District officer training was held in Greensboro this week as 165 district leaders came together to further strengthen the organization. The theme of the training was “SEANC: Where Do You Fit In?” and the event included sessions that empowered officers to recruit members and encourage more involvement from current members.

Tax Credits = More Jobs?

A recent WRAL-TV investigation discovered that business tax credits might not be creating the jobs they’re supposed to. The investigation revealed several instances where companies in the state qualified for tax credits but reduced their workforce. Jason Jolley, a business professor and senior researcher at UNC-Chapel Hill, said, “I would say the tax credit programs have failed.” SEANC couldn’t agree more.

State Pension Delivers Returns

In the midst of tough economic times, the state pension fund is a bright spot. In a News & Observer story, the state treasurer’s office reported that the fund delivered an 18 percent return for the fiscal year and its total assets rose to $74.9 billion.

State Employees Association of North Carolina The SEANC Scoop August 19, 2011 Retirees Talk Business The Retiree Council met at the SEANC Central Office on Thursday and adopted a resolution to support changing the State Health Plan to a calendar year. Members also received legislative updates regarding retiree health care from Executive Director Dana Cope as well as SEANC lobbyists and met Director of the North Carolina Retirement Systems Steve Toole.

Have You Mailed In Your Sweepstakes Tickets Yet? EMPAC is giving all SEANC members a chance to win up to $5,000 in a sweepstakes drawing to be held at the SEANC convention. Members should have received tickets in the mail. If you would like to enter, tickets must be returned with a postmark no later than Aug. 27 to be eligible. Absolutely no purchase, contribution or donation is necessary to enter. All that is necessary is mailing in the completed tickets in order to be eligible. Convention Memorial Service Deadline It’s not too late to honor the life and memory of a SEANC member at the convention. The SEANC remembrance presentation form and a photograph must be submitted to Daniel Pate at dpate@seanc.org by 5 p.m. today for inclusion in the convention memorial service.

Don Jones Memorial Golf Tournament Members, it’s time to brush up on those golf skills for a worthy cause - the SEANC Scholarship Foundation. The Don Jones Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 24-25 at the Hyland Golf Club in Southern Pines. The entry fee covers two days of golf, cart fees and dinner on that Saturday. This Year, It's All 'Bout Children! The convention community service project for this year is Operation All ‘Bout Children (Operation ABC). You can help SEANC salute our men and women in the armed forces by collecting baby items that will be distributed to junior-enlisted families at SEANC-hosted events.
