Tips When Using a Fuel Pump

fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you

• Choose a fuel pump that is closer to the store and in direct view of the attendant. These pumps are less likely to be targets for skimmers.

• Run your debit card as a credit card. If that’s not an option, cover the keypad when you enter your PIN.

• Consider paying inside with the attendant, not outside at the pump.

Linn Campbell: 3681 Gloxinia Dr.

I’ve lived here in Sabal Springs for almost three years. I'm originally from a suburban town outside of Chicago, from there I moved to California. I lived as far north as Monterey and as far south as Temecula. I then moved to Texas and lived outside of Dallas in the town of Grapevine.

I went to high school and nursing school in the Chicagoland area —Proviso West and Presbyterian St. Luke’s. I practiced at St. Luke’s and Loyola in surgery, research, and ran the open-heart machine.

When I moved to California, I worked for Jenny Craig, Cigarettes Cheaper, and Advance America, overseeing anywhere from 15 to 25 locations at a time. I was responsible for budgets, training, staffing, and dayto-day business at these locations. I was very successful at each of these businesses — bottom-line earnings, year over year, always exceeded the budget.

Because of my experience in business and nursing, I know I will be able to keep Sabal Springs an outstanding place to live. My goal is to keep our community safe, to have information easily available, and to keep Sabal Springs maintained.

For the past couple of years, as co-chair, along with others, I set up and helped run the Emergency Preparedness Committee. We put out a trifold with lifesaving information, set up and ran hurricane procedures when faced with a storm, made a partnership with the North Fort Myers Fire Department (NFMFD) to hold training classes for the community and set up our annual toy drive.

In the past year, I also served as the chair for the Communications Committee, and we started training classes on the new portal working closely with GeorgeAnn to set up the content and frequency of the training sessions. We are currently working on training for the voting process with Ron Czarnik to help and assist all residents when needed.

Kathy Kwaak: 3802 Sabal Springs Blvd.

I have served as vice president on the Sable Springs Board in 2023/2024, acting as a liaison for several committees, including Library, Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC), ARC, Signage, Decorating, Gatehouse, and Landscaping. For the EPC, I was a cofounder and assisted the committee to bring AED training and safety programs to Sabal Springs. I also supported numerous Sabal Springs committee activities, events and workshops, including two successful toy drives in conjunction with the North Fort Myers Fire Department. I am available to assist residents and other board members on issues facing our community.

My goals for 2025/2026 are to further improve and grow Sabal Springs emergency preparedness, continue to offer positive support to unify and grow our community, formulate a visionary/strategy committee, and encourage residents to be involved in our community and activities.

From 2004 to 2014, while at the Texas Pulmonary and Critical Care Consultants, I established a Center of Excellence for FDA-sponsored clinical trials for leadingedge pulmonary medications. From 1991to 2004, I was a charge nurse and later a nurse manager at Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

I’ve been married to Peter Kwaak for 31 years. Together we have a blended family with five adult children, 12 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

William Rokosz: 17698 Acacia Dr.

I was born and raised in Springfield, Mass., and am a graduate of Cathedral High School. After high school, I joined the U.S. Army and served as a military police officer in Germany for three years and received an honorable discharge in 1979. I then attended Holyoke Community College and Westfield State College, receiving a degree in criminal justice.

My career has been with the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years, 30 years as a mail handler in Massachusetts and 10 years as a letter carrier in Arcadia, Fl. During that time, I spent 21 years as a union representative, which included filing and settling grievance and preparing arbitration. I retired from the U.S. Postal Service in May 2023. I currently serve as an active member of the board of trustees for the state of Florida. I am also an active union representative for the U.S. Letter Carriers Union, negotiating for local agreements in Arcadia, Wachula, and Frostproof, Fl.

I also owned and operated four antique businesses for more than 25 years, and I still manage and operate one store in Massachusetts and an on-line store.

I currently serve on the ARC committee in Sabal

Springs as well as serve as chair of the tennis-pickleball committee.

My wife Moe and I have been married 19 years. We moved to Sabal Springs in 2016.

Earl Russell: 17761 Pineapple Palm Ct.

As a Viet Nam veteran, I made three tours aboard the USS King DLG-10 from 1965- 1968, receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, I served as an electronics technician fixing high frequency communications equipment, surface and air search radar, navigation equipment, and taught inertial navigation equipment support for two years.

I also worked in field engineering, customer field support, and management for 23 years covering four industries: military electronics; medical electronics (blood analyzers); micrographics (high speed camera systems for microfiche film); and personal computers (hardware and software).

While at Hycel, I was a field engineer, then promoted to regional manager. At Zenith Data Systems, I was a national service manager; at Standard Data Systems, I served as a director; for NEC Electronics, again in a director position. I served as vice president for Diagsoft, and as a vice president for Viewsonic. I worked as an IT consultant from 1992-2016, developing software for the Microsoft platform at Abbott Labs, Allstate, McDonalds; JBS Logistics, and Northern Trust.

I was a licensed real estate agent for three years in Illinois; I also served on the plan commission in Glendale Heights, IL, for three years.

