SEANC Scoop: SEANC fights to save prisons from permanent closure due to COVID

SEANC Executive Director Ardis Watkins questioned DPS Commissioner of Prisons Todd Ishee this week at a Senate Select Committee on Prison Safety meeting on the department’s plans for three prison units that have been temporarily closed because of COVID-19. Last week, DPS leadership announced that it was “temporarily suspending” operations at Randolph Correctional in Asheboro, and the minimum-security facilities at Southern Correctional in Troy and Piedmont Correctional in Salisbury. Staff from these facilities have been temporarily reassigned to other prisons in the region. Ishee reported that 318 DPS staff members are out of work, quarantined or fighting COVID-19. At least four have died since the pandemic began. While we are all adapting to many changes due to the pandemic, anytime a facility is closed it raises a red flag. In the last decade, the state has closed 16 prisons. Outside of standard legislative procedure, Sen. Bob Steinburg allowed Watkins to directly question Ishee regarding these closures and plans for reopening. Ishee indicated that reopening would depend on what the General Assembly funds in the state budget. It’s imperative that we keep a watchful eye on this process. If you work in one of these facilities, please contact us should you encounter any issues or hardships during this process.

Aflac is excited to offer to ALL SEANC members, including retirees, the new BenExtend product. BenExtend coverage is guaranteed-issue, which means you may qualify for coverage without having to answer health questions. We’d like to think science can stop contagious diseases in their tracks, but outbreaks such as the flu, SARS, COVID-19, along with issues related to trauma, have shown that’s not always the case. With hospitalization, critical illness, term life, and counseling benefits included, the Aflac BenExtend product is a well-rounded plan to help protect you and your loved ones from the unexpected. Enrollment for BenExtend will be available starting December 1, 2020, with call center and online self-enrollment options available.

Corrections staff will be among first offered vaccine With FDA approval for a vaccine for COVID-19 seemingly imminent, the state unveiled at least part of its plans for distribution this week. Most in the state will have to wait for the shot, but some state employees may receive it earlier depending on their jobs. All correctional staff, for example, will be offered the vaccine on a voluntary basis when at-risk inmates are vaccinated in the first allotment. N.C. Health News explored the issue of vaccine distribution in our prisons, which have been hit hard by the second wave of the virus. SEANC Executive Director Ardis Watkins pointed out the unique challenges correctional staff face with bringing the virus home to their families and spreading it in their communities. “Our folks who have worked in the prisons from the beginning, they’re used to danger,” said Watkins. “But one officer recently told me, ‘To die at the hands of https://myemail.constantcontact.com/SEANC-Scoop--Corrections-staff-will-be-among-first-offered-vaccine.html?soid=1134625057515&aid=IkWiuB6zoGo

SEANC Scoop: Series highlights dangers of pandemic at NC prisons

An in-depth investigation series from the nonprofit news source Carolina Public Press has uncovered the dire state of our prisons in the pandemic. The multi-part series found that more than 6,000 inmates and 1,500 employees are known to have been infected by COVID-19, of which more than 300 staff members are currently out of work – and four have died from the virus. SEANC Executive Director Ardis Watkins pointed out in the series that in several cases employees have been infected at work and have taken the virus home to infect family members. The article goes on to state that North Carolina ranks in the top 20 nationally for additional cases caused by prison outbreaks. SEANC continues to monitor the pandemic at our prisons and stands ready to help any member in need. Please contact us at SEANCCares@seanc.org with your concerns.

Update about pension checks We have received inquiries from a few retirees about the later-than-expected payment date for December pension checks. Upon discussion with the N.C. Retirement System office, we learned that the checks will be paid on Dec. 23 this year because of the state’s contract with First Citizens Bank. Active employees will receive their paychecks on Dec. 21.
