The Probus Club of Seaford
by Fran Tegg
At our most recent meeting our speaker was Adam Chugg, Town Clerk for Seaford Town Council.
Adam explained that, in essence, the Town Council works for the betterment of Seaford and its residents. They have responsibility for certain aspects of the built and natural environment, such as Seaford Head, Crouch Gardens, the Martello Museum and The Salts. The Town Council owns and maintains Seaford Head Golf Club and The View Restaurant. During Lockdown there was very little activity here, but since the end of the restrictions the Golf Club seems to be thriving, and currently they have more members than ever.

The Town Council works in conjunction with the Sussex Wildlife Trust to manage the nearby countryside, in respect of Wildlife Corridors, reduction in the use of chemicals, encouraging indigenous plants and increasing natural diversity. The Town Council represents the town, from a very local viewpoint.
Recently the Council has gone out to tender for a replacement toilet block, adjacent to the Martello Museum. They have recently completed the refurbishment of the Tennis Courts at the Salts, and have arranged for the cleaning of the War Memorial, showing respect for those named thereon. The Tree Planting programme continues, in association with local volunteers, in appropriate open spaces.
The Town Council wishes to develop the Seafront, but in such a way as not to destroy the basic character of the area. They will seek to balance the need to enhance the seafront concessions with the need to maintain the tranquillity of the area, and to maintain safety for all users. The Town Council will continue to encourage key events in the town centre, but not to excess. The Town Council’s long-term aim is ‘more of the same’. This year there will be a number of ‘Beacon’ events, celebrating Her Majesty’s Jubilee.
The Town Council is working with Historic England in investigations into the Iron Age Fort on Seaford Head, part of which was uncovered during a recent cliff fall. South Hill Barn has now been made waterproof in the expectation of greater use.
