{ tips & trends } what’s new and suggestions to make your big day the best ever
tom & chelsey, rockport, ma. photo by: eric mccallister photography
by Debbie Kane
Technology is changing weddings plus more advice and trends from our advisory panel
tip: Honesty is the Best Policy with Wedding Vendors It seems obvious, but the best way to work with the myriad people who help coordinate your big day is to be honest about your budget and your vision for your wedding. Kate Parker of Kate Parker Designs, Dover, NH, a wedding planner and florist, says be upfront. Immediately. “Be clear about your budget and tell your vendor up front,” she recommends. “Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to talk about it. I don’t want to offer something you can’t afford, so tell me first.” Research what things cost by calling different vendors, then create your budget. trend: Pull It Together with Wedding Apps New mobile apps make it easy to plan your wedding and organize photos. Wedding Snap allows you to instantly download your guests’ candid shots or videos to a unique site so that everyone can enjoy that shot of the first dance or bite of cake (images can even be downloaded and shown in real time on a big screen at your reception). Appy Couple lets you build your own website (and app); you can keep your wedding guests informed of your plans and share details about your gift registry, honeymoon and much more. Giving your guests an Instagram hashtag for your wedding enables them to put their candid photos in one place as well.
tIP: Stop Photo Bombing! You and your new husband have just turned to walk down the aisle after a perfect wedding ceremony. Suddenly your uncle steps into the aisle to take a photo with his cellphone. You’ve been photo bombed! “I’ve seen grandma in the first row of the ceremony taking pictures with her Ipad,” says Kiersten Mayes, catering sales director at Wentworth by the Sea Country Club, Rye, NH. Ask your officiant to say a few words to guests before the ceremony, post a sign at the ceremony or reception site, or add a note in your wedding program kindly requesting that they turn off cell phones and Ipads. Technology is here to stay, but it’s important to know when to use it and when to turn it off. tREND: The Unplugged Wedding With the increase of photo bombing comes more “unplugged” weddings. Technology can be both fun and a nuisance. Couples have gone to considerable effort–and money–to hire a professional photographer to capture great moments throughout the wedding. “We have to shoot around people taking pictures with their phones or Ipads all the time,” says Eric McCallister of McCallister Photography in Portsmouth, NH. Tell your guests to put down their mobile devices. When you turn to face the crowd after the ceremony, you’ll see people’s happy faces, not their cell phone screens. sw 15
{ t i ps & t r e nds }
trend: Add Flourish to Invitations with Calligraphy Calligraphy is timeless and adds a uniquely personal touch to your wedding invitations, menus, place cards and more. A wide variety of lettering styles are available, as well as different colored inks and motifs that can create a story and add personality. “Calligraphy is lovely because someone is using their skill and time to create something personal for you and your guests,” says Samantha Finigan, owner of Gus & Ruby Letterpress in Portsmouth, NH. “It’s a trend that’s never gone out of style.”
{Calligraphy adds elegance and a personal touch to wedding invitations, programs, menus, place cards and more.}
tip: Coordinate the Groom and Groomsmen’s Attire After the wedding dress, bridesmaids’ dresses may be one of the most important clothing choices you make. But, says Julia Irace of Andrea’s Bridal in Portland, ME, the women in the wedding party aren’t the only ones whose outfits should be considered. “It’s important to know what color the groomsmen are wearing,” she says. “Many brides haven’t thought about what the men are going to wear.” Select your color palette first and then work with the guys’ attire. Whether it’s a tuxedo or a suit, grooms and groomsmen can add details like ties, bow ties or even socks that complement the color scheme you choose.
{From ties to socks to boutonierres, coordinate groomsmen’s attire with your overall color pallette.}

