American River American River is a birdwatcher’s paradise and a great place to savour some of the fruits of the sea, including a dozen of the finest oysters, best enjoyed on the wharf overlooking Pelican Lagoon. With a selection of accommodation including the Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge and Wanderers Rest of Kangaroo Island, it’s a great spot to go sailing or a fishing charter, and the ocean is often dotted with boats bobbing on the water.
