In 1960, Dorothy was introduced to her husband Elector Lee Pearson, Jr. by Dell Frost. Dorothy was a strong woman who was a breast cancer survivor and an example to others fighting adversity.

Final arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary. CHARLES GREENE was born May 9, 1936 to Joe Henry and Miami Greene, in Washington, Arkansas. Charles developed an interest in boxing, eventually becoming a Golden Gloves champion. At the age of 17, Charles joined the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego. He served in the Korean War, as well as the White House during the Eisenhower presidency. Charles met Olivia Walker, they were married on September 5, 1959, and settled in San Diego. He left the Marine Corps after six years, but the Marine Corps never left him. “Once a Marine, always a Marine,”. Charles graduated from Midway Adult School and obtained his Associate Arts degree from San Diego City College. He later earned his Bachelor’s degree in public administration from San Diego State College in 1969. Charles joined the San Diego County Probation Department after graduation. He worked in juvenile probation to adult probation services, eventually supervising at the department’s honor camps. He retired from the department in 1997. After retirement, Charles was an officer in the Montford Point Marine Association, which memorializes the legacy of the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Above all, Charles was devoted to his family. When the children were young, there were the “Saturday trips,” in which the family would pile into the car, unaware of the adventures that awaited them. He loved to share his vast knowledge of history, particularly of African Americans. In addition, he dedicated his life to loving and mentoring his only grandchild, Symone. Charles renewed his faith in God, becoming a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in San Diego. Charles passed peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2019, after a long battle with various illnesses. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Julius and Joe, and his sister, Willie Jo. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Olivia; his children, Marcus, Michelle and Michael and wife, Kim; his grandchild, Symone; his sister, Mary Winston; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
On Tuesday, January 7, 2020, Dorothy was called home surrounded by her children and loved ones. Preceding her in death were father Nolan Arbuthnot; step-father Papa King; mother Cassandra Rosetta Arbuthnot-King; three sons Gary Pearson, Harold L. Bailey, and Edmond R. Bailey; two brothers Elder Oliver Arbuthnot, Sr. and Pastor Robert Arbuthnot. She leaves to mourn her passing sister-in-law Gloristeen Arbuthnot, Lilly Ruth Pearson, and Dell Pearson; children Elector L. Pearson, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Cassandra A. Bailey-Mazyck, Virginia R. Pearson, Rita D. Thomas , Priscilla M. Pearson, Gretchen Y. Pearson, Nolan D. Pearson and Ronald W. Love, of San Diego; twenty-eight grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, family, friends, and loved ones.

OLIVER HAROLD ARBUTHNOT, SR. was born on May 26, 1935. After graduating from high school, Oliver relocated to California and his first job was as a cook for Denny’s restaurant. Soon after that, he was blessed to get a job at University Ford in Mission Valley, California. He stayed there and retired after thirty years. Oliver was a faithful member at Gospel Center, Church of God in Christ. This is where he met and married Betty Ruth Jackson and raised a family. “Elder Dad,” as he was affectionately called, eventually went on to expand his ministry at Mount Olive Church of God in Christ and was a faithful member there. Later, he relocated his family from San Diego to Temecula, California, and began to attend Holy Tabernacle Church of the Living God. Everyone loved him on the prayer line and people from other cities he never met called him their spiritual father. The last church he attended and made his home was Adonai Ministries Christian Center where he served faithfully until the end alongside his son who was the pastor and founder. Anyone who met Oliver knew that he truly loved his family beyond measure and was concerned with keeping them together. He was a father figure to so many people and continued to pray for his family, friends, and his community. Oliver was preceded in death by father Nolan Arbuthnot; mother Cassandra Rosetta Garnett-Arbuthnot; and brother Robert Arbuthnot. Shortly after his passing his sister Dorothy Mae Pearson followed him to glory. Left to treasure his memory are sister-in-law, Gloristeen Arbuthnot; sons Dennis V. Arbuthnot of San Diego, Oliver H. Arbuthnot, Jr. of Menifee, CA, William J.N. Arbuthnot of Wildomar, CA, and Richard Moore of San Diego; daughters Philistine Williams , and Pamela L. Alvarez ; grandchildren Meisha, Derrick, Billy, Jarren, Donnell, Alicia, Breahna, Labrina, Eisha, Dawn Monique, Oliver H. Arbuthnot III, Jordan, Julian, Anaya, Ayanah, and Montel, along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

The Local MLK Parade History in San Diego By Dr. Robert Matthews Added notes by Dr. John E. Warren The Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in San Diego started in 1980 at the Knox Elementary School on 49th Street. It was organized by Dr. Francine Wells. This was before there was a Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday or even a desire in San Diego to name a street after Dr. King, as so many other cities had done. The Knox Elementary School parade, which started on the school playground, was led by Dr. Goodwin, then Superintendent of Schools for San Diego. In 1981, a committee was formed to continue the parade. It was funded by the National Christian Foundation until 1985. It was in 1986 that the Alpha Phi Fraternity took on the responsibility of coordinationg the parade. Dr. Carol Reeves and Dr. Robert are the only original Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity brothers who remain on the Parade Committee. Prior to the creation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National holiday, all parades of significance in San Diego were held on Broadway. As a means of validating Dr. King, the Parade moved from the community route which had grown to include 47th St., Imperial Avenue to Euclid Avenue and Euclid Avenue to Logan to downtown Broadway. After the establishment of the Federal Holiday in honor of Dr. King, all parades downtown were moved to Harbor Drive, with the exception of the King Parade. The initial reason was that the other parades took place during the week and did not interfere with cruise ships schedules as the industry began to grow in San Diego. The King Parade ended up marching around Petco Park’s Parking lot, which was a disgrace to many. After more talks with the San Diego Port Authority, it was agreed that the parade could take place on Harbor Drive on Sunday afternoons until this day.

Saturday, January 11th marked the 1st Annual Martin Luther King Inaugural Parade followed by the 10th Annual MLK Community Celebration. The parade started at Valencia Park Elementary School and ended at MLK Park and Recreation center on Skyline Drive. MLK Park held a concert featuring live music from Lyrical Groove, Miss Geminelle, and The Real J. Wallace, with Dj Kool T on the ones and twos. Marching bands from Lincoln High School and Hoover High School and Heartbeat Music & Performing Arts Academy rounded out the musical entertainment for the day. The lively celebration included dance performances by The Old School Skaters, JunkYard Dance Crew, and The World Of Dance U-Jam. Kids zones featuring face painting, rock climbing, and jumpers kept
the younger children happy, while plenty of food and merchandise vendors were on offer for the adults on hand. The boys in the community benefited from the “NFL Experience” hosted by Chris Jones, and former NFL player Lew Barnes, in collaboration with the Starr Pow Program. A Health and Wellness Pavilion featuring Kaiser Permanente offered free health screenings for all. This was a free event which brought out important people in the community, including Councilmember Monica Montgomery, Assemblymember Shirley Weber, and Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. Dr. Weber said of the event: “The goal is to bring the MLK Parade to the Community where he’s celebrated.” The organizers certainly reached that goal on Saturday.