{ t i ps & t r e nds }
trend: Naturally-Inspired Wedding Bouquets Succulents (yes, the family of plants that includes cactus) are one of the year’s most popular additions to bridal bouquets as well as wedding decor. “The vintage look is very popular now and succulents in sage green, dusty rose or silvery purple are a nice complement,” says Jessica Christoferson of Cymbidium Floral in Exeter, NH. Christoferson uses succulents like echeveria and air plants as accent flowers; both are hardy and can be used year-round. Best of all, because it’s a plant cutting, the succulent can be re-planted after your wedding to create a unique memory of your day.
{Succulents add instant natural beauty and character to traditional floral bouquets.}
tREND: Tables and Chairs As Part of Wedding Décor Taking a seat has never presented so many options. Unique tables and chairs can make your ceremony and reception more fun and interesting. “You can really show your personality through the tables and chairs you choose,” says Allison Pangakis, event coordinator for New England Country Rentals, Scituate, MA. Mix up table shapes and styles at the reception, from round to square and rectangular. An ornate Louis IV chair, a wooden cross back chair, even Adirondack chairs, can be focal points during your celebration or incorporated into a wedding lounge where guests can relax before or during the reception.
{Unique chairs, couches and custom seating, from rustic to modern, add visual personality to your special event.}
sw 18
sw 19
{ t i ps & t r e nds }
trend: Cakes, Cake Stands and Tables Make Delicious Visual Additions Another design trend is to make your wedding cake, as well as its stand and table, part of your overall design scheme. “I really encourage couples to make the wedding cake part of the whole table décor,” says Jenny Williamson of Jenny’s Wedding Cakes in Amesbury, MA. Consider the look and feel of your reception, from the menu, to your linens to flowers. For example, for a rustic-themed wedding, Williamson used tree stumps, cut into smaller “slices,” to act as wedding cake stands, grouping several on a table. She also uses silver cake stands, or creates platforms, to arrange individual cakes and create height; texture is added to the table with fabric and she’s even added details like a candelabra for visual interest.
{Your wedding cake is front and center, and presentation is key. Stands are an extension of your overall design scheme.}
trend: Buddymooning Destination weddings combine celebration with a chance to get away so it’s logical that couples want to include family and friends in their post-nuptial getaways, sometimes called “buddymooning.” According to Linda Bucknam, owner of TravLBudi in Bow, NH, many brides and grooms planning destination weddings want to make it a vacation for themselves, their families and their friends. “Lots of people figure they’re flying to a destination wedding, why not make it a vacation,” she says. “Some families make it a reunion.” Many resorts, especially in the Caribbean, where Bucknam books most destination weddings, make it worthwhile for couples, with special packages including deals on rooms, transportation, meals and extras. Lock in your wedding date – and perhaps get a better deal – by making travel arrangements six months to a year in advance.

{unique venues Q&A}
{ unique wedding venues } your questions answered
Tanya & abe’s maine lakeside wedding. Photo By: Kate crabtree photography
by Cheryl Kimball
Wedding venues are as varied as the celebrations themselves. Our experts share their thoughts.
Q We want to have our wedding at an outdoor park. Are there any special things to consider with a venue that is a public space? When you choose a public place for your A wedding, you need to think deeper than you might otherwise. What you envision may not end up reality. For example, I recently did a wedding in Prescott Park in Portsmouth, which is an absolutely gorgeous venue. But it’s also very public, and there are lots of passersby, onlookers, even people playing whiffle ball. A beach can be a great spot for a wedding, but you’ll probably end up with a lot of strangers taking your photo, and maybe even a tattooed guy in a Speedo hanging around for your nuptials! A lakeside wedding I shot was at a beautiful private venue—which happened to be adjacent to a public dock. By the time we took portraits, there were a couple guys who’d been having fun all afternoon and made an alcohol-influenced decision to plunge cannonball style off the dock at an intimate moment between the bride and groom at sunset (in their
defense, they offered the groom $100 earlier for a photo with his bride, which I graciously declined on their behalf). Unusual sites also can pose logistical challenges, which may not be issues at all if you think about all angles beforehand. One couple spent so much effort and money getting bathroom trailers to a site that they decided to get a shot of them each coming out of the trailers. The bathrooms were such a hassle they had to commemorate them with an official photograph. They told me, “We will forget a lot of things about our wedding, but the bathrooms won’t be one of them!” The positives of a unique venue almost always outweigh the negatives, and your photographer is likely to love you for doing something different and unique. But think it through completely or consider hiring a planner to help you think through the logistics. eric mccallister, Eric McCallister Photography, Portsmouth, NH 603.733.4575

