ABOUT ME My name is Yang Kai-Chien and I am Taiwanese. I graduated from the Department of Arts and Design of National Hsinchu University of Education, Taiwan. The university in which I studied provided a variety of lessons that related to art and design, such as oil painting, watercolor, sketch, graphic design, illustration, photography, product design, metal art, aesthetics, etc. I learned a lot about many interesting subjects, and enjoyed creating beautiful work. In my college life, I learned a lot of methods for the creation of art and design works, and tried to find a subject to be my career. Finally, I decided to engage in graphic design due to its motivating challenge, and gave me a sense of fulfillment. I learnt the basics of graphic design in university, including not only how to operate the software (photoshop, illustrator, indesign) but also how to make the layout clear and beautiful. After I graduated from university, I have work experience in 2 companies, a skin care products company and multimedia company. I made different graphic design layouts based on management specifications. In my opinion, working for a company enabled me to learn something I couldn’t learn from school, like how to communicate with clients. I like embroidery, and I established a handmade brand called “Fröhlich” to release my embroidery images and products. I use my graphic design skills to make posters to advertise my products. Then I discovered it was possible to combine handmade items and graphic design. From my perspective, if I use different elements, such as embroidery, collage, and graffiti, to express graphic design, the layout becomes more diversified. For example, if I use an embroidery font or border in the layout, it makes the design appear fresh and interesting to the public. Moreover, embroidery is a good way to highlight the illustration, thus enhancing the graphic design.

Fuxing Tea House Design project
HISTORY
Fuxing Village, Emei Township, Hsinchu County Fuxing village is the most populous village in Emei township. In the past, because the terrain of Fuxing village was almost flat and had a lot of natural resource, people started to clear a wild area for cultivation. “Fuxing” means fertile and thrive. This place abounds with tea and camphor. Fuxing tea house was established by the Tseng family. 130 years ago, Tseng family ancestors started to plant tea trees in Fuxing village to accumulate wealth gradually, then built a tea processing factory and sugar mill successively. Fuxing tea house is the first tea house to use modern machines to process the tea in Fuxing village. In the beginning, they processed Assam tea because at that juncture, Taiwanese tea was popular in the international market. Nowadays, Fuxing tea house manufactures Oriental beauty tea following the market trend. Furthermore, Fuxing tea house has a variety of cultural and historical resources that attract many scholars. Oriental beauty tea is vulgarly referred to as “Pon-Feng tea”, and is a complete fermentation, like black tea. Approximately 100 years ago, British business presented Oriental beauty tea to the Queen of England. She really liked this tea because the flavor has a fruit and honey fragrance. Tseng family’s descendant, Mr Tseng Cheng-Chang, decided to let the public visit the old tea house, hoping that more and more people could appreciate the local culture, and making the public more aware of the importance of cultural property.
MOTIVATION Fuxing tea house wants to expand to also become a local museum, so they need a new package and logo design that represents the Fuxing tea cultural museum. We decided to help Fuxing tea house design the package and logo. Because of the costs, Fuxing tea house requires us to design stickers that can stick directly on the tea caddy. Printing the sticker doesn’t cost a lot of money and they are easy to make. In the future, the tea made in Fuxing tea house will be classified and organised into 4 to 5 levels, so we decided to design different stickers to distinguish different levels of tea. Fuxing tea house has preserved some old wooden carvings that came from their old building. These wooden carvings have historical value and are really precious, so we think we can use the elements on the wooden carvings for our design. In these wooden carvings, there are a variety of oriental flowers and plants. We understood that traditional images are special and beautiful, so we decided to use the different flowers and plants to distinguish each level of tea. For the logo design, we sought a sign that could represent Fuxing old tea house. We observed that the window on the Tseng family’s old building was really special, something not seen in modern buildings. Finally, we decided to use the window’s image in the logo design. We hope that when visitors come to Fuxing tea cultural museum, they can enjoy and see the old building, letting more and more people value the traditional culture.
STICKER F o r the p a cka g e.
Different colours and images were used to design the package and classify different levels of tea.
According to the wooden carvings from the Tseng family’s old building, there were a variety of oriental flowers and plants that could be used to distinguish different levels of tea.
Using calligraphic lines to express the traditional images, associates the figure of Oriental beauty tea in the minds of the public.
LOGO
For the n e w l o ca l museum . The Tseng family’s old building near the Fuxing tea house, was built with red bricks. This old building was using traditional skills to built 130 years ago, and there is a window that looks like a flower. We thought this window perfectly represented Fuxing tea house and the Tseng family, so we decided to use the form of the window to design the logo.
The traditional window / Photographer: Yang Kai-Chien
First design draft: Use of Chinese painting style to express the traditional window.
The final design: The first character of Fuxing is 富 (Fu). This character is associated with a house, so we used “ 富 ” to represent the old building. The top radical( 宀 ) represents a roof, and the bottom half of the character( 田 ) to represent the traditional window.
