General Assembly convenes with a fresh look for the 2019 session The 2018-19 General Assembly convened Wednesday for an organizational session and to swear in new members. The new legislature has a decidedly different make-up than its predecessor. The most notable change is that the Republicans no longer have veto-proof supermajorities in the House or the Senate. After re-electing Rep. Tim Moore as Speaker of the House and Sen. Phil Berger as Senate President Pro Tempore, as well as leadership positions on both sides of the aisle, the legislature adjourned. They will return to session in earnest at noon on Jan. 30. This promises to be a busy session for state employee and retiree issues. SEANC expects pushback on State Treasurer Dale Folwell’s proposal to cut reimbursement rates to hospitals from the State Health Plan, a move that will save plan members and taxpayers millions of dollars. We also will roll out our suggestions for needed reforms to our prisons. And of course, issues such as the state budget, retirement security and worker rights will be at the forefront throughout the session as well. Be sure to like SEANC’s Facebook page and follow us on Twitter for breaking news throughout the session, and be ready to act when we ask for your help! If you haven’t already, text the word SEANC to 50457 to sign up for text alerts!

BREAKING NEWS: Walmart to remain "in-network" pharmacy Earlier this week, it was reported that Walmart would be leaving the CVS Caremark Pharmacy Network, which is the State Health Plan’s benefit manager. Because of this, Walmart would no longer be an “in-network” option for plan members. This morning, State Treasurer Dale Folwell's office announced that the crisis had been averted, and Walmart will continue to be an “in-network” pharmacy. We thank the Treasurer’s office for quickly working through this matter in plan members’ best interest.

Trooper, Raleigh officer continue to recover from shootings Two shootings in two weeks have pointed out the dangers our law enforcement officers and public servants face daily. Thankfully, the state has rallied to the officers’ families’ aid. State Trooper Daniel Harrell returned home from the hospital Wednesday after being shot in the face on a traffic stop. If you would like to donate to his family, the State Highway Patrol has set up an account in his name at the State Employees Credit Union. Visit any branch and mention account number 62389662. Raleigh Police Officer Charles Ainsworth also remains in serious condition following a shooting a week ago and faces a long road to recovery. Those who want to help Ainsworth and his family can do so at any State Employees Credit Union branch by making a donation to the "Charles Ainsworth Recovery Fund."