{unique venues Q&A}
Q A traditional church setting for our wedding doesn’t suit us. We’re looking for a unique venue. What should we be thinking about when choosing a site? There are lots of things to think about! I assume you’re planning A to do both a ceremony and reception at the unique site. Depending upon the time of year, is there heat available? Is your caterer cooking out of a tent? Are there bathroom facilities that can accommodate the number of guests you’re planning for? What are the grounds like – can your 90-year-old great grandmother make it from her car to the ceremony safely?
{Be it beachside, field or garden, logistics matter in outdoor venues… manage the details.}
Heat can be arranged in most settings, power can be provided to the caterer’s tent by bringing in a generator, port-a-john choices range from basic to pretty elaborate, and great grandma can be brought to her seat in a golf cart. The point is, anything can be done but there’s typically a cost associated with it. You also have to think of these non-romantic issues when choosing your unique venue. Embrace where you are and find the balance. It’s not just about the beautiful barn—how is the trash going to be dealt with? Be sure you’re okay with bringing in the resources needed to make it work. kate martin, event planner, Beautiful Days, South Berwick, ME 207.384.4703

{unique venues Q&A}
My fiancé and I would like to marry on board a boat. What should we think about ahead of time? Q
A Marrying on board can have its challenges but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. The nautical theme is a great one for weddings. And Coast Guard-licensed captains have authority to marry, so your officiant might be built in! The mobility of the boat setting means that you have any number of choices for the backdrop for your ceremony—on our gundalow the Piscataqua, for instance, you can be married with anything from the brick downtown of Portsmouth to tree-surrounded Great Bay to one of several boat-studded marinas in the background.
{Boats, boats, boats…so many options from ship to shore.}
Keep in mind that it’s often cooler out on the water than on shore and definitely while underway, so you and your guests should prepare for that with plenty of layers of clothing or warm blanket throws available to stay warm. Inclement weather is always a concern for outdoor venues and no less so for one on a boat. Despite these considerations, a wedding aboard a boat like our gundalow is a very special experience. daisy wilson, The Gundalow Company, Portsmouth, NH 603.433.9505
Q My fiancé and I are having a July wedding. The reception is at a nearby country club, but we’re having the ceremony mid-afternoon on a grassy knoll at our favorite beach. What should I think about for a ceremony on the beach? The beach venue just for the ceremony isn’t as complicated as having A the reception at the beach as well. But as romantic as it is to get married on the beach, there are still unromantic details and logistics to consider: parking, accessibility, permitting, restrooms, the general public being sw 35
sw 36
{unique venues Q&A}
{Tie the knot in the midst of one of the Northeast’s most alluring settings…seaside.}
“around.” A seaside ceremony can be windy and the surf can muffle ceremony vows – do you want to consider a public-address system? If so, will you need electricity or one that’s battery powered? If it’s hot out you may want to consider providing colorful paper parasols or fans. And be sure to give your wedding guests a bit of guidance on attire! Flip flops or bare feet are welcome!
{Outdoor receptions are alluring—plan for unpredictable elements.}
Heat is a big consideration in your choice of flowers for an outdoor mid-summer wedding, whether it’s beachside or lakeside. Certain flowers hold up better than others—if you’re set on hydrangeas, for instance, use those in the air-conditioned reception venue but not outside. If you’re thinking about decorating chairs at the outside of each row with flowers, hand-tied bouquets look beautiful but wilt quickly in the hot sun. Consider kissing balls and pomanders instead; with their own oasis source, they don’t have to be set in containers so they still provide that magical feel. kate martin, event planner, Beautiful Days, South Berwick, ME 207.384.4703 Betsy scott, The Flower Kiosk, Portsmouth, NH 603.436.1234

oastal Maine was the inspiration behind Allison D’Eugenio and John Rapaport’s intimate wedding on a warm summer day in York, Maine. After an early afternoon ceremony at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, guests were treated to an hour-long ocean cruise out of Ogunquit while Allison and John relaxed and had their photos taken. Before getting on board, guests received boat bags, custom made by Kate Martin of Beautiful Days, and containing such key survival items as sunglasses, flip flops (sized by guest), Champagne, bottles of water, even whoopie pies. Later, guests made their way by trolley to the York Harbor Reading Room, where festive lanterns and soft light greeted them for cocktails on the deck, dinner and dancing. • by Debbie Kane photography by Brea McDonald photography