Additionally, I’ve been a vocational instructor for microprocessors here in Florida.

I purchased my first property in Sabal Springs in 2014 and have been a permanent resident since 2017. In 2018, I served on the ARC Committee for one year, and have been a DOC committee member for seven years, since 2018. I served on the SSHOA board of directors as treasurer from 2021 to 2022.

Rick Stamper: 3687 Sabal Springs

I moved to Sabal Springs after retiring from residential and commercial real estate sales in Northeast Ohio. During 15 years in real estate, I served consecutive years on the Portage County Association of Realtors as a director, treasurer, vice president, and president. As a realtor, I, dealt with contracts and negotiations on a regular basis. I owned a freight expediting company that serviced the 48 contiguous states and parts of Canada. This involved time sensitive pickup and delivery of critical shipments; we were also subcontracted by FEMA to work relief for

Hurricanes Charlie and Katrina.

As an entrepreneur, I started and operated a NAPA auto parts store dealing with all the related managerial responsibilities. After being recognized for my troubleshooting abilities, I was elected to the National Advertising Committee for NAPA. I also worked 12 years in food service sales with Sysco Foodservice.

I’ve been married to my wife, Patti for 20 years, and together we have five children and 10 grandchildren.

As a board member, I actively assisted residents with the Xfinity fiber installation; helped homeowners to finally get the board to address the lakes being overtaken with weeds; voted against accepting a golf cart contract without getting more bids, resulting in saving the community about $18,000; worked with the contract review committee to help find a new landscape company; and I was the only board member to address the so-called homeless person who was sleeping in driveways last year.

Thomas Triptow: 3760 Schefflera Dr.

I’ve been a resident of Sabal Springs for eight-plus years. My agenda is simple: transparency, continuity, consistency, manage cost-effective growth, rebuild amenities, and help foster new ideas to minimize any future increases of our maintenance fees.

The things I am most proud of in my personal life are my family. I have been married to my wife Sherry for so many years and we have an amazing son Chad. He and his wife Amy have blessed us with our grandson, Jacob. I pride myself on being a Christian, a family man, an honest businessman, and always strive to be a good person. I’d also like to be a 6-handicap golfer, but that might prove to be a challenge.

In 2024-2025, I served as a Sabal Springs HOA board of director, currently as treasurer. I have sincerely enjoyed working with the BOD and our community to come up with realistic solutions to our financial needs. While on the board, I have aimed to make commonsense decisions focused on considering the needs of all parties involved and the community.

In 2002-2023, I founded and built-up On Site Alignment, which is now successfully being directed by my son Chad. For just about all of my adult life, I have been responsible for business management with a focus on not only sales but the responsibility to create a profit.

BLOCK CAPTAINS NEEDED

Every resident of Sabal Springs who was HOME and OK after Hurricane Milton last fall probably knows who their Block Captain is. The community was awash with volunteers in bright yellow vests for which we have heard many thanks and praises. However, the Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) considers Milton a “trial run” because we were so fortunate to be barely grazed. One thing we learned is that we need more volunteers, especially as Block Captains. This is a call for folks to get involved. So please read about the position and consider helping out.

BLOCK CAPTAIN JOB DESCRIPTION

: A Block Captain is a neighborhood leader who works to make their block safe and to keep residents informed and involved. In the event of a disaster, Block Captains are responsible for checking on neighbors, especially those with special needs, and gathering information to share with the EPC and first responders.

Blocks consist of roughly 30 homes in close proximity and there are only a few “special needs” homes in each, as identified previously. The EPC provides a hierarchy of “Area Captains” to assist with assignments whenever needed.

When the Sabal Springs’ Board of Directors declares that a hurricane is imminent, Block Captains would assure that all the residents who intend to stay during the emergency secure a “HOME” sign and afterward that it is switched to “OK” or assistance is rendered.

A Block Captain’s primary duty is to reach out to residents in the homes where we do NOT yet have survey results or contact NEW residents to engage those folks in the workings of our committee and community. Also, there may be a need to call or visit your neighbors who have not provided vital information to ask them to voluntarily fill out a survey for their own safety. Other duties could include conveying important information that is disseminated via e-blast to residents who don’t have email access.

If you have a desire to meet and/or assist your neighbors, please call Donna Milbee at 317-979-0229 or any member of the EPC.

ABOVE AND BEYOND — THE RAVIN DREAM TEAM

In our continuing series of those in Sabal Springs who go above and beyond for our community, this month we feature Gary and Emily Ravin.

Gary has spent pretty much his whole career in construction and carpentry. He spent 20 years working within the McDonalds’ family of restaurants building, maintaining, and remodeling their restaurants. After that he owned an inspection company and a mold abatement company in his native Michigan.

Gary has served on the maintenance committee here in Sabal Springs and bravely took the lead on the mold remediation project for our clubhouse. He saved us thousands of dollars by doing a big chunk of the work himself with no compensation. His expertise and experience in the field were invaluable during the very stressful and complex process of getting our Clubhouse reopened and safe for our residents. Without him, the project no doubt would have cost much more money and may not have been done as well as it was.

