Energy Solace
Award-winning local artist Julia Clark has an exciting solo exhibition from 1st February at the South Downs YHA called Energy Solace. Julia explains ‘We wanted a title encapsulating the painting’s visual movement and energy, but also the place I mentally moved into whilst painting. Working on them has been a real solace.’ Invited to exhibit by YHA Artist in Residence Ashley Hyland, Julia said ‘This is a brand new collection of abstract paintings I’m very excited about!’ Julia will be hosting Meet the Artist days when prints and other items will be available for sale, including the opportunity to chat to Julia about her work and inspiration. Julia will also be running workshops in the Spring and be involved in events at the YHA during the summer.
Years of creative work and training have led Julia to a passion for mixed media art. Julia tries to create pieces that take the viewer somewhere that evoke memories of good experiences. ‘When possible I use recycled materials and don’t waste a scrap. Living by the coast and countryside, I’m so inspired by my surroundings. I’ve had amazing feedback from people receiving or just viewing my work. It’s a great mental lift to give and get this from my art. These paintings are a new direction that I have longed to take, encouraged by Ashley.

‘2019 was a great year artistically, with positive feedback, and lovely commissions. I was so excited for 2020. Unfortunately of course, my plans were scuppered by COVID and my mental health took a real dive. My husband encouraged me to claw back some creative time, it really made such a difference to me and how much I could support the family in return. It can’t be underestimated how much a positive impact creativity can have on wellbeing, whatever you do, sketching, doodling, painting.’ Throughout 2021 Julia worked to get her positive focus back, getting involved in the local artist community, joining the Seaford Art Club and connecting with other local artist groups who regularly exhibit. ‘I felt a bit like the fog had lifted, it was great to get inspiration and make new friends too.’
Alice Jackman, curator says: ‘Julia’s work is full of vibrancy and teeming with life. In an image one can feel the buzz of energy and the calmness of nature at play on the same canvas. Her use of colours is thoughtful and considered, in a way that makes for a beautiful piece of art.’
Julia’s artwork can be seen throughout February at the South Downs YHA on the A26. There is plenty of free parking, delicious refreshments and some beautiful countryside to explore at the same time.More details on the event and Julia’s online artwork can be viewed through https://linktr.ee/juliaclark.