ate and Aqil’s wedding not only melded two different cultures and two different families, it was coordinated from multiple countries. Originally from Portsmouth, NH, Kate, who is of Irish ancestry and raised in the Jewish faith, met Aqil, who is from England and of Indian ancestry, during a trip to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. They were engaged five years later at “the spot,” a place special to Kate’s family on the New Hampshire Seacoast. Respecting each of their religious and cultural backgrounds, the couple had two different weddings: a traditional Indian wedding in London, organized by Aqil’s parents; and a second wedding hosted by Kate’s family in Portsmouth. All of this happened while Kate and Aqil lived in London, then moved —Kate to Singapore briefly and Aqil to Dubai—where they live together now. The Portsmouth wedding incorporated cultural touches from each family, including a huppah made with cloth from Aqil’s family’s ancestral village in East Africa and Irish dance music at the rehearsal dinner. “My family loved seeing Aqil’s traditions and his family loved the New England culture,” says Kate. • by Debbie Kane photography by shane’s wedding photography

Planning a wedding sometimes means planning for the unexpected. Sarah Shenton and Frank Salfi’s wedding day dawned sunny and bright. The couple, who met while students at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, wanted to get married in midcoast Maine, where Sarah’s family had a summer home in South Bristol. The couple’s ceremony was scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle, ME. Except that the school buses Sarah hired to take the wedding parties to the church didn’t show up. “The guests were already there,” she says. “We got there an hour late.” Despite the snafu, the ceremony, held outdoors in the woods right near the church, was beautiful. Guests headed over to the reception in South Bristol, held in the pasture of a small farm belonging to a family friend, overlooking a cove. The wedding party arrived by boat. Later, friends surprised the couple with a fireworks display and everyone enjoyed music and dancing well into the night. “Everyone had a fantastic time,” says Sarah. “It was really fun.” • by Debbie Kane photography by Kim chapman photography

atie knew once she met Mark that he was someone special. The couple met through friends the weekend after Thanksgiving. “He and I really hit it off but I didn’t think anything would come of it because he lived in New Orleans,” Katie notes. Chemistry, however, triumphed over logistics. The couple went on their first date when Mark came home for Christmas. That February, he quit his job down South and moved back to the Boston area. Three years later, he proposed on Christmas morning. Katie, a self-professed planner who loves Christmas, says “I had even booked the time for him to do it!” True to form, Katie planned their Cape Cod wedding, from finding school buses to ferry guests to setting up a candy bar to enjoy after dinner. bbi and Shawn’s wedding was an ode to the city they love: Portland. Nearly everything, from their ceremony and reception to their wedding rings, was held or purchased in Maine’s largest city. “We knew we wanted to be married downtown and do as much as possible to support local businesses and the community that nurtured our relationship,” says Abbi. Almost the entire event happened at various locations on Congress Street, the main thoroughfare through downtown Portland. The couple, who met on a blind date, used Springer’s Jewelers (the owners were Shawn’s former neighbors) to design their engagement and wedding rings. The rehearsal dinner was at Bar Lola, a Portland eatery. The wedding ceremony was at the First Parish Portland Unitarian Universalist church, near the Old Port. Since the couple are self-described foodies, they wanted to make sure their guests enjoyed good food in a great atmosphere. So they hosted a gluten-free dinner and reception at Local 188.“We totally, absolutely love Portland,” says Abbi. “We didn’t want to go anywhere else.” • by Debbie Kane photography by nadra photography

mini-destination wedding on Star Island, off the coast of Portsmouth, NH was a perfect opportunity for a 24-hour wedding celebration for Nicole, Martin, their families and friends. Introduced through friends, the couple discovered the rocky island on one of their first dates. Later, when Martin proposed to Nicole on a cold January day at Seapoint Beach in Kittery, ME, Star Island was visible in the distance. It seemed like the natural choice for their fall wedding. Guests and family steamed over to Star Island on the Thomas Leighton the morning of the wedding. “We had a progressive wedding,” says Nicole. The ceremony was held during late afternoon on the back side of the island, at a special spot overlooking the White Island lighthouse. Guests then toasted the newlyweds with Champagne and enjoyed dinner in the conference center. Afterwards, everyone danced through the evening. The next morning, Nicole and Martin enjoyed a buffet breakfast with friends and family before heading back to the mainland. • by Debbie Kane photography by eric mccallister photography

