Annual Review 2016/17

Welcome and update from David Windmill, Chairman
.................................
We are very grateful to all of those who have supported the Scottish Seabird Centre in the past year, whether as donors, visitors, members or volunteers. With your help we have been able to continue delivering and expanding our important work as a charity in the fields of conservation and education. At the heart of all we do is our mission to inform and inspire people to care for wildlife and the natural environment. We achieve this in a wide variety of ways including public events, talks and exhibitions in the Centre as well as school visits to our Education Centre. With the North Berwick Wildlife Watch, led by our Education Officer Andrew, we created two videos to inform and engage: one on what do you when you find a puffling and one on how to rockpool in a safe and sustainable way. We also launched our first Seabird Holiday Club, which has gone from strength to strength.
We delivered a number of popular events including our third annual Puffin Fest; Captain Flap interactive science shows; beach cleans with North Berwick in Bloom and the Countryside Rangers; a collaborative winter exhibition with the Firth of Forth Lobster Hatchery; and the first Dr Bryan Nelson Memorial Lecture, in memory of our friend, supporter and the world’s leading expert on gannets. We hope that this can become an annual event. For the second year we secured a win for the BBC Countryfile Awards for the Bass Rock, via an online vote. We have continued to work hard to share and communicate all that we are doing through our ongoing marketing and PR and we enjoy engaging and interacting with supporters via our social media platforms. Partnership and collaboration remain a key focus. We supported the RSPB in their windfarm appeal calling for more research to be done into the impact on seabirds. While we support appropriate renewable energy projects to help reduce climate change, these need to be in locations that do not cause major threats to wildlife. The trading side of our operations is crucial to supporting the work of the charity. Our café, gift shop and boat trips have remained successful despite challenges and unpredictable weather. The Forth Ferry returned and we
launched other enhancements to the boat trips. We are very grateful to all our staff and volunteers who help deliver our objectives and ensure that our visitors consistently have a five- star experience that is both enjoyable and educational. We have been working on our plans for the future: to diversify the focus of the Centre to explore life above and below the waves, and to increase our education offering with much needed additional space and facilities for schools, increased online resources and additional outreach. This comes at a crucial time for marine wildlife which is increasingly under threat. We want to inform and inspire people about Scotland’s amazing marine wildlife and highlight the need to look after it for future generations. It has been a year of research, surveys and collaboration to ensure that we deliver a Centre that builds on the experience of the Seabird team and the success of the Seabird Centre, showcasing work across Scotland as well as signposting to other attractions and locations.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our work.
