SANCTUARY OF DISNEY’S UNLOVED

This project is an exploration into the “dark side” of Disney and to create a redemption for its forgotten victims.

Inspired by the Disney film Cinderella, in which Cinderella’s furry friends constructs a dress from the unwanted fabrics and beads deemed as “trash. With this dress the forgotten will attempt to outshine the “tyrant”, Disney.

THIRSTY PERCH 1974- 2020

Discovery Island was a tropical paradise; a nature preserve where guests could observe rare flora and fauna.

The new island was a haven for all kinds of animals including rare species and exotic birds like bald eagles and vultures.

However due to its remote location and isolation from the main disney attractions the number of visitors decreased over the years.

It was abandoned on April 8th 1999.

On 13 May 2017 youtuber Matt Sonswa travled to explore the abandoned discovery island and filmed a 59:48 min footage of the buildings and structure that now lie in ruins.

HISTORY OF DISCOVERY ISLAND 1974 Treasure Island

1986 Discovery Island

From the early 1900s it was known as Raz Island, named after the family that lived there.

In the late 1930s it was purchased for $800 by a man named Delmar “Radio Nick” Nicholson, who renamed the island “Idle Bay Isle” and lived there for 20 years with his wife and pet crane.

It was later purchased and renamed “Riles Island,” and used as a hunting retreat long before being bought by Disney.

On November 22nd 1963, Walt Disney took notice of the island during an aerial survey of central florida.

Disney later purchased the island and on April 8th 1974 “Treasure Island” opens to the public.

Disney slammed for leaving dozens of staff on their privately owned island Castaway Cay as Hurricane Dorian devastates the Bahamas -2nd September 2019

Disney have shaped the world of animation with films such as Snow White, Pinocchio and cinderella. These films have had global acclaim and generations have grown up influenced by the “magic” of Disney.

On 8th April 1999, Disney abandoned Discovery island, a Safari zoo containing exotic birds and animals. To date Disney have faced many allegations of abuse and mistreatment of its staff and animals.

Thus this project is an exploration into the “dark side” of Disney and to create a redemption for its forgotten victims. She had been living in her car for 7 years, parking near a gym that she frequented to wash up before going to work.

She was respected by her colleagues , living a simple life and was very private about her well being and personal life. Only two close friends knew the extent of her difficulties.

DISNEY’S FORGOTTEN VICTIMS The mistreatment and abused victims of Disney include, staff members and amusement park structures. These “treasures” will be brought together to construct a sanctuary for the forgotten.

RALLYING THE ABANDONED | DISNEY’S UNLOVED CHILDREN

REBEKAH PEDERSON

Rebekah Pederson, 27, works as a hairstyle artist at Disneyland, Anaheim. Rebekah earns 11.68/hour.

She was homeless for three and a half months, living in her car.

On November 30th 2016, she died of a heart attack in her car, clutching her keys, parked near the gym.

Failing to show up to work, Disney terminated her contract and requested for her uniform to be returned.

Her body was found 20 days later.

“MAKING A LOVELY DRESS FOR CINDERELLA” Various trimmings that Cinderella’s step sisters labeled as rags and trash are salvaged and constructed into a beautiful dress for cinderella for the royal ball.

I wanted to do something... something big... and i did it Simon Rodia

TOWERS OF SIMON RODIA Between 1921-1954, Simon Rodia constructed a collection of 17 structures. The tallest of the towers built is 99.5 feet.

Simon Rodia is an italian immigrant and works as a tile mason, spending his free time building the towers.

The towers/ sculptures were built with simple tools, without predetermined plans and entirely from scraps such as, broken pottery, tile and glass.

“GATHERING THE UNLOVED”

Abandoned items, fabrics, existing buildings and mistreated disney staff are gathered to construct a monument.

“SELF-BUILT MOBILE SHELTER” In response to the rising homeless amongst the Disney cast members, the mysterious” fairy godmother” prepares for a demonstration against disney and initiates a rally , providing them with a manual in home building.

KNITTING A NEW HOME

CLEANSING THEIR PAST

A large carpet unfolds, inviting the abandoned children into the structure.

As they carry their belongings with them through the entrance, they approach a large ball of yarn. Here they will feed their items feeds into the great ball of yarn and these belongings are sewned into the the building.

After depositing their belongings, they clean themselves, getting rid of their past, and becoming anew.

A NEW HOME

After the cleaning themselves, the new arrivals will be served pumpkin stew at the soup kitchen.

After the meal, they will pay their respects to the many other victims of disney’s mistreatment and abuse.

Throughout their journey, a new home is being sewned. Their belongings are sewned into a home made of unwanted clothing, bedsheets and various fabric scraps. At the end of their journey they retreat into their new fabric home and rest.

WELCOMING THE UNLOVED CHILDREN In Cinderella, a mice caught in a mousetrap was freed by the kind-hearted Cinderella.

She nicknamed him “Gus”, clothed him and introduced him to his new family.

“A BESPOKE DRESS FOR THE UNLOVED”

CHRISTIAN DIOR | 1947 NEW LOOK Christian Dior unveiled his first collection, nicknamed “The new look”.

As walt Disney is an avid follower of high fashion during his time, it is believed to have inspired Walt Disney’s 1950 Cinderella.

THE CHRISTIAN DIOR GOWN Christian Dior’s Gowns accentuated feminity and the curves of the female body. Narrowing down the waist while billowing out the skirt.

Christian Dior reintroduced the use of paddings most commonly used in 19th century womenwear. Gowns with padded hips and constructed with an inner corslet moulded the body into the gown. A high level of detailing then decorated and refined its appearance.