osting a wedding on Friday the 13th didn’t deter Jessica and Michael from having an event that family and friends could enjoy. The couple met on MySpace, when Jessica was a student at the University of New Hampshire and Michael lived in Los Angeles. Michael eventually moved to Portsmouth and they dated for 3 ½ years. He proposed to Jessica one evening as she folded laundry. The couple’s luck held out on their wedding day. Heavy rain fell just as their outdoor wedding ceremony at Great Island Common in New Castle, NH, ended. Thanks to creative thinking by their photographers, Mon Petit Studios, wedding photos weren’t ruined by the weather. One alternative: photos of the wedding party taken in front of a downtown Portsmouth mural of a shark. The evening ended informally with drinks, snacks and dancing at The Thirsty Moose in Portsmouth. Friends and co-workers, asked to wear business attire, gathered to celebrate with the couple, who still wore their wedding clothes. “I wanted people to have a good time without worrying about being formal,” says Jessica. In the end, their luck held. • by Debbie Kane photography by Mon petit studio

{a} Known to family and friends by their joint nickname, “Dellie,” Ellie and Darren’s wedding was as cheerful and easy-going as they are. {b} Ellie gave each of her 8 attendants a nickname signifying what they meant to her (for example, “Maid of Free-Spiritedness and Strong Will”). Darren did the same with the groomsmen. {c} Instead of wedding cake, Ellie and Darren had a first “scoop” at their ice cream bar. {d} and {i} Pedal Pushers Floral Studio supplied Ellie’s bouquet and ceremony flowers. {e} Ellie’s gown is from Kleinfeld’s in New York; her wedding veil belonged to her mother. {f} A young guest smiles for the camera. {g} A heart-shaped stone spells out the couple’s wedding date. {h} Ellie’s white Anne Klein pumps are from DSW.

llie says it’s destiny that she and husband Darren met. They met at a birthday party, just a couple hours after Ellie had described her ideal mate to girlfriends over dinner. “It was the right fit from the beginning,” she says. Darren proposed 3 ½ years later in New York’s Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, on his birthday. The couple, known as “Dellie” to friends and family, wanted a wedding celebration as easygoing as their relationship that involved as many loved ones as possible. Personal touches included: a rehearsal dinner featuring New York-style deli food, a tribute to New York and their nickname; the ceremony at St. John the Evangelist Church in Wellesley, MA, where everyone on Ellie’s side of the family was married; heart-shaped rocks collected by Ellie’s mom and inscribed by her to use as place cards; and the the couple’s “first scoop” from a multi-flavored ice cream bar, instead of a traditional wedding cake. Together with dinner and dancing into the wee hours, the couple ended up creating the right vibe of easy-going fun and carefree delight. • by Debbie Kane photography by Kate preftakes photography

innie and Tom share a passion for gardening, working the land, careers as biologists and a healthy sense of humor that revealed itself in many details of their wedding celebration. The couple met in a college biology class. After dating for 1 ½ years, Tom proposed to Winnie; she eventually moved into Tom’s Massachusetts’ home. They decided to have their ceremony and reception at their home. Showing their love of mathematics, the couple incorporated some clever math clues into their celebration. The time of their ceremony, 3:14 p.m., is the mathematical value of Pi. Favors and table cards had guests’ names on them along with table numbers written as mathematical constants (on the back was information on why the constant was significant and how it was used in real life). Winnie created the bouquets for herself and her maid of honor as well as boutonnierres for the men, from wildflowers grown in her garden. Cocktails were served in the meadow and the reception was held in a wooded, ivy-covered hollow. Guests received homemade hickory syrup from hickory trees on Tom and Winnie’s land. It was the perfect touch for a naturally beautiful day. • by Debbie Kane photography by mark davidson

ellow students at the University of New Hampshire, Christina and Robert used to ride the same shuttle bus from Dover to the Durham campus. Their paths crossed again a few weeks later when they were formally introduced through a mutual friend. They eventually got engaged Christmas Eve 2011 at Wagon Hill in Durham. Self-proclaimed “foodies,” the couple had heard of Grace, a Portland restaurant that they’d seen in an issue of Seacoast Weddings. The only venue they really considered, they knew it would be perfect for their wedding ceremony and reception. Housed in a former church, Grace has a community room on the first floor and an upstairs dining room, making it an ideal site for weddings and celebrations. Both skiers, Christina and Robert were undaunted by winter weather and set January 19 as their wedding date. The day was snowy but sunny and temperatures were in the low 40s (“We had to put my flowers in the car so they’d stay warm,” Christina says). Their vows were especially meaningful since the ceremony was performed by two friends who became licensed to marry them. • by Debbie Kane photography by kate mcelwee photography

