POLYURETHANE FOAM
After polyurethane foam was discovered, engineers found its varied applications in the construction industry. In this sense, thermal and acoustic insulation for residential, commercial, and industrial facilities has known benefits. And the use of polyurethane foam as thermal and acoustic insulation started in the 1960s when its thermal properties came to the fore.
Foam insulators are very effective due to their material behavior, preventing heat loss with the consequent savings on energy bills. On the other hand, as it is a light material, experts recommend its use as thermal insulation on roofs and highlight its lightweight because it is easy to work.
INSTALLING RIGID FOAM INSULATION
We can find several ways to apply foam insulation. In this case, we refer to rigid foam board insulation, an extruded polystyrene insulator used for both aboveand below-grade insulation. This product can be ideal for the insulation of exterior basement walls since it has high moisture resistance and can withstand ground pressure.
BONDING
First, you need to lay the waterproofing material. You can then adhere the insulation with a bonding product on the underside, facing the surface.
TIPS
Insulate your basement walls only in dry weather. When installing the foam, use any bonding method such as solvent welding or adhesive (Don’t glue Polyethylene, bond it). Run continuous 4-foot by 8-foot sheets of rigid foam across the concrete basement wall behind studs. Before insulating, measure the entire wall and each bay individually to buy the right amount of rigid foam. When installing rigid foam insulation, place each sheet in its wall bay, and keep a firm installation without pushing excessively. For this reason, trim the edges with a saw if the sheet has exceeded the bay measure. Seal gaps between the foam and studs with low-expanding spray foam sealant.