PATTERN MAKING

CONSTRUCTING THE CHRISTIAN DIOR GOWN The construction of the dior dress begins with a concept sketch of the dress which is then reproduced with Talatan Toile.

This reproduction of the dress is refined and later broken down into patterns which is transferred to the chosen fabrics for the final dress.

During the refinement stages, the dressmaker sents out chosen fabrics to be embroidered or pleated.

Embroidery and pleating happens concurently with the main construction of the patterns and the finished products are gathered and assembled into the final dress.

“FLOATING DOWN BAY LAKE” Fabric components are floated down bay lake and arrive on the same beaches that previous explorers have also landed.

“REPURPOSING EXISTING BUILDINGS” Existing buildings such as the employee service backyard and the Animal Hospital and Nursery are repurposed into a costume studio and soup kitchen respectively

A POCKET HOME FOR THE UNLOVED

“POCKET HOMES” New residents will be provided a new home that provides both security and comfort.

“SLEEVED CORRIDORS” Fabric corridors connect between existing structure, such as the forest trail, employee service yard and the animal nursery and hospital.

“ON-SITE PLANTATIONS” Pumpkins, onions, various herbs are grown on site around the soup kitchen.

“MAIN HOUSING BUILDING” The pocket homes surround a large ball of yarn and anchors on top of an existing forest trail.

“COSTUME BUILDING STUDIOS” Collected fabrics are processed, bleach, dyed and sewn together into large sheets on site.

“WASHING LAUNDRY BY THE RIVER” Existing rivers are repurposed to allow residents to wash their clothes.

Laundry lines above the river allow them to dry their clothes.

“A BESPOKE DRESS” Section sketches investigating various options of fabric construction, drawn directly from the construction of clothes and dresses.

Clothes that have inspired the design includes, corsets, the wedding gown, shirt sleeves and collars.

The building connectors are cinched using corset inspired construction while paddings and flounces are used to flare and open up other spaces.

One day leaflets magically fell from the sky, the bewildered children wondered why?

The children found that in this leaflet there exist a manual and in the manual, plans for a large home that would house many.

The plans pointed them towards a pile of old clothes to be used for their home, but it is guarded by a ferocious cat.

The children decided to send one of its best to distract the cat while the rest gathered as much materials as they can.

The children pulled the fabrics up a tall hill as atop of this hill was going to be their promise land.

The promised land now named “Treasure Island� by the children begins its transformation.

The children built and built and finally the home began to take shape.

The children moved into their new home safe from the claws of the cat.

NATURAL FABRIC DYES Natural dyes from hibiscus flowers, Onion skins, Carrots, beets etc are extracted and used to dye white fabrics, into a range of colours.

The most common method used for this extraction is to boil the ingredients which is later used to soak the fabrics in.

The richness in the colour dyeing depends on how long the fabric is soaked for.

“A DRESS FOR THE ABANDONED” Existing abandoned structures are refurbished and given a make over, a bespoke dress is crafted and draped over these buildings.

Existing bamboo sourced from the site contributes to the building. This project is spread out across the site with multiple bamboo structures. The largest and central structure consist of an internal supporting structure and an external structure holding the housing units.

The knitting studio consist of numerous balconies and spans the height of the building, the balconies enables the seamstress to hoist sewned fabrics from the laundrette up to other floors.

The laundrette & store is located underneath the main housing building and connects to the fabricating studio via a service duct.

The laundrette stores costumes and large pieces of dyed fabrics.

As much as the creatures DOWELS AND PALM in ROPEdisney LASHING and cartoons love being in the pocket of their human friend, the warmth and security they feel in the pocket is also what the homeless cast members of disneyland yearn for. The pocket CUT home therefore is designed for this innate comfort. its cacoon like form shields and shelters these people from the world.

NURTURING THE ADOPTED CHILDREN | SOUP KITCHEN As meal time approaches, the bell tower rings calling for the residents to gather to have their meals. Pumpkin stew made with pumpkins grown on the island and fresh herbs are served, along with fresh bread on the side.

WELCOMING THE UNLOVED | THE GRAND RECEPTION As new residents arrive at the foot of Treasure Island‘s grand entrance, its large curtain peels open receiving the new guest. Here the new residents (now the “adopted” children of the sanctuary) begin their journey.

COSTUME STUDIO | CHANGING ROOM As the new residents walk down the long hallway, they arrive before 10 changing rooms, each of which is filled with costumes.

Upon closer inspection the changing rooms were furnished not with a uniform set of furnitures but with an array of collected furnitures. Some clothed in knitting and fabric and a few wardrobe that have been incorporated into the fabric of the building.

Here the residents remove their old clothes and their past and put on a set of new clothes welcoming the new world.

SHRINE OF THE UNLOVED | SHIPWRECK SHRINE To honour the matyr and recognise the victims of Disney. A shrine is built ontop of an existing shrine. A portrait room is built on the mast of the shipwreck, crafting a space of solitude and isolation. In this room hangs the portraits of the unloved children and the matyr Mesfin. Here visitors journey down into the shipwreck where they offer various shells and decorations. After they climb up the mast and into the portrait room to pay their respects

“ A NEW DAWN ”

MAIN HOUSING BUILDING | GRAND CENTRAL ATRIUM Here in the central atrium of the main housing building, the residents awakes, the atrium’s grand curtains opens and sunlight fills the atrium. As the new residents arrive at the main housing building, the central knitting and sewing studio opens up, revealing a great ball of yarn that contained all kinds of fabrics, collected and spun into ropes.