{ the “perfect” wedding } beyond tried & true traditions
Molly & steve, Peaks Island, Me. Photo By: rachel bell photography
by Cheryl Kimball
Couples are redefining wedding traditions. Learn more about what’s in and what’s out.
The “perfect” wedding. It’s a notion that’s changed over time, whether it’s the bride walking down the aisle of a big church, on the arm of her beaming father, or the groom glimpsing his blushing bride-to-be for the first time on their wedding day. But for a day that’s so steeped in tradition, many “tried and true” traditions have gone out of style only to be replaced by new ones developed by the couples themselves. What’s Out?
“No more garter belt throwing ever, ever, ever,” says wedding planner Kate Parker of Kate Parker Designs. “First, people don’t even wear them anymore. But even more important, you can end up with your 12-yearold nephew putting it on Aunt Sally. Same with the bouquet—no one wants to get up there and admit she’s single. And besides, this tradition really breaks up the party; people stop dancing and you have to gather people together. Once the party begins everyone should be partying the rest of the night.” Your Special Day
“More couples are open to including something that is truly of themselves,” says Kate Martin of Beautiful Days wedding planning. A special dance with just your girlfriends? A thank-you card at the table for your guests instead of a menu? “People get hung up on traditional stuff and forget that they’re there to
share of themselves,” Martin says. “Infuse your wedding with pieces of who you are. If you want to do a pie instead of a cake, do it!” The Great Giveaway
There are many different types of couples now so who accompanies whom down the aisle is a personal choice. It’s quite appropriate to decide based on your own unique family dynamics. Brides whose fathers are deceased often choose a brother to walk them down the aisle. Jewish tradition has long included both sets of parents. Feel free to make your own traditions for your wedding. “Do what’s comfortable for you,” says Parker. Consider whether your choice is going to offend someone you don’t want to offend—sometimes just sitting down with that person, explaining your choice and why it’s meaningful for you goes a long way to soothing hurt feelings. Sometimes, Parker says, you can help reduce awkwardness by simply having a couple cocktails while getting ready! Mothers of the bride and groom are also more involved in wedding planning, giving them an active role in the ceremony, says Martin. Walking with your mother and future mother-in-law down the aisle is one way to celebrate the important women in your life. sw 111

{Brides are creating, selecting—and paying for—their own engagement and wedding rings.}
Paying the Bill
Wedding costs are being borne now by couples. Whether it’s because they’ve been out of the parental home for several years or have a career well underway, many couples haven’t relied on their parents for financial support for a while. That doesn’t mean parents won’t enjoy paying for some special part of the wedding—say, a beautiful cake or the reception dinner. So put your own spin on long-held traditions—if you’re paying, you have the say in your wedding details! Another tradition-breaker: the engagement ring. Traditionally, prospective grooms pay for the engagement ring, presented at the proposal. Now brides may pay for a ring that they select and/or design. One gentleman on a recent Jeopardy! episode said he proposed to his now-wife with a candy ring knowing she wanted to choose her own engagement ring.
{“Something old, something new…” one tradition that hasn’t gone out of style.}
Something New
Something that has not changed is the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” a tradition, according to Parker, that’s “tried and true.” Friends and family often contribute in this case; for example, the bride wears a sapphire bracelet from her mom’s jewelry box, her girlfriend lends her the perfect hair clip.

A Proposal That’s a Work of Art Michael Behrmann’s proposal to Erika Peace on August 30, 2013, was a work of art. Literally. Behrmann worked with Born of Sound, a San Francisco company, to create an original art work—called a “sound form”—depicting his voice saying “Erika, will you marry me?” Behrmann then worked with staff at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH, to unveil the piece during a private “Love Tour” of the museum’s collections. When the tour guide called the couple’s attention to a new painting, Erika leaned in to read the artist’s name, and instead discovered Michael’s proposal. She said yes! The Portsmouth, NH, couple will wed in September 2014. In the meantime, the 20” x 40” blue image of their proposal now hangs in their living room, a masterpiece all their own. sw 128
