Welcome and update from David Windmill, Chairman

......................................................

We are very grateful to all of those who have supported the Seabird Centre in the past year, whether as donors, visitors, members or volunteers. With your help we have been able to continue delivering and expanding our important work in the fields of conservation and education. At the heart of all we do is our mission to inspire and educate people to care for wildlife and the natural environment. Our practical conservation work includes the volunteer-led project, SOS Puffin, which is making a big impact on the invasive species that threatens local puffin populations on the islands of Craigleith and Fidra. We have also worked with the Great Nurdle Hunt and Surfers Against Sewage, helping Law Primary School win their John Muir Award and creating wildlife ambassadors for the future. We delivered a number of popular events, exhibitions and activities including our second annual Puffin Fest, launched by BBC personality Euan McIlwraith. We have continued to work hard to share and communicate all that we are doing through our ongoing marketing and PR. Our new website is live and we enjoy engaging and interacting with supporters via our social media platforms.

Our Curriculum-linked education programme, Seaside School, makes full use of our attractive outdoor learning environment. A new initiative in 2015 was our Junior Tour Guide programme, the result of a partnership between Illuminate UK and Law Primary School. We are pleased to see the impact this innovative project is having; the young tour guides are growing in confidence and enjoying the opportunity to share their learning with their peers. The past year has been one of partnerships. We have worked with a number of local organisations, including the Coastal Communities Museum and the North Berwick Lobster Hatchery, plus North Berwick Business Association, East Lothian Tourism Attraction Group and the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions. The trading side of our operations is crucial to supporting the work of the charity. Our cafĂŠ, gift shop and boat trips have remained successful despite the challenges of changing seasons and unpredictable weather. In the past year we launched a new Forth Ferry route to/ from Anstruther, which proved popular. We were particularly pleased to read the good reviews of staff and volunteers, especially those working to engage visitors of all ages in the Discovery Centre. Their enthusiasm has helped create more ambassadors for wildlife and the environment. Throughout the coming months we will continue to focus on providing a first class visitor attraction, wildlife charity, education centre and community resource. At the same time we will be progressing our exciting plans for the future: the National Marine Centre. Our plans are developing thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and others. We are now working on raising the funds needed to ensure that the idea of a National Marine Centre becomes reality. Thank you to everyone who has supported the work of the charity and made these achievements possible.