He also has been a knowledgeable and professional guide for our Board when dealing with any type of construction or maintenance issues. His background and experience are assets to Sabal Springs.

Emily owns a corporation for insurance marketing. Over the years she has had agents in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. She also had a business working with Canadian pharmacies.

Emily oversees our entertainment committee. From Nite at the Races to the Senior Prom, to concerts and dances and picnics and more, Emily is the dynamo bringing great entertainment and fun to the residents of Sabal Springs. She started out as a committee member

and took the reins as the lead about three years ago. Some of her favorite events that she and her team have put on are the Annual Chili Cookoff and last year’s Memorial Day picnic, which had well more than 300 people in attendance. She and her team have several great events coming up, including a Murder Mystery Night, Nite at the Races, and a Drive-in Movie night. In addition, she just announced that for the first time, events will continue through the summer months. The only month with no planned events is September, due to prime hurricane season. In the future, Emily also would like to plan some off-site excursions for our residents.

Gary and Emily have owned a home here in Sabal Springs for almost 10 years. What brought them to our community? Several years ago, they were having lunch at Anthony’s on the Boulevard in Cape Coral, while living in Coral Lakes. Another diner at Anthony’s asked if they had been to Anthony’s on the Green, which at the time, was our restaurant here in Sabal. They came here one day and had so much fun that they started hanging out at the restaurant more frequently and finally decided they just had to buy in here. A few years later, their friends of 40 years, Maddie and Dennis Jennings moved in as well.

Gary and Emily have been married for 15 years. They were introduced by Gary’s niece who owned a deli and thought the two of them would hit it off. They were married on New Year’s

Eve 2009. Between them they have raised six children and are now the proud grandparents of 18 and even prouder great grandparents of 11! They spend about seven to eight months a year here in Sabal Springs and the rest of the year at their condo in Lake Huron, Michigan, where they spend time with family and watch 1,000-foot freighters travel along the river on their way to various ports between the U.S. and Canada.

I think it’s safe to say that Gary’s niece was right, they do make a dream team and we are so lucky to have them as part of our Sabal Springs family. Thank you, Gary and Emily for all that you do for your fellow neighbors and friends.

Gary & Emily Ravin

SABAL SPRINGS A&C JANUARY

LUNCHEON

On Jan. 7, 2025, the A&C group met for lunch was provided by The Lake House Restaurant. We were served a buffet of baked potatoes, chili, broccoli cheddar soup and salad fixings, butter with rolls, dessert and beverages.

Jeanine Clapp read the day’s trivia featuring interesting facts about Elvis Presley, commemorating his 90th birthday, Jan. 8, 1935.

Linda Voto announced that Sheri Weitner will be the new treasure for our group. Mary Ann Baillargeon gave the secretary report for December, which was accepted by Phyllis Sandler and seconded by Marci Clark.

The group celebrated five birthdays and the anniversary of Cheryl Taylor, who celebrated 59 years.

Our Princess of Comedy, Pat Baker, treated us to some advice on New Year’s resolutions regarding diet and exercise. We’re so glad to have Pat back and putting a smile on our faces.

Linda reminded us of the date change for the Fashion Show, which is now on March 9. If anyone needs a donation letter for the fashion show, Pat will have it available on her porch. She also reminded the group about the Valentine’s Day wreath making class on Jan. 24, at 12 pm, be sure to sign up.

Debbie Collins discussed the Trash and Treasure Sale coming up on Feb. 1. There will also be a bake sale and a 50-50 raffle on Friday and Saturday.

Janice Smith brought in two quilts — one was a beautiful wedding ring pattern, which started out as a wedding gift for her grandson, but she decided to keep it as a memento of her and her husband Colin’s 40th wedding anniversary. Janice spent her summer making this quilt. The other was a handmade quilt made by her Great, Great, Grandmother, who pioneered to South Dakota. Janice reminded us that Sabal Springs has quilting, knitting, crocheting, and

sewing groups available to residents and encouraged us to join.

The meeting ended with a raffle and 50-50 drawings.

THE EMERGENCY PREPARDEDNESS COMMITTEE UPDATE

Wow, 2025 marks the end of the first quarter of this century.

I want to share with the community some of the goals for this year from the Emergency Preparedness Committee: Mike Temme, Linn Campbell, Kathy Kwaak, Gene Campbell, John Cocca, Pat Convery, Sharon Hunt, Peter Kwaak, Rich Manning, and Linda Pechstein.

We once again want to work hand in hand with the North Fort Myers Fire Department (NFMFD). We will be offering as many classes as we can throughout the year that NFMFD makes available to us. For example, there will be sessions on Stop the Bleed, AED, Fire Extinguishers, and more. If there’s something you would like to see please let us know, we’d be glad to hear from you. Please check e-blasts, the Breeze, and bulletin boards during the year for more information and dates.

We did well last year and avoided being hit with any major hurricane damage, and our committee a chance to do a run through, which we feel went quite well. We will be looking at our progress and of course evaluating to see if we need any improvements, and of course being present to help our neighbors at any time of the year in case of an emergency.
